Sl ud ia Islamikn. Vol. 1 5. • The Revival of Tradition in Indonesian Politics
The Revival of Tradition in Indonesian Politics The Indonesian term adat means ‘custom’ or ‘tradition’, and carries connotations of sedate order and harmony. Yet in recent years it has suddenly become associated with activism, protest and violence. Since the resignation of President Suharto in 1998, diverse indigenous communities and ethnic groups across Indonesia have publicly, vocally, and sometimes violently, demanded the right to implement elements of adat in their home territories. This book investigates the revival of adat in Indonesian politics, identifying its origins, the historical factors that have conditioned it and the reasons for its recent blossoming. The book considers whether the adat revival is a constructive contribution to Indonesia’s new political pluralism or a divisive, dangerous and reactionary force, and examines the implications for the development of democracy, human rights, civility and political stability. It is argued that the current interest in adat is not simply a national offshoot of international discourses on indigenous rights, but also reflects a specifically Indonesian ideological tradition in which land, community and custom provide the normative reference points for political struggles. Whilst campaigns in the name of adat may succeed in redressing injustices with regard to land tenure and helping to preserve local order in troubled times, attempts to create enduring forms of political order based on adat are fraught with dangers. These dangers include the exacerbation of ethnic conflict, the legitimation of social inequality, the denial of individual rights and the diversion of attention away from issues of citizenship, democracy and the rule of law at national level. Overall, this book is a full appraisal of the growing significance of adat in Indonesian politics, and is an important resource for anyone seeking to understand the contemporary Indonesian political landscape.

On one hand, they were prospering economically, but were nonetheless held in contempt by the Dutch, encountered legal discrimination and faced challenges if they wanted to educate their children in European schools. Their marginal position motivated them do their utmost to become “civilized subjects”, on a par with Europeans, but they were also inspired to reinvent their Chinese identity. This contribution will highlight role played by “enlightened” Chinese, the kaoem moeda bangsa Tjina. Central to this movement were the Chinese girls known to the public as bangsawan prampoewan (the noblewomen), who wrote letters the newspaper and creating a gendered public sphere. They also performed western classical music in public. Considering the inspirational impact of bangsawan prampoewan’s enlightening achievements on non-Chinese women, it is appropriate to include them into the narrative of the history of the nation’s women’s movements. Becoming Aristocrats: Keraton in the Politics of Adat Fadjar I. Thufail Introduction An incident in West Jakarta District involving a group of thugs unravels the fraught relationship between the royal families of Javanese keratons and the public,1 exposing contentious issues over cultural property, political connection and symbolic status. The incident discloses an overlooked connection between the aristocracy and economy and sheds light on the challenges the aristocrats confront to rethink how noble culture and adat encounter the encroachment of capital and the state into the palace realm. In other words, the incident with the thugs depicts the predicament that the keraton and its noblemen must negotiate in order to sustain and assert the cultural sovereignty of the palace despite the continuous pressures from the state and capital to curtail the political role of the keraton.

• Minangkabau Peace Literature in West Sumatra: a Critical Discourse
Minangkabau peace literature in West Sumatra: A critical discourse analysis Literatur perdamaian Minangkabau di Sumatra Barat: Analisis wacana kritis Wening Udasmoro Department of Language and Literature, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada Address: Jalan Nusantara No.1, Bulaksumur, Yogyakarta 55281 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This research paper, focusing on the oral literature regarding peace in Minangkabau, West Sumatra, does not simply examine the meaning of oral literature, but also attempts to connect such literature with the social practices of its consumers. This has been carried out in an attempt to understand how, if peace literature is still a part of Minangkabau society, conflict and other acts of violence in the society can still occur. Three important questions must be answered: 1) How are works of oral literature regarding peace produced, consumed, and reproduced among the Minangkabau in Padang, West Sumatra? 2) Who is most involved in reproducing peace literature? 3) How is oral literature regarding peace related to social practices of peace? Critical discourse analysis can be a useful method for literary research. This can be attributed to the fact that works of literature are not simply fictional, but also social, meaning that they play an important role in bridging fact and fiction. The intent of this paper is to examine the connection between oral literature regarding peace and its discursive context through a strict investigation of the three layers of critical discourse analysis: linguistic practice, discursive practice, and social practice. The findings of this paper are that every generation creates their own definition of peace literature.

One of the biggest sugar factory in Java was the sugar factory owned by Mangkunegaran Kingdom (Praja Mangkunegaran). The sugar factory represented a capitalist industrial culture that prioritized rationality. On the other hand, the process of supplying raw materials for sugar factories in vorstenlanden area (Praja Kejawen) was highly dependent on Javanese farmers who were strong with their agrarian culture. This paper aimed to figure out the interaction between the two cultures, which together carried out the sustainability of the sugar industry in Java. The interaction of these two cultures was seen from the components of the actors, activities, and places of the Tasikmadu Sugar Factory owned by Praja Mangkunegaran as a case study with a historical approach. The finding of the study indicated that there was acculturation between capitalist industrial culture and Javanese agrarian culture, which could be seen in the aspects of the actors, activities, and architectural layout of the Tasikmadu sugar factory.
