Adapun cita-cita menulis buku ini, telah lama kami canangkan, sekitar tahun 2005 yang lalu. Namun karena sulitnya mengumpulkan materi-materi yang akan diajangkau, yakni begitu ekstensif dan luasnya bahan yang mesti dicapai, juga materi yang dikaji di bidang kesenian meliputi seni-seni: musik, tari, teater baik yang tradisional. Sementara latar belakang keilmuan kami pun, baik di strata satu dan dua, umumnya adalah terkonsentasi di bidang etnomusikologi dan kajian seni pertunjukan yang juga dengan minat utama musik etnik. Hanya seorang saja yang berlatar belakang akademik antropologi tari. Selain itu, tim kami ini ada dua orang yang berlatar belakang pendidikan strata dua antropologi dan sosiologi. Oleh karenanya latar belakang keilmuan ini, sangat mewarnai apa yang kami tulis dalam buku ini. Adapun materi dalam buku ini memuat tentang konsep apa itu masyarakat, kesenian, dan Indonesia—serta terminologi-terminologi yang berkaitan dengannya seperti: kebudayaan, pranata sosial, dan kelompok sosial. -

The cast, comprising 85% local talents from the Community Centres/Clubs (CCs), includes a total of 150 artistes, both Malay and non-Malay performers coming together to promote understanding and appreciation of the Malay culture. This is one of the biggest cast participation in Gentarasa since 2002. William See is one of the 5 non-Malay performers who is very excited in performing dance on stage and will continue to support such programmes in the future. The youngest cast, Md Hasif Afiq Bin Md Ridwan, aged 6, will be involved in the martial arts performance. Md Hasif Afiq is from the Bukit Batok East CC Silat Interest Group and is his first Gentarasa performance. 2 The 100-minute flagship cultural concert by People’s Association (PA) Malay Activity Executive Committees Council (MESRA), entitled “Genggaman Jati, Menyulam Masa – Weaving Self through Time” – will perform to an anticipated 2,500 audience at the Kallang Theatre on Saturday, 30 July 2016 at 2.00pm (Matinee) and at 8.00pm (Gala Show). -

HUMANIORA VOLUME 29 Number 3 October 2017 Page 245–255 Postcolonial Aesthetics: Talempong Kreasi and Talempong Goyang in West Sumatra Andar Indra Sastra, Nadya Fulzi, Syahri Anton E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to disclose the postcolonial aesthetics of talempong kreasi and talempong goyang in West Sumatra. Aesthetics can be defined as a sense of perception or the various kinds of feelings that are aroused by an art object that is being observed. Postcolonialism is understood to be the continuation of colonialism; hence postcolonial aesthetics discusses the sense of perception, in this case with reference to talempong kreasi and talempong goyang as the material object. Talempong is a type of bronze musical instrument found in West Sumatra; the word kreasi means ‘creation’ or something new, while the word goyang means ‘rocking’ or ‘swaying’ and refers to the body movements of the spectators as they appear to dance in time to the talempong music. The addition of the words kreasi and goyang after the word talempong create the impression that this type of music belongs to the domain of popular music. The emergence of these two concepts in West Sumatra cannot be separated from the influence and power of a number of leading figures in the field of education – specifically artists – from the colonial era, who had a background in Western music education. Talempong kreasi and talempong goyang are dynamic in nature and have the ability to play both major and minor melodies as the talempong instruments are tuned to chromatic pitches. The tuning system of the talempong is akin to that of diatonic musical instruments, and as a musical system it presents the harmonies of Western music through its melodies and chords. -

SEJARAH LEMBAGA-LEMBAGA PENDIDIKAN ISLAM NUSANTARA ( Surau, Meunasah, Pesantren dan Madrasah ) Oleh : Abdul Mukhlis Dosen Tetap STAI Pancawahana Bangil Kabupaten Pasuruan ABSTRAK Lembaga-lembaga pendidikan islam ada seiring dengan penyebaran Islam itu sendiri, lembaga semisal Pondok Pesantren di Jawa, Surau di Sumatera ( Minangkabau ), Meunasah di Aceh dan Madrasah Islam modern yang menyebar di seluruh nusantara merupakan suatu fenomena- fenomena yang meniscayakan adanya dinamika lembaga-lembaga pendidikan Islam yang pada suatu kurun waktu tertentu menjadi suatu lembaga pendidikan yang menjadi menjadi primadona di masanya, akankah lembaga-lembaga Islam semisal Pondok Pesantren dan Madrasah menjadi lembaga pendidikan Islam yang tetap bereksistensi ataukah ada model lembaga pendidikan lain yang lebih mengakomodasi peradaban dan kebudayaan dunia Islam. Historically, the Minangkabau migrants have coexisted peacefully with local communities in which they settle, and there is no record of conflict between the Minangkabau migrants and local inhabitants. This study attempted to determine the values espoused by this nomadic community. The study was grounded in literature study approach of philosophical hermeneutics and utilized methodical elements, such as description, induction deduction, synthesis analysis, and heuristics. The study also applied observation, and interviews with the Minangkabau migrants. The findings revealed that the culture of this ethnic group explicitly encourages young people to venture abroad. The ethical values that form the basis of the outmigration’s of the Minangkabau community are affirmed by the adat (local) proverbs that prescribe strong work ethics, mutual respect, and an understanding of the local culture to which they outmigrate. Surau Nagari Lubuk Bauk dan Surau Gadang Bintungan Sumatera Barat : Tinjauan Gaya Bangunan dan Makna Ornamen Ivo Giovanni, Isman Pratama Nasution Departemen Arkeologi, Fakultas Ilmu Pengetahuan Budaya, Universitas Indonesia E-mail: [email protected] Abstrak Artikel ini membahas bangunan surau di Sumatera Barat yaitu Surau Nagari Lubuk Bauk dan Surau Gadang Bintungan. Tujuannya adalah untuk melihat pengaruh adat pada bangunan surau berdasarkan tinjauan arsitektur dan makna ornamennya. Selain itu, dilakukan perbandingan antara surau dengan bangunan tradisional Minangkabau lainnya, yaitu rumah gadang dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif analitis. Hal ini dilakukan agar unsur-unsur adat yang terlihat pada surau dapat diuraikan dengan jelas, sehingga dapat diketahui makna dari setiap unsur adat tersebut dan peran surau bagi masyarakat Minangkabau pada saat surau tersebut dibangun. Berdasarkan kajian ini dapat diketahui bahwa Surau Nagari Lubuk Bauk dan Surau Gadang Bintungan memiliki bangunan yang berbeda. Surau Nagari Lubuk Bauk memiliki bentuk yang bertingkat, karena hal ini dipengaruhi oleh aliran adat Koto Piliang yang menganut paham aristokrasi, sedangkan Surau Gadang Bintungan tidak bertingkat karena dipengaruhi oleh aliran adat Bodi Caniago, yang menganut paham demokrasi. Selain itu ragam hias ornamen yang terdapat pada surau ini juga memiliki makna yang mengandung pesan moral yang dapat dijadikan sebagai pedoman hidup bagi masyarakat Minangkabau. Abstract This article discusses about surau (little Mosque) in West Sumatra, namely Surau Nagari Lubuk Bauk and Surau Gadang Bintungan. The aim of this article is to see the tradition influences in the buildings, based on their architectures and the meaning of ornaments.
