CommonFloor Report Top rental destinations in Chennai 1 Introduction: Chennai has become an attractive destination for real estate investment with demand for residential units increasing on a daily basis. Employment opportunities and better standard of living are the key reasons for mass migration of people from different parts of Tamil Nadu and other states. The past decade has seen over 2 lakh people migrating to Tamil Nadu from Karnataka and Kerala alone, most of them settling in Chennai (Urban India, 2011: Evidence). OVERVIEW • Chennai, (formerly Madras) located on the northeastern tip of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. • India's fourth largest city and the capital of Tamil Nadu. It is often referred to as the `Gateway to the South'. • The city is located on the Coromandel Coast, with the Bay of Bengal along its shoreline, was formerly a cluster of villages which grew around the British settlement of Fort Saint George. HISTORY • Madras, acquired its name from Madraspattinam which is a fishing village situated to the north of Fort St. George • During 16th and 18th century, Madras was ruled by Portuguese and Frenchmen. • Madras was the only Indian city which was attacked during the World War I. • After India gained independence in 1947, Chennai became the capital of Madras State. In 1969 Madras state was renamed as state of Tamil Nadu. • In 1995 when Bombay was renamed to Mumbai, the ruling political party renamed Madras to Chennai. GEOGRAPHY Location • The geographical coordinates of Chennai is 13°04’N latitude and 80°17’E longitude. It is located at an altitude of 8 meters approximately from the sea level. Climate • Chennai city has a tropical climate and is hot and humid throughout the year. 6.4 Railways 6.4.1 Sector Overview The CBIC Area has a dense railway network comprising 2,806 route km, all of which is broad gauge (1,676 mm) – please see a network illustration in Figure 6.4.1. The network is maintained and operated by three zonal railway organizations under the Ministry of Railways (MOR). The largest component of the network is that of the South Western Railway (1,285 route km), operated from a base in Hubli, Karnataka. The Southern Railway, based in Chennai, operates 950 route km and the South Central Railway, with a headquarters in Secunderabad, operates 566 route km within the CBIC boundary. Passengers dominate the traffic on this network, particularly on the Southern Railway portion which generates most of its revenue from passenger traffic. The network consists of a central east-west route of 675 km linking Chennai with Chitradurga, via Bengaluru, plus another 21 routes generally running north and south from Chennai or Bengaluru. The network has the following functions: It connects inland industrial centres with east coast ports in Chennai, Ennore, Krishnapatnam, and, in the future, with new ports in Kattupalli and (possibly) Duggirajapatnam It connects the CBIC area to the major cities of India It connects the inland industrial centres of CBIC with other manufacturing centres located outside the CBIC Area. In particular, the CBIC railway network provides some important trunk line connections between: Chennai and Gudur Junction (a “Golden Quadrilateral” connecting Chennai with Delhi and Kolkata); Chennai, Renigunta and Nandalur (also a “Golden Quadrilateral” connecting Chennai with Hyderabad and Mumbai); Chennai-Salem, Chennai-Villupuram and Bengaluru-Mysore (links with major cities and with agricultural areas in the south); Bengaluru and Dharmavaram (links to Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi, as well as the steel producing region around Bellary); and Bengaluru and Chitradurga/Rayadurga (links to Mangalore Port to the southwest and Bellary to the north).

India’s 11 Super Expressways India, a developing country has world’s third largest road network but when we talk about expressways, we can hardly name a few like Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. So we decided to tell you about some of the other expressways in India. Here is the list of India’s top 11 Super Expressways 1) Ahmedabad Vadodara Expressway Ahmedabad Vadodara Expressway is 95 km long and joins Ahmedabad and Baroda in Gujarat. It is also referred as National Expressway 1. This expressway was opened to public in 2004 and was constructed under the Golden Quadrilateral Project by NHAI. 2) Mumbai-Pune Expressway Mumbai-Pune Expressway (official name is the Yashwantrao Chavan Expressway) is 93 km long and is considered as one of the best expressways in India. It is India’s first six lane high speed expressway and was made by Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) at a staggering cost of Rs 1,630 crore (US$363.49 million). It was opened to public in April 2002 3) Jaipur-Kishangarh Expressway Jaipur-Kishangarh Expressway is 90km long and it connects Jaipur with Kishangarh. It was constructed under the Golden Quadrilateral National Highways Development Project and its cost was USD 154 million. More than 20,000 vehicles pass from this highway everyday. 4) Allahabad Bypass Allahabad Bypass covers a distance of 86 km and is one of the most remarkable achievements of the Golden Quadrilateral project. It connects India’s four main metropolians New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai. 5) Ambala Chandigarh Expressway Ambala Chandigarh Expressway covers a distance of 35 km and has reduced the traffic congestion to a much greater extent.

HIGHWAYS DEPARTMENT DEMAND NO:20 POLICY NOTE ON ROADS, BRIDGES AND SHIPPING 2005-2006 I. INTRODUCTION Development of infrastructure leads to economic growth of a region and improved living conditions of the people. The development of road infrastructure in particular will accelerate the growth in industry, power, road transport and also in social development. Development of a good road network also acts as a catalyst for economic development of the rural areas of the State. The road network of the State influences considerably the economic development, population distribution, the size and shape of cities and towns, energy consumption, access to social infrastructure and above all the quality of life. The government under the dynamic leadership of the Hon’ble Chief Minister does not consider the roads as mere connecting links but as an essential requirement for the over all development of the State. Tamil Nadu has a more extensive road network than most Indian States. The total length of roads in the State is 1,78,062 Km, of which 61,289 Km is managed by the Highways Department. The 61,289 Km of road network comprises 3850 Km of National Highways, 7230 Km of State Highways, 7383 Km of Major District Roads, 41,191 Km of Other District Roads and 1635 Km of Sugar-cane roads. In terms of road density per 100 square Km, the State’s position is commendable that it increased from 29.70 Km in 1951 to the present level of 127.68 Km, which is about 70% more than the national average of 74.73 km per 100 sq.km.
