Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman 9 34th Fajr Film Festival 1-11 February 2016 Tehran, Iran Fajr Film Festival is Iran's annual film festival, held every February from 1-11 in Tehran, Iran. The festival, started in 1982, is under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in Iran. It takes place every year on the anniversary of the Iranian revolution. Page 3 | Health Page 4 | Fajr 22 Movies to Compete in 34th Fajr Film Festival 22 domestic movies would compete in the biggest cinematic event of the country to be held in February. A total of 22 movies, including Bodyguard, 'Wooden Lollipop', 'The Dragon Enters', 'Lanturi' (literally meaning numpty), 'Being Born', 'The World Redemption', 'The Girl', 'Barcode', 'Anger and Hubbub', 'Cyanide', 'Scandal', 'Malaria', 'Breath', 'Blind Point', 'Midnight' and 'Inversion' compete in the section. Top Rivals at 34th Fajr Film Festival Films by famous young and veteran directors vie for the Crystal Simorgh awards at the 34th Fajr Film Festival next month. A brief look at the list shows that this year the festival will host a wide range of movies from drama and political to war and comedy, made by directors whose previous works have been welcomed warmly both by the audience and critics. According to Financial Tribune, top films will be waiting for in the biggest film event in Iran regarding their directors’ background. Of the total 22, five directors who attended last year’s edition include Kamal Tabrizi, Farzad Motamen, Mostafa Kiai, Hatef Alimardani and Hooman Seyedi. Tabrizi, who is a versatile director of different genres of movies and has usually hit the box office with his comedies, will present ‘Mina’s Possibility’, a drama on doubt and infidelity. Motamen, whose last film ‘The Long Farewell’ won the best actor award in the 33rd edition, comes back with ‘When Did You Last See Sahar?’, a mystery film, which Motamen believes is the best work on his resume. So far, he has made nine movies, mostly dramas and also a comedy and film noir, but this one is “fast-paced and centers on a sensitive social issue”. Young Kiai has progressed a lot since his first film in 2009. His last film ‘The Ice Age’ won the best supporting actress award in the 33rd edition and was among the year’s best-sellers. His fifth film ‘Barcode’ has three actors from ‘The Ice Age’ as well as many other notable actors and is expected to be another step forward in Kiai’s artistic career. Alimardani’s ‘Binam Alley’ won the best actress award in the 33rd edition. Now the star-studded cast of ‘In the Seventh Month’ has intrigued the audience to look forward to watching another powerful drama on the everyday life of two middle-class urban families in modern times. Seyedi’s ‘Confessions of a Dangerous Mind’, as a director, did not win an award in the competition section last year; however, his performance in ‘ I Am Diego Maradona’ brought him the best supporting actor award. This year he comes with ‘Sound and Fury’. The many subtleties of Iranian Cinema has also stemmed from the filmmakers’ need to circumvent the harsh censorship rules of the state and the financial limitations imposed on independent filmmakers. Despite these limitations, post‐revolutionary Iranian Cinema has been a reGular feature at major film festivals around the Globe. The minimalist Art Cinema of Iran often blurs the borders between documentary and fiction films. Directors employ non‐professional actors. Male and female directors and actors darinGly explore the themes of Gender inequality and sexual exploitation of women in their work, even thouGh censorship laws forbid female and male actors from touchinG one another. In the process, filmmakers have created aesthetically sublime metaphors that bypass the censors and directly communicate with a universal audience. This course is an introduction to contemporary Iranian cinema and its interaction with Political Islam. Special attention will be paid to how Iranian Realism has 1 developed a more tolerant discourse on Islam, culture, Gender, and ethnicity for Iran and the Iranian plateau, with films about Iran, AfGhanistan, and Central Asia.

  • Gefesselter Blick, Freies Urteil Asghar Farhadis Realismus – Eine Werksichtung
I’m sorry I’m not with you tonight. My absence is out of respect for the people of my country, and those of the other six nations who have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U. S. Dividing the world into the ›us‹ and ›our enemies‹ categories creates fear – a deceitful justification for aggression and war.

  • Imes Alumni Newsletter
IMES ALUMNI NEWSLETTER 2015 Winter 6, Issue From the Head of IMES By Anthony Gorman Welcome again to the latest IMES Alumni Newsletter! As usual, this winter issue provides details of the IMES MSc and PhD graduations last November, always an emotional occasion for the department as well as for the graduating students themselves. The last months have been busy in the department with many enjoyable academic and social occasions. The Watt event in October which marked the 50th anniversary of Montgomery Watt’s inaugural lecture as Professor of Islamic Studies at Edinburgh stands out as a particularly memorable occasion marked by an impressive evening of lectures and a symposium the following day. Other highlights were a short series of seminars on Shi’ism (part of the larger IMES Research seminar series) as well as the programme of the Alwaleed Centre. As usual we feature a number of contributions from current and former students as well as coverage of the social activities of the postgraduate student body. One particularly impressive feature is the translation - into English and Slovene - of the poetry of Ashraf Fayadh by our PhD student Jona Fras. The History of IMES column is also dedicated to the student presence in the department. Since I have recently stepped down as Head of IMES I will also be vacating the post of Editor of the Newsletter. My thanks to all that have contributed to its production over the last three years, Professor especially to a series of fine Assistant Editors, Emese Lorencsics, Fayaz Alibhai, Farshed Kazemi Carole and, for her very capable work on this issue, Hester Gartrell.
