February 18, 2018 remembrance ni Ulster sailors killed at Anzio in Belfast- built Penelope ! On February 18, 1944 three Able Seamen and a Petty Officer from Northern Ireland died in HMS Penelope which was torpedoed near Anzio. They were Thomas Gould from Belfast, Kenneth Hewitt from Londondery, William Hunter from Ballyclare and Samuel Taylor from Dundrod. 418 members of the ship’s company of 650, including the captain DG Belben. A Lance Bombardier from Londonderry in the Royal Artillery was killed at Anzio the previous day. Page !1 February 18, 2018 The Belfast-built ship had been attacked so often she was nicknames HMS Pepperpot. One of the survivors, Jack Clark, a Royal marine musician, was a gunnery operator in the transmitting station on Penelope. He recalled his experience to the BBC. “Having taken part in actions in the North Africa campaign, Sicily, Italy and Aegean we were engaged in the bombardment of enemy positions relating to the beachhead at Anzio. Having bombarded for approximately two weeks we were becoming short of fuel and ammunition. On the 17th February 1944 we left during the late evening and returned to Naples to replenish supplies of the aforementioned. Captain Belben had completed our tour of duty and was expected to give us a well-earned 24-hour rest period, the custom when conditions permitted. “As we anchored in the bay of Naples at 22:00 captain Belben received a signal ordering him to prepare for sea immediately and return to Anzio to take the place of HMS Dido, which had been in collision with a landing craft in Naples bay. -

Ayers refers to, in his piece “Mapping Time,” as “deep contingency”: “layers of events, layers of the consequences of unpredictability.” Precisely as the lava flows accumulate on the flanks of Vesuvius, we will attempt to depict how centuries accumulate. July 7, Monday, 1851: ...Even the facts of science may dust the mind by their dryness –unless they are in a sense effaced each morning or rather rendered fertile by the dews of fresh & living truth. Every thought that passes through the mind helps to wear & tear it & to deepen the ruts which as in the streets of Pompeii evince how much it has been used. How many things there are concerning which we might well deliberate whether we had better know them. Routine –conventionality manners &c &c –how insensibly and undue attention to these dissipates & impoverishes the mind –robs it of its simplicity & strength emasculates it. Knowledge doe[s] not cone [come] to us by details but by lieferungs from the gods. What else is it to wash & purify ourselves? Conventionalities are as bad as impurities. Although the Agency continued to strive to achieve satisfactory results in the number of visitors and generation of revenue it closed its books with a deficit. Besides organising several popular exhibitions and participated in important exhibitions abroad it continued to invest more in the sites under its management. During the year under review it also increased the number of staff employed not only to improve its operations but also to increase the resources needed for the vast number of cultural activities, projects and work carried out throughout the year. The Agency finances its operations through revenues, mainly from admission fees to museums and sites, and also from a Government subvention. The net revenue generated from admission fees by the Agency in 2019 reached €8,657,464 (2018: €8,957,154). A government subvention of €5,199,998 (2018: €5,049,996) was received during the year to meet the Agency's administrative expenditure for the financial year ended 31 December 2019. Furthermore, an amount of €253,836 (2018: €213,869) is paid to Government as rent on various sites and premises occupied by Heritage Malta. -

Scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2023, the 248-person ferries have been designed by Norway-based firm HAV Design and will be able to accommodate 80 cars and six trailers. Both 84-metre-long vessels will have a battery-powered propulsion system, which can be charged via shore power while passengers are disembarking in port. They will also have a diesel-electric backup system to allow them to operate in either fully electric, hybrid or diesel-electric mode. Once in service, the vessels will operate on the routes between Stranda and Liabygda, and Eidsdal and Linge. The vessel, which is nearing completion at the Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) shipyard in Finland, underwent three days of tests to assess operational performance.
