The North West Hub has generally a similar age structure to Shropshire. The area has an older age profile compared to England, primarily this is resulting from a greater number of people aged 45 to 74. The North West Area has a similar number of children aged 0 to 4, 5 to 9 and 10 to 14 to Shropshire, but less than the English average. The area had a greater proportion of children aged 15 to 19 than Shropshire and England. The population structure though similar to Shropshire has a slightly lower proportion of people aged 80 to 84 and 80 plus compared to the Shropshire average. The area has fewer people aged 20 to 44 years compared to the average for England but a greater proportion of people aged 45 to 84 years. This is similar to Shropshire as a whole and to the other hubs. There are 8,350 children aged 5 to 18 accounting for (16%) of the overall population, this is similar to Shropshire but greater than the hubs located in the South. The maps over the page show the estimated population of 0 to 4 year olds and 5 to 18 year olds, expressed as a percentage of the whole population, and mapped by lower super output area (LLSOA). The areas with the largest percentage of 0 to 4 year olds are located in the wards of St Oswald’s, Oswestry East, Oswestry West and Gobowen, Selatyn and Weston Rhyn where (7%) to (8%) of the population are aged 0 to 4 years. The average for the North West Area and Shropshire was (5%). The areas with the largest percentage of 5 to 18 year olds are located in the wards of Gobowen, Selatyn and Weston Rhyn, the Mere’s, Oswestry South, Ruyton and Baschurch and Oswestry East. The average percentage for the 5 to 18 year group in Shropshire was (15%) and in the Hub area (16%). It is estimated that there are approximately 8,875 children in receipt of child benefit, the largest number of these are in the 5 to 10 year age group. In total 5,215 families claimed child benefit in August 2018, the majority of these, 2,525 claimed for one child.
