Monumental Inscriptions St Chad’s Church was built by the Rev T.M.B. Bulkeley-Owen and was presented by him to the Parish on January 14th 1886. When it was built the tithes of Township of Haughton came to £163.16.4d. The church was built of local stone from Shelvock Quarry. There are two versions of the story of the long wooden chest-like piece of furniture at the back of the Church. One being that it was made by a local man to be used as a coffin, but was not suitable, being too long and not wide enough. It was given eventually to the Church to be used for Church purposes. Here comes the superstition: - If used for other purposes and thrown out or given away, ill luck will be bestowed on the person involved. The other version which is believed to be the true one, is that a young man William Henry Davies, who lived at the Smithy at Rednal, went to work, but unfortunately he took pneumonia and died, the doctor had the young man embalmed and dressed in his butchers uniform and paid for his body to be brought home for burial and the chest in the Church is the coffin that brought him home. He was buried in St Chad’s Church and his grave can be found in Row 18. St Chad’s Church, Haughton, Shropshire. John Fitzphilip granted to Haughmond Abbey, Shrewsbury a plot of land in Haughton in the year 1333. That plot is known as Abbots Moor and was a ‘Retreat for the Monks’. Part of the land near Hen Barnes, was called Glasshouse Bank in 1808, where a small factory was situated where glass and tiles were made and used in many buildings around the area. A hemp yard was attached to the house. In the township of Haughton there are an unusual number of Welsh Field names:- Coch Leason meaning Red Field, Cae Derw meaning ‘Enclosure of Oak’, Ddol Issa meaning ‘Lower Dale’. Ddol Ucha meaning ‘Upper Dale’. Codiad yr Haul meaning ‘Rising of the Sun’ and Ddol y Saer meaning ‘Artizan’s Dale’ – This is now called Pool Parva. The Congregational Chapel at Haughton was rebuilt and enlarged, there was a house, garden and Chapel there in 1837, now all demolished. Haughton Pool was a ‘Ducking Pool’ where many people were ducked for minor offences, for example, one man was ducked for stealing a rabbit and killing it to feed his eight children.
