Qatar University P.O Box 2713 Doha, Qatar Abstract: This paper will attempt to examine the question: Given the advances in technology, why did the 2009 election protest movement fail to accomplish any of their goals while the participations of the 1979 Revolution were able to succeed in accomplishing their expressed objective? This question will provide a simplified test to a common tenant of those that support the use of technology as a means of bringing about regime change: that advances in communication technology are diffusing power away from governments and toward individual citizens and non-state actors. In order to answer this question this paper will examine the role of technology as an enabling factor in both the 1979 revolution and 2009 election protests. A brief historical context of the 1979 and 2009 conflicts will be provided, followed by a short history about the use of the Internet in Iran and finally the concluding remarks.     Religious Ideology and Discourse: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Marsiya-e-Hussain Snobra Rizwan Lecturer, Department of English Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan Tariq Saeed Assisstant Professor, Department of English Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan Ramna Fayyaz Lecturer, Department of English Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan Pakistan ABSTRACT This paper employs Fairclough’s framework of critical discourse analysis (Fairclough, 2001; 2003) as a research tool to demonstrate how mourning discourse of marsiya manages to win favourite responses from Pakistani audiences by foregrounding certain linguistic conventions. The data comprising popular marsiyas are based on responses obtained through a small-scale survey and are analyzed from the perspective of ideology and emotive appeal embedded in discourse. The analysis illustrates that discourse conventions of marsiya—in addition to traditional commemoration of martyrdom of Imam Hussian—serve to elaborate, explain and disseminate religious doctrines in Pakistani Shi‘ah masses. Keywords: Marsiya, Critical Discourse Analysis, Ideology, Shiism 1. Introduction This paper provides a close study to examine the distinguishing features of marsiya-e-Hussain and the way discursive choices of certain transitivity features, figurative language and lyrical conventions serve to make it a distinct poetic genre of its own. Though marsiya recitation is taken to be a means of commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussain; nevertheless, it means much more to Shi’ia community. Along with other mourning rituals, marsiya is considered to be a means of seeking waseela (mediation) from the saints, teaching and learning religious ideologies, seeking God’s pleasure and so on (‘Azadari; mourning for Imam Hussain’, 2009). All these objectives are achieved by following certain discourse conventions which in turn construct certain discursive reality and weigh heavily on the formation of distinctive opinion and religious ideology in Shi‘ah masses.

Outright forgeries, including those about an alleged Turkish Divan by Nezami Ganjavi and falsified verses first published in Azerbaijan SSR, which have found their way into Persian publications, are also in the focus of the authors‖ attention. An important contribution of the book is that it highlights three rare and previously neglected historical sources with regards to the population of Arran and Azerbaijan, which provide information on the social conditions and ethnography of the urban Iranian Muslim population of the area and are indispensable for serious study of the Persian literature and Iranian culture of the period. Wilks, Ph.D. Horses as Heroes in Medieval Islamicate Literature “The horse is to the man as the wing is to the bird.” With these words, taken from his 11th century Turkish-Arabic dictionary, Mahmud Kashgari tries to express the importance of the horse in human life.1 Certainly the economic and political importance of horses in the history of most parts of the world is undeniable, and the Middle East is no exception. The ancient Persian empire of the Achaemenids used horses in a “pony express” system to facilitate communication across their vast territories. The rapid Arab conquests of neighboring lands in the 7th century following the advent of Islam, which were largely achieved on horseback, changed the area forever, and later waves of Turkic migration from Central Asia, also on horseback, followed by the Mongol invasions, had a lasting influence on the culture of the entire region. But Kashgari’s analogy of a horse being like the wings of a man goes beyond the practical uses of horses.

The traditional sports and games of Tajik people, which from ancient times survived till our modern times, are: archery, jogging, jumping, wrestling, horse race, chavgon (equestrian polo), buzkashi, chess, nard (backgammon), etc. The article begins with an introduction observing the Tajik people, their history, origin and hardships to keep their culture, due to several foreign invasions. The article consists of sections Running, Jumping, Lance Throwing, Archery, Wrestling, Buzkashi, Chavgon, Chess, Nard (Backgammon) and Conclusion. In each section, the author tries to analyze the origin, history and characteristics of each game refering to ancient and old Persian literature. Traditional sports of Tajik people contribute as the symbol and identity of Persian culture at one hand, and at another, as the combination and synthesis of the Persian and Central Asian cultures. Central Asia has a rich history of the traditional sports and games, and significantly contributed to the sports world as the birthplace of many modern sports and games, such as polo, wrestling, chess etc. Unfortunately, this theme has not been yet studied academically and internationally in modern times. Few sources and materials are available in Russian, English and Central Asian languages, including Tajiki.
