Introductions to Heritage Assets: Ships and Boats: 1840 to 1950
Ships and Boats: 1840-1950 Introductions to Heritage Assets Summary Historic England’s Introductions to Heritage Assets (IHAs) are accessible, authoritative, illustrated summaries of what we know about specific types of archaeological site, building, landscape or marine asset. Typically they deal with subjects which lack such a summary. This can either be where the literature is dauntingly voluminous, or alternatively where little has been written. Most often it is the latter, and many IHAs bring understanding of site or building types which are neglected or little understood. Many of these are what might be thought of as ‘new heritage’, that is they date from after the Second World War. This overview looks at ships and boats built after 1840. Principally drawing on archaeological, technological and historical sources, it describes vessels used on English inland and coastal waters and in the open sea. The evidence of wrecks and abandoned vessels is drawn on, as well as extant vessels. Also included is the early development of submarines. This guidance note has been written by Mark Dunkley and edited by Paul Stamper. It is one is of several guidance documents that can be accessed at HistoricEngland.org.uk/listing/selection-criteria/listing-selection/ihas-buildings/ First published by English Heritage September 2012. May 2012 Friday, May 4Th, Commodore's Dinner 7:00
May 2012 Volume 42 Number 5 The Commodore’s Corner By Jimmy Yurko May is a great month! One year ago this Friday my daughter was born. We’re so excited about it that we’ve decided to make it our theme and date for this month’s Commodore’s pot luck dinner. When I think about the fact that for Kristi, Annabelle and I, our nearest relative lives 300 miles away…it is moments like this that remind me just how important this club is to our lives. We would like to have all of you come help us sing Annabelle her first birthday song! So on Friday May 4th we’ll be bringing the cake and some pulled pork …we hope to see you there. There will be appetizers starting around 5:30, and we will light the candles at 7:00. This month’s calendar is chocked full of fun events. Thursday Night Races start this week! We also are starting our Happy Hour raft/ cruises and Saturday is the Burlesque by the Bay show. With our race schedule in full swing, SMSA really is the place to be. On the racing front I think the most interesting event is the Frost- Goode race May 12 which will be open to any SMSA racer, Keelboat or Dinghy….a real “Run what ‘ya brung” kind of event. With a pot luck rendezvous at the club afterwards….this seems like a perfect formula for a great afternoon! On a business note, we are very pleased to announce that we are on track to see an increase in the number of SMSA member families.
