    Stuka-Attack on HMS Carlisle and HMS Panther on 9 October 1943 A summary by LtCol Hans Peter Eisenbach, Author of the book “Fronteinsätze eines Stuka-Fliegers” This summary is based on the original flight data of a German Stuka pilot who participated as a member of I. Group Stuka Wing 3 (I.StG3) in the whole Aegean campaign in October/November 1943. The Pilot’s Flying Log Book of this aviator with all his Stuka missions in the Mediterranean theatre of operations and the East Front between September 1943 and March 1944 was first published in 2009 1. During the war in the Aegean this Stuka pilot flew 22 Stuka-sorties within I.StG3. The flight time of the missions was between 175 – 195 minutes and most of the targets were on the island of LEROS. Only when I.StG3 attacked HMS Penelope and HMS Panther the flight time was extremely long, 245 / 230 minutes, as the Stukas had to fly a distance of 440 kilometres from their air base on the Greek mainland to the Straits of Scarpanto (Karpathos) south of Rhodos, where they expected to hit the British warships. In 2010 the author of this summary started to reconstruct the Stuka attacks on 9 October 1943, as there were too many caveats and discrepancies in the available literature. The basic cause for this is the non-availability of official German documents of the Luftwaffe , which have been destroyed by end of WW II and the tight attack plan of I. and II. Group Stuka Wing 3, which attacked the warships with a separation of 5 minutes.

As such it became the main schoolhouse of navigation, of naval strategy, and naval tactics . On its surface, in the sea battles of the Persian, the Peloponnesian, and the Punic wars, the out - come of those wars was decided, and the fates of nations determined . With the expansion of the known world through exploration, the Mediterranean' s importance was enhanced as a main route to the East and as a highway for the trade on which were built the mercantile republics of Genoa and Venice. Over its surface sailed the fleets of the Crusaders ; it "has witnessed the clash of Christianity and Islam ; and its waters have been dyed with the blood of Goth and Vandal, Arab and Norman". Not until the ocean routes to the Far East and the Americas were opened in the fifteent h century was its monopoly destroyed . The largest of the world 's inland seas, it is some two thousand nautical miles long, by six hundred wide at its greatest width between the heel o f Italy and the southern shore of the Gulf of Sidra on the African coast. Its only oceanic opening is that at the western end to the Atlantic by th e Straits of Gibraltar, 8 miles in width .

It was aimed to enclose and destroy the Heeresgruppen A, B and Don. A kind of Superstalingrad. The Soviets were advancing and Manstein already had a plan to make a counterstrike. However, therefore he had to retreat in some parts. Especially Charkow. Here Hitler vetoed that. He wanted to keep Charkow. Manstein needed the forces there and on February 16th indeed the SS units defending Charkow retreated. Hitler was furious. Instead of flying to Poltawa, where he was going to meet Col. Hyazinth Graf Strachwitz von Groß-Zauche und Camminetz, he flew to Manstein to Saporoschje. What Hitler didn't know: Strachwitz, although member in the SS, was there to arrest and likely kill Hitler as part of Operation Walküre. As Plan B a bomb in a bottle of Cognac was smuggled into the Fw 200 of Hitler. Because the British detonator did not cope with the low temperatures the bomb did not explode... And here is the PoD: 17.02.1943: Hiter wants to fly to Saporoschje, but only after he visited Strachwitz. He wanted to let Manstein wait for him and to show him, who is the Gröfaz (Größter Feldherr aller Zeiten, biggest general of all times). "Mein Führer, Sie sind verhaftet!" The flight was long from Berlin to Poltawa. Hitler was glad to have landed. He was not glad about the war situation however. The Soviets were advancing. And Manstein wanted to retreat. Retreat! That was nearly treachery.

In doing so, it focuses upon the foremost organisation involved in maintaining and supporting the peripheral regions of imperial influence, the Royal Navy’s China Station. The thesis provides an important new segment to help in explaining the wider story of the slow decline of British imperial and naval dominance in the 1920s. Foremost among the findings is an emphasis on how heavily inter-related Britain’s strategies for China and Japan were during the decade. Indeed, China was expected by the Admiralty to play a pivotal role in any future relationship between the British Empire and the increasingly expansionist Japan, which adds a significant new angle to existing discussion of Britain’s far eastern defence strategy.
