Any bid between the listed figures would, in our opinion, offer a fair chance of success. However, realised prices may be above or below estimates, which do not include Buyers Premium. All lots have reserves, at or below the low estimate. Reserves on the majority of lots are 85% of low estimate, but some reserves may be higher or lower than this figure. No bids will be accepted below the reserve price. Buyers Premium Purchasers Resident within Great Britain and the European Union Buyers premium on all lots is 22.8%. Further details are given in the notes on VAT below. Purchasers Resident outside the European Union Buyers premium on all lots is 19% provided all lots are posted to the purchaser by Argyll Etkin Limited. Value Added Tax Purchasers Resident within Great Britain and the European Union Lots marked † after the lot number are imported from outside the EU under the auctioneers temporary import scheme. As such VAT at the reduced rate of 5% will be added to the hammer price. On all other lots there is no VAT on the hammer price. VAT at 20% will be added to the 19% buyers premium on all lots, including those sold under the auctioneers temporary import scheme. Although buyers premium includes an element of VAT it will be shown as a single inclusive amount and the VAT within this amount may NOT be reclaimed by the buyer even if the buyer is registered for VAT. 20% VAT will be added to the 2% charge for paying by corporate credit card. 20% VAT will also be added to postage and packing charges. Purchasers Resident outside the European Union There will be NO VAT CHARGES (on the hammer price, 19% buyers premium, credit card charges or postage and packing charges) provided Argyll Etkin post the lots to the purchaser. Therefore the only additions to the hammer price paid by purchasers outside the EU are the 19% buyers premium, postage and packing charges, and the 2% charge if paying by credit card. Bogash (www.rbogash.com/B314.html) In the world of man-made objects, be they antique cars, historic locomotives, steamships, religious symbols, or, in this case - beautiful airplanes, certain creations stand out. Whether due to perceived beauty, historical importance, or imagined romance, these products of man’s mind and hands have achieved a status above and beyond their peers. For me, the Lockheed Super Constellation is one such object. So is the Boeing 314 Flying Boat the Clipper, (when flown by Pan American Airways) - an Icon in the purest sense of the word. The B-314 was the largest, most luxurious, longest ranged commercial flying boat - built for, and operated by Pan Am. It literally spanned the world, crossing oceans and continents in a style still impressive today. From the late 1930’s through the Second World War, these sky giants set standard unequalled to this day. Arriving from San Francisco at her namesake city, the Honolulu Clipper disembarks her happy travelers at the Pearl City terminal. The 2400 mile trip generally took between 16 and 20 hours depending upon winds.

  • Our Postal Past. Martin Petrie
HISTORIC ARGYLL 2012 Our Postal Past. by Martin Petrie, Kilninver. Some may have noticed that the red phone box at Kilninver has recently been repainted. Although the phone inside has gone, the landowner has ensured that the box itself remains in situ. Presently, I’ve been trying to gather some information for display inside the box. For those who don’t know, these iconic red boxes of Britain’s landscape were originally designed by Giles Gilbert Scotti and this K6 design was introduced to commemorate George V’s silver jubilee year 1935. Thousands like Kilninver’s were made at the Lion Foundry, Kirkintilloch. Although I’m unaware when the box arrived at Kilninver it came as a surprise to see it listed as a category B building dated 1989. These kiosks are often at the site of another iconic part of British life and society, the local Post office. Kilninver Telephone box and former post office. 49 HISTORIC ARGYLL 2012 The origins of the Royal Mail ultimately date back to Henry VIII and his appointment of the Master of the Posts in 1516. By 1635 Charles I opened up the post to the public whereby the recipient paid the postage. Later in 1657 during Cromwell’s Protectorate an act was passed to set the postage rates in England, Scotland and Ireland. In 1660 with the restoration of the monarchy, Charles II established the General Post Office and many of Cromwell’s acts were dropped. In 1680 a Penny Post appeared in London but became so successful the government took it over.

GEORGE DE LONG USS HELENA GUADALCANAL (Transcriber note: The following is a speech Mr. DeLong gave to the Jaycees in Great Falls, VA in August 1993. The tape recorder was some distance from the speaker and he was not wearing a microphone. There are places in the speech where due to background noise or other interference, and the speaker turning away from the tape recorder the transcriber was unable to get parts of the story. ) Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jaycees. The last time I was here I told you my story about Pearl Harbor and how I was trapped aboard the USS Oklahoma. I recognize quite a few faces here tonight. On the other hand, there are some new faces here, too. If you don’t mind, I am just going to run-down a thumb nail sketch of what I told them the last time. My story basically was that I went into the Navy in January, 1941. On December 7, 1941, I was in Pearl Harbor on the battleship Oklahoma when the Japanese attacked. As they attacked the ship with torpedoes, the Oklahoma took a list to port almost immediately. I was down in the steering station, way down about the fourth deck of the ship, way under the water. As the torpedoes hit the ship, we didn’t know what was going on. I had just gotten out of my bunk that morning. The next thing you know, the ship turned over and there we were fighting for our lives, trapped in a compartment below decks.

  • Great Britons Date of Issue: 10 JULY 1974
SPECIAL STAMP HISTORY Great Britons Date of issue: 10 JULY 1974 The first suggestion for what finally became the ‘Great Britons’ issue was probably on 26 August 1971, when A H Woodland, Director of the South West Postal Region, proposed in a letter to Postal Marketing ‘a non-anniversary orientated series of British heroes’ within the 1973 stamp programme, albeit his idea was not taken up. When the 1974 programme was considered in May 1972, the idea was revived at an early stage, prompted by proposals, principally from the Scottish National Party but also from private individuals and newspaper articles, that the Post Office mark the 700th anniversary of the birth of Robert the Bruce. Attention had also been drawn to the Bruce anniversary in a list of dates for possible commemoration commissioned from the Historical Research Unit, that had come to hand in March. The Bruce anniversary was included among the subjects considered for the 1974 programme by the Stamp Advisory Committee (SAC) on 15 June. The SAC did not commit itself at this stage; it was decided to circularise postal regions with a shortlist of possible subjects and soliciting further comment and suggestions. The 700th anniversary was included in the final version of the shortlist agreed by the SAC on 7 September; the letter was sent on 12 September signed by E G White, chairman of the SAC and Director of Postal Marketing (DPM). It included the following proposal: 1 British National Leaders. This series would be centred round the 700th anniversary of Robert the Bruce of Scotland and could include Owen Glendower of Wales and Hereward the Wake of England.
