Googoosh and Diasporic Nostalgia for the Pahlavi Modern
Popular Music (2017) Volume 36/2. © Cambridge University Press 2017, pp. 157–177 doi:10.1017/S0261143017000113 Iran’s daughter and mother Iran: Googoosh and diasporic nostalgia for the Pahlavi modern FARZANEH HEMMASI University of Toronto Faculty of Music, 80 Queen's Park, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 2C5, Canada E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This article examines Googoosh, the reigning diva of Persian popular music, through an evaluation of diasporic Iranian discourse and artistic productions linking the vocalist to a feminized nation, its ‘victimisation’ in the revolution, and an attendant ‘nostalgia for the modern’ (Özyürek 2006) of pre-revolutionary Iran. Following analyses of diasporic media that project national drama and desire onto her persona, I then demonstrate how, since her departure from Iran in 2000, Googoosh has embraced her national metaphorization and produced new works that build on historical tropes link- ing nation, the erotic, and motherhood while capitalising on the nostalgia that surrounds her. A well-preserved blonde in her late fifties wearing a silvery-blue, décolletage-revealing dress looks deeply into the camera lens. A synthesised string section swells in the back- ground. Her carefully groomed brows furrow with pained emotion, her outstretched arms convey an exhausted supplication, and her voice almost breaks as she sings: Do not forget me I know that I am ruined You are hearing my cries IamIran,IamIran1 Since the 1979 establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iranian law has dictated that all women within the country’s borders must be veiled; women must also refrain from singing in public except under circumscribed conditions. -

Karlovy Vary 2012 By Gönül Dönmez-Colin Fall 2012 Issue of KINEMA 47th KARLOVY VARY FILM FESTIVAL Over 200 films, including 34 shorts and 56 documentaries, with 23 world premieres and more than120,000 tickets sold. Karlovy Vary International Film Festival celebrated its 47th year with triumph this summer despite budget cuts that have also been menacing many other film festivals. The Grand Jury, headed by Richard Peña, programme director of New York Film Festival, and including Montreal’s well-known actor François Papineau, judged a dozen films over eight days (June 29 - July 7, 2012). In the Official Competition, Pele akher (The Last Step) by Ali Mosaffa from Iran, focused on a somewhat confused young wife-widow played by Leila Hatami, well-known for her role as an irritable housewife in Asghar Farhadi’s Oscar winner, A Separation. The Last Step however lacked the well-written script of A Separation and also suffered from Hatami’s being cast in a similar role as in her earlier film, Thefeature, a loose adaptation inspired by Tolstoy’s novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886) and James Joyce’s story The Dead (1914) was more like a pastiche of several Iranian films that preceded it. French Canadian Rafaël Ouellet’s Camion about a truck-driver whose life changes drastically following a traffic accident that leaves an unknown woman dead captivated the audience with its remarkable cinematography and sound narrative that succeeded in avoiding melodrama despite its subject matter. Deine Schönheit ist nichts wert (Your Beauty is Worth Nothing) by Hüseyin Tabak, an Austrian entry whose ’filmic’ identity became controversial in Turkey after having won several awards, including the best Turkish film at Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival’s national competition, focused on a twelve-year oldboyfrom Turkey and his alienation as an immigrant in Vienna. -

I would also like to thank my supervisors Professor Kevin Dawe and Dr Sita Popat for their constructive suggestions and patience. Abstract This research examines the changes in conditions of music and dance after the 1979 revolution in Iran. My focus is the restrictions imposed on women instrumentalists, dancers and singers and the ways that have confronted them. I study the social, religious, and political factors that cause restrictive attitudes towards female performers. I pay particular attention to changes in some specific musical genres and the attitudes of the government officials towards them in pre and post-revolution Iran. I have tried to demonstrate the emotional and professional effects of post-revolution boundaries on female musicians and dancers. Chapter one of this thesis is a historical overview of the position of female performers in pre-modern and contemporary Iran. -

Books are worthy of being considered as the most brilliant symbol of cultural dynamism. Hence, the venerable status of pen and the sublime rank of writing are to be glorified not merely by authorities but through public witnesses throughout the world. Laying stress on the inestimable blend of Islamic and Iranian cultures, the Islamic Republic of Iran feels obliged to uphold the lofty realm of pen, and to support men of thought. To fulfill this end, the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance has inaugurated «The Award for Book of the Year» in 1983, and «The World Award for Book of the Year of the I.R.I» in 1993, aiming at selecting and introducing worthwhile international books, and honoring their authors, editors, and translators for elevating the general knowledge and culture, and developing public scholarship/readership with the Islamic and Iranian written heritage. -
"Désintérêt" Politique À Une Fascination Culturelle Mutuelle DISSERTATION
France-Iran: dans le sillage du "désintérêt" politique à une fascination culturelle mutuelle DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Jaleh Sharif, MA Graduate Program in French and Italian The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Professor Jennifer Willging, Adviser Professor Danielle Marx-Scouras Professor Richard Davis 1 Copyright by Jaleh Sharif 2015 2 Abstract This dissertation studies the history of Francophonie in Iran since the first fructuous official interactions between France and Persia in 17th century. Francophonie, i.e., the use of the French language and culture outside of France, has followed a winding path throughout several centuries in Persia (Iran). It grew from the interest of the Persian elite in a French society that neither engaged Persia militarily, nor attempted to compete with other European powers doing so. France's apparent lack of political interest in Persia became an official French diplomatic policy of "désintéressement," or "disinterest." This "hands off" policy nourished a Persian/Iranian fascination with French culture during the 19th and 20th centuries, as France was seen as a potential ally against the growing menace of Russia and Great Britain. As a result, and despite the growing political influence of other Western powers in Persia/Iran, the French language enjoyed the privileged status of first foreign Western language in Persia/Iran for almost a century, before being replaced by the English language due to the entry of the United States onto the international stage after the Second World War.
