NEW MILTON TOWN 2010-11 Norton Sports Lost 3-2 When looking back over the seasons this game stood out like the proverbial sore thumb because I had never heard of Norton Sports! Background for them wasn’t easy to find other than that they were based in Sittingbourne in Kent and played in the then Kent League, in the Premier Division. It was a long journey for New Milton, then in the Wessex Premier, for a First Qualifying Round tie, and a defeat by the odd goal in five. Norton Sports changed their name to Woodstock Sports at the end of the season before folding in 2015. Perhaps it is ironic to report that their last Vase game as Norton was a defeat at Fisher and the result was repeated in 2015, in their new guise. NEWPORT 2015-16 Portishead Town Won 3-1 First Round Proper and a trip to the side of the Severn Estuary on 31 October for Newport and opposition from Division One of the Western League. A nice Town and a friendly Club but proof again of the difference standards of Ground Grading. The changing rooms were a considerable distance from the pitch with no form of walkway, the only seats were situated on a raised concretes square but were single and not affixed to the ground or each other and there was a game being played on a neighbouring pitch from which the sound of the referee’s whistle easily carried. The game itself was a little one sided with goals from Josh Maloney (2) and Liam Triggs securing a routine victory for the Island side who went on to reach the 4th Round that season. PETERSFIELD TOWN 2013-14 Welton Rovers Won 2-0 This was the season that Petersfield finished top of Division One and the First Qualifying Round of the Vase saw them head to Midsomer Norton, some ten miles south west of Bath, and Western League Division One opposition in the shape of Welton Rovers. The ground is not the easiest to find despite being virtually on the side of a main road and parking is a similar problem. A good result for Petersfield on the day which they followed with a no doubt enjoyable win over Fawley before bowing out to Hartley Wintney. RINGWOOD TOWN 2010-11 Fisher Lost 2-1 A journey to London’s docklands for a game between the Wessex Division One and the Kent League with victory going to the latter by the odd goal in three. This was the seventh season in which Ringwood had entered the Vase and their seventh defeat in the first game played. Whether playing at Fisher then was a daunting proposition on the day is unsure but back in their Southern League days their discipline on and off the pitch left an awful lot to be desired. ROMSEY TOWN 2017-18 AFC Aldermaston Won 3-2 A club with Wessex League history, Aldermaston were playing their first ever Vase game after returning to Step Six in the Hellenic League East. The goals came from a Pearce Farren with a pair and Liam Magee with a single; whilst Dan Alliston helped himself to both goals for the hosts. Romsey went on to beat Bournemouth in the next round before losing to Hamble Club.
