Bearskin, by the Brothers Grimm: This dark tale tells of a man who makes an agreement with the devil to live in a bearskin without bathing or praying for seven years in return for wealth and freedom. During the seven years, he finds true love that transcends outer appearance. Beauty and the Beast, Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont: In this story, a beautiful young girl agrees to live in a castle with a hideous beast in order to save her father's life. However, she later falls in love with the beast - who is actually a handsome prince who has been cursed. The Boy who Cried Wolf, from Aesop's Fables: A cautionary tale about what happens when a child repeatedly lies and plays a prank. The Child who Came from an Egg, from the Violet Fairy Book: This is a story about a beautiful girl born from a bird's egg which was given to a childless queen. Cinderella, by the Brothers Grimm: This rags to riches fairy tale follows Cinderella from her time serving as a maid to her cruel stepmother and stepsisters to a visit from her fairy godmother, who ultimately helps her marry a prince. -

Children all over the world know The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Pea and other tales. But Andersen also wrote very important works in many other literary genres. As we will discover, Andersen’s writings are not just for children. Further, Andersen very often in his works gives insightful commentary that reflects social, philosophical and technological changes throughout the 19th Century. This course will be a study of 30 fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen as well as extracts from his novels, travelogues, poems, diaries and of his autobiography, The Fairy Tale of My Life. -

Hans Christian Andersen in Musical Translation by Jean Christensen Those of us who work in two cultures are fascinated by the peculiar demands and limitations of translating the sensual and intellectual qualities of one language to those of another, and by the challenges of transferring ideas from one historical time to another. A similar challenge exists for today's composers who set out to transform a text into music, but this is a process that also involves other considerations, for music has the additional potential to project multidimensional time and space. H.C. Andersen was no stranger to musical renditions of his work during his lifetime. In fact, because of his early experience as a singer, dancer, and actor, he wrote librettos for vaudeville and opera; however, many of those endeavors resulted in works that were not very compelling. More interesting were the musical scores for which his texts were chosen by his contemporaries. -

The Dreams of Hans Christian Andersen 1 Patricia Garfield, Ph.D. The Dreams of Hans Christian Andersen (Originally presented at IASD, June 21, 2004, Copenhagen, Denmark) Introduction Tak for sidst, which is to say, “thanks for last time.” Copenhagen has been the site of many happy visits with my late husband and some Danes have become dear friends. In particular, I want to give very special thanks to my Danish friend and translator, Bente Licht Mirow. She not only found Andersen’s journals on the Internet but translated his dreams recorded in them from old Danish into English. She even located an additional dream that hadn’t been included in the official list of his dreams. Beyond that generosity, our discussions about Andersen over the last months added immeasurably to my understanding of him. Tak, Bente. Olaf Hansen, too, kindly shared his knowledge of Danish culture and sent me a compact disc with the haunting tune from Viking times called “I Dreamt Me A Dream Last Night” (of silk and precious cloth…) Tak, Olaf. Brief Biography of Andersen Hans Christian Andersen, or H. C. Andersen (as he’s called in Denmark), described his life as a fairy tale. It’s easy to see why. A barely educated boy from a poor family, only son of a cobbler and an illiterate washerwoman, Andersen became the friend of royal and aristocratic families. THE UGLY DUCKLING, HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON: A STORY OF TRANSFORMATION ANITA L. GAMBOS Introduction The Ugly Duckling is a small story that offers universal hope to the disenfranchised. Here, a misfit, rejected by family and society, makes the microcosmic journey of all who seek self-actualization. In Fairy Tales and the Art of Subversion, Jack Zipes notes in his chapter, "Hans Christian Andersen and the Discourse of the Dominated": (The Ugly Ducking) has generally been interpreted as a parable of Andersen's own success story because the naturally gifted underdog survives a period of "ugliness" to reveal its innate beauty. (87) Therefore, to understand the significance of the transformation, from ugly to beautiful, it is important to view the passage against the backdrop of Andersen's life. Andersen's Life Influences Hans Christian Andersen was clearly a product of the nineteenth century, a period of broad-sweeping changes in both world and national views, when tenets of biology, eugenics and race became subjects of public discourse. Andersen was born to poverty in 1805 in the old provincial Danish town of Odense. The son of a cobbler who loved books and taught him- self and his son to read, Andersen grew up hearing his father say that he (the father) was of aristocratic origin. Andersen's mother worked as a washerwoman; she was uneducated and superstitious, but introduced Andersen to folklore. He was also greatly influenced by his grandmother, a grounds person at Odense Hospital, a local workhouse. Andersen spent a great deal of time there listening to elderly, female inmates who repeated old stories and the traditional folk tales of Denmark. -

Dreams and stories in Hans Christian Andersen: Metanoia as literary resource and community acceptance Angélica García-Manso University of Extremadura, Spain Abstract This paper analyzes the motif of the "dream within the dream" or Metanoia as one of the most interesting structural components in the stories of Hans Christian Andersen. For example, the considerations about “The Shadow” (as well as other stories) reveal how, moreover, Metanoia has important repercussions on the aspect of "community acceptance" in the writer's work, without forgetting the role of Metanoia in the light of how stories are constructed through internal references and the duality between reality and dream. Introduction: From Catharsis to Metanoia The main argument of the present study lies in the analysis of the literary resource of Metanoia applied to the stories of Hans Christian Andersen. In this way, it is argued that Metanoia occupies the same place in the Danish writer's stories with regard to "community acceptance" as does recourse to Catharsis in classical tragedy. Such is the ultimate goal of this essay: to show how Metanoia organizes different levels of the story as well as themes about the individual, the family and, finally, the community. Really, the social implication of the spectator in the literary work offers one of its most significant examples in the concept of Catharsis from classical Greek tragedy. According to this notion of Catharsis, the audience's complicity in a plot culminates in a process of personal and social purification that fosters the idea of identity and of belonging to a group. Indeed, Catharsis proceeds, like the Greek tragedy itself in its origins, from a religious ritual (Dodds, 1962, p.
