HISTORY

Barangay Matingkis is a former Subol, a part of Catalanaoan, a barrio of the town of Munoz. It is composed of four groups of houses called Pulo. The four are Pinag-Ospitalan, Mauring-uring, Ubbog, and Camanacsacan. It is also a part of Hacienda Cojuangco, two kilometer west of Bakal III.

The residents of the place were all Ilocanos who came from the Ilocos region, Pangasinan, Tarlac and the towns of Aliaga, San Jose and Nampicuan. Among the first settlers were Eugenio Espiritru, Petronilo Lucading, Matias Gonzales, Pedro Gonzales, Estanislao Pacada, Isidro Domingo, Crispin Padiernos, Gavino Estillore, Manuel Agliam, Vicente Gonzales, Felix Eugenio, Calixto Gonzales, Seminiano Sixto, Gregorio Agliam, Elino Ulep and Manuel Gonzales.

It was in the year 1919 when people first dwell in the place. It was then like a forest area where a “TINGKIS” tree grew. This tree is among the Bocaue species, which is like a bamboo. That is why in 1947 when the place was finally separated from Catalanaoan, the name Subol was changed to “Matingkis”, meaning a place where many “Tingkis” trees are grown.

In 1963, when a certain Gil Gadi, a Liberal Party mayoralty aspirant seeking to challenge Dominador Santos a contender, served a petition to the higher authority that Matingkis be separated from the town of Munoz since the land is owned by Talavera. It was a political move, since the residents of Matingkis favors Dominador Santos, so a big number of voters will be slashed from him (Santos) if the petition will be granted. So Matingkis now is a barrio of Talavera.
