28 Oryx Conservation Problems on Tristan da Cunha ByJ. H. Flint The author spent two years, 1963-65, as schoolmaster on Tristan da Cunha, during which he spent four weeks on Nightingale Island. On the main island he found that bird stocks were being depleted and the islanders taking too many eggs and young; on Nightingale, however, where there are over two million pairs of great shearwaters, the harvest of these birds could be greater. Inaccessible Island, which like Nightingale, is without cats, dogs or rats, should be declared a wildlife sanctuary. Tl^HEN the first permanent settlers came to Tristan da Cunha in " the early years of the nineteenth century they found an island rich in bird and sea mammal life. "The mountains are covered with Albatross Mellahs Petrels Seahens, etc.," wrote Jonathan Lambert in 1811, and Midshipman Greene, who stayed on the island in 1816, recorded in his diary "Sea Elephants herding together in immense numbers." Today the picture is greatly changed. A century and a half of human habitation has drastically reduced the larger, edible species, and the accidental introduction of rats from a shipwreck in 1882 accelerated the birds' decline on the main island. Wood-cutting, grazing by domestic stock and, more recently, fumes from the volcano have destroyed much of the natural vegetation near the settlement, and two bird subspecies, a bunting and a flightless moorhen, have become extinct on the main island. Curiously, one is liable to see more birds on the day of arrival than in several weeks ashore. When I first saw Tristan from the decks of M.V. -

Hitchcock, Systematic Agrostologist of the United States Department of Agriculture, u entitled Types of American grasses: a study of the American species of grasses described by Linnaeus, Gronovius, Sloane, Swartz, and Michaux," is an important contribution to our knowledge of American grasses. It is regarded as of fundamental importance in the critical sys- tematic investigation of any group of plants that the identity of the species described by earlier authors be determined with certainty. Often this identification can be made only by examining the type specimen, the original description being inconclusive. Under the American code of botanical nomenclature, which has been followed by the author of this paper, "the nomenclatorial t}rpe of a species or subspecies is the specimen to which the describer originally applied the name in publication." The procedure indicated by the American code, namely, to appeal to the type specimen when the original description is insufficient to identify the species, has been much misunderstood by European botanists. It has been taken to mean, in the case of the Linnsean herbarium, for example, that a specimen in that herbarium bearing the same name as a species described by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum must be taken as the type of that species regardless of all other considerations. -

Plant Fact Sheet ANNUAL HAIRGRASS Status Please consult the PLANTS Web site and your State Deschampsia danthonioides Department of Natural Resources for this plant’s current (Trin.) Munro status (e.g. threatened or endangered species, state Plant Symbol = DEDA noxious status, and wetland indicator values). Contributed by: USDA NRCS Plant Materials Center, Description and Adaptation Annual hairgrass is a fine textured, native, cool season Corvallis, Oregon grass with smooth, slender stems (culms) that are 10 to 60 cm tall. The form is upright to spreading, short, and somewhat tufted. The narrow leaf blades are hairless, rough on the edges, slightly in-rolled, 0.5 to 1.5 (2) mm wide, and 1 to 10 cm long. Flower heads (panicles) are open, 7 to 25 cm long, with ascending lower branches. Annual hairgrass occurs from near sea level at the coast to 8,000 feet in the Rocky Mountains. It is primarily found from Alaska south to Baja California and east to Montana and New Mexico; also the Northeast US and Chile. Key to identification: Annual hairgrass can be distinguished from slender hairgrass (Deschampsia elongata) and tufted hairgrass (Deschampsia cespitosa) by its weaker root development, fewer leaves, and smaller stature. Without close inspection it may be confused with other annual grasses, such as annual fescues (Vulpia spp.). Both may occur in waste areas. Consult botanical keys for proper identification. Relative abundance in wild: While most common in the Photo by Dale Darris, USDA NRCS Corvallis PMC. Pacific Coast states, the species can still be hard to locate. However, it can occur in large stands, especially in vernal Alternative Names pools dominated by annuals. -

WORLD HERITAGE NOMINATION - IUCN SUMMARY GOUGH ISLAND (UNITED KINGDOM) Summary prepared by IUCN/WCMC (March 1995) based on the original nomination supplied by the Government of the United Kingdom. This original and all documents in support of this nomination will be available for consultation at the meetings of the Bureau and the Committee. 1. LOCATION Located southeast of Tristan da Cunha Island in the south Atlantic Ocean, midway between Africa and South America. 2. JURIDICAL DATA The island and surrounding territorial waters were designated a wildlife area in 1976 under the Tristan da Cunha Conservation Ordinance. 3. IDENTIFICATION The island of Gough (6500ha) represents the eroded core of a Late Tertiary volcano. The east side of the island is dissected by a series of deep steep-sided valleys, which are separated by narrow serrated ridges. Along the west side of the island, rounded slopes extend from the central plateau to the western sea cliffs. Many offshore stacks and rocks are present, mostly within 100m of the main island. Vegetation comprises tussock grass around the coast and wet heath with moss and feldmark, and bog and swamp communities at higher elevations. Knowledge of the flora is incomplete but consists of some 35 native flowering plant and 28 native fern species. Over 30 of Gough's vascular plant taxa are endemic to the Tristan de Cunha islands. A total of 146 bryophytes have been recorded, eight of which are endemic, together with 20 fungi and 24 lichens. Invertebrate fauna also remains poorly known, but comprises 100 species, eight of which are endemic. -

Book Reviews 311 Sarah Thomas, Witnessing Slavery: Art and Travel in the Age of Abolition. London: Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, 2019. xiii + 286 pp. (Cloth US$55.00) This lavishly illustrated book by Australian art historian Sarah Thomas consid- ers art by European visitors to the Americas between 1760 and 1840. Engag- ing and provocative, it deals mainly with British publications during the hey- day of illustrated book publishing, persuasively arguing that these artworks were deeply influenced by the politics surrounding their production. Thomas focuses throughout on European travelers who drew or painted “on the spot,” actually witnessing slavery and thereby establishing a particular kind of episte- mological authority. Acknowledging that images of the enslaved almost inevitably deny their subjectivity, she insists that such images, when created by eyewitnesses, nonetheless hold special value and a place in the history of art that helps us understand the ways Europeans confronted slavery and aboli- tion. Following an introductory chapter, she considers the eighteenth-century discourse of Sensibility, from philosophy to painting. Beginning with “the sym- pathetic eyewitness” epitomized by John Gabriel Stedman’s self-portrait, stand- ing over his slain Maroon foe (“’Twas Yours to fall—but Mine to feel the wound”), she quickly turns to two leitmotifs of the abolition struggle: the oft- reproduced Am I not a Man and a Brother?, perhaps best known in its Josiah Wedgwood form, and the countless-times reprinted cross-section of the Liver- pool slaver Brookes, tracing revealing histories of both. The bulk of the chapter deals with the ways abolitionism penetrated high art in Britain, considering such paintings as George Morland’s Execrable Human Traffick and John Simp- son’s The Captive Slave. -
Breeding Biology of the Brown Noddy on Tern Island, Hawaii
Wilson Bull., 108(2), 1996, pp. 317-334 BREEDING BIOLOGY OF THE BROWN NODDY ON TERN ISLAND, HAWAII JENNIFER L. MEGYESI’ AND CURTICE R. GRIFFINS ABSTRACT.-we observed Brown Noddy (Anous stolidus pileatus) breeding phenology and population trends on Tern Island, French Frigate Shoals, Hawaii, from 1982 to 1992. Peaks of laying ranged from the first week in January to the first week in November; however, most laying occurred between March and September each year. Incubation length was 34.8 days (N = 19, SD = 0.6, range = 29-37 days). There were no differences in breeding pairs between the measurements of the first egg laid and successive eggs laid within a season. The proportion of light- and dark-colored chicks was 26% and 74%, respectively (N = 221) and differed from other Brown Noddy colonies studied in Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The length of time between clutches depended on whether the previous outcome was a failed clutch or a successfully fledged chick. Hatching, fledging, and reproductive success were significantly different between years. The subspecies (A. s. pihtus) differs in many aspects of its breeding biology from other colonies in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, in regard to year-round occurrence at the colony, frequent renesting attempts, large egg size, proportion of light and dark colored chicks, and low reproductive success caused by in- clement weather and predation by Great Frigatebirds (Fregata minor).
