He also began his master in Architecture and later on withdrew from his program and started writing scripts and directing short films, documentaries and commercials. Sanaeeha also wrote and directed two animated TV series and a TV fiction film. RISK OF ACID RAIN is his debut feature film which has won several awards in both Iranian and international festivals.

8 Director’s Profile: Born in 1969, Mehrdad Khoshbakht took the Khuzestan Youth Cinema course where he learned directing. In 1999, he made his first movie “FLIGHT” on the subject of the afterlife and went on to direct two other films “THE LAST JOURNEY” and” THE BRIDGE” on the same topic. Khoshbakht has made several movies, including “EXTRA TIME” (2007), “THE SOUND OF MY FOOT” (2010), and “EAGLE OF THE DESERT” (2012). Two series by Khoshbakht have been aired by iFilm, namely “THE DECIUS CITY “and “THE SINISTER MIND”. He has experienced editing and acting in some movies as well.

12 Director’s Profile: Born in 1971 in Tehran, Niki Karimi is one of the most famous, internationally acclaimed actress and filmmaker in Iran. She began her work as an actress with films such as “SARA” by Dariush Mehrjouii, which she won best actress award at “San Sebastian Film Festival and in Nantes Film Festival in 1992. After that she worked in more than 25 films which brought her awards both nationally and internationally such as awards at “Taormina Film Festival” in , “Cairo Film Festival” in Egypt and “Fajr Film Festival” in Tehran, and Best Actress awards at Iranian Film Society. In 2001, she started film making by making a documentary about infertility named “TO HAVE OR NOT TO HAVE” which was the beginning of her career as a filmmaker. 14 Director’s Profile: Born in 1962, Manijeh Hekmat is one of the prominent figures in political cinema in Iran. In 1995, she started her film career as a producer. In 2002, based on her long studies and field-works, Hekmat directed her debut feature, WOMEN’S PRISON, on the situation of Iranian women prisoners. The film was premiered in Venice Film Festival and then entered the festival circuit. In 2007, her second film, THREE WOMEN, was shown in more than 80 international film festivals starting with Berlinale. She has also directed a number of documentaries – most notably NGOS IN IRAN (2003); ME, MY ROOM AND MY FRIENDS (2004); HUNDRED YEARS PARLIAMENT IN IRAN (2005); WOMEN COME OUT OF THE HOUSE (2006) and THE LULLABY (2016). 16 Director’s Profile: Born in 1941 in Tehran, Masoud Kimiai is best-known for his QAISAR which set a new trend in Iranian cinema and an archetypal formula for problem dramas. Kimiai began his film career as assistant to Samuel Khachikian. In 1968, he made his debut feature, but one year later, he came back with his ground breaking QAISAR and established himself as one of the key figures of Iranian cinema. Up to 1979, most of Kimiai’s films were closely interweaved with the movies of rebellion and vengeance even in his film adaptations –e.g. from ’s novel in DASH AKOL, from Mahmoud Dowlat-Abadi’s novel in THE EARTH and from Jorge Luis Borges’ short story GHAZAL. Although most of Kimiai’s works have been well received by Iranian audience in the last three decades, he is best-known in international scene for SNAKE FANG which was highly-acclaimed in Berlinale.

26 Director’s Profile: Born in 1977 in Ardebil, Naghi Nemati is a graduate of “Film Directing” from Soureh College of in 2004. He started making short films since 1993 and his first short film, LIKE THE UMBRELLA OF THE KIDS received several awards in national festivals. He made his second short film, THE LOST HOMEWORK in 1999 and his next film, THE CHILDREN’S SONGS (2000), brought him several prizes like Isfahan International Children Film Festival’s Best Short Film Award. Naghi Nemati’s next two short films, FREE LINE (2005) and WITH HIM (2006) were shown in many national and international film festivals and collected more than 10 awards at festivals in Poland, Austria, Iran… He’s been involved in different positions in Iranian film industry as scriptwriter, editor, and photography and his first feature film, THOSE THREE (2007), premiered and awarded at Locarno and then shown at more than 50 festivals, took him 2 years to make in a remote snowy region.
