Wisconsin Horse Council Trails Committee is Busy Throughout the Year!

By Kricket Jewett, WHC Trail Committee Co-Chair

The Wisconsin Horse Council Trails Committee has had another busy year! Not only will we be awarding grants to 12 projects, the committee hosts a Trail Master Certification Course, offers a Ride/Drive Program, has a both at Midwest Horse Fair, works with www.trailmiester.com updating trail maps and sends representatives to National and International Trails Conferences. In 2020 we will be hosting the 15th annual Trails Master Certification Course on May 13 -16th at Hartmann Creek State Park near Waupaca. The Wisconsin DNR provides grant funds to allow both DNR employees, other land managers, as well as volunteers to attend the class for free. The class is limited to 16 people who learn from internationally known trail builder Mike Riter of Trail Design Specialist. We also partner with the Glacial Drumlin Horse Trail Association who graciously allow the class to use their trail tools, and help with paperwork. At this time the class is has two openings. During the class attendees learn and are tested on the following topics –

Trail Design and Layout - We will cover advances on how to properly design and layout a trail. We will discuss how to avoid erosion, user conflicts, and impact problems through design. This session will give you a good working knowledge of what causes trails to erode through /soil relationships. An outdoor session will consist of a series of flagging and layout drills designed to utilize the concepts covered in the classroom

Trail Construction - We will cover proper corridor clearing for all types of use and proper construction of a durable tread surface. Various types of tread construction, and raised tread sections, switchbacks and a section on bridges and boardwalks are also included. An outdoor session will consist of construction techniques covered in the classroom. A demonstration of tread construction machinery may be included.

Trail Maintenance - We will cover maintenance issues on trails. We will discuss how to make long-term repairs and lower environmental impacts. Trail hardening techniques along with rehabilitation of disused trails will also be covered. The outdoor session will consist of maintenance techniques covered in the classroom. Wisconsin Horse Council Trails Committee is Busy Throughout the Year!

Crew leader - This portion of the program will be held entirely outdoors and will give each student the opportunity to lead a crew. The day will be broken into three sessions. At the end of the third session certificates for those that completed the course will be issued.

The Ride Wisconsin Program allows for riders and drivers to log hours in the , while outside of the arena. This year we have worked to revamp the program slightly, with new milestone hours and awards! If you are out riding, you may as well earn rewards, and it is a fun to look back over your year of riding and marvel at the time you and your horse were able to get a way from it all! You must be a member of Wisconsin Horse Council, and for an additional $10 you can join the Ride Wisconsin Program!

At the Midwest Horse Fair you will find the Trails Booth in the Coliseum in booth number C81 next to the Wisconsin DNR booth. Please stop by next year and chat with our volunteers and learn more about our many programs. We look forward to people stopping by and sharing their trail experiences with us!

In 2018 we sold the last of the Trail Books, and for the past several years, we have been working towards going completely online with the Wisconsin Horse Trails and information. We have partnered with Robert at www.trailmiester.com as our recommended trail resource. This site still needs more information. As a trail user, you can register and submit local trail maps and pictures as well as information about the park. The trails committee continues to update when we can, but could certainly use help to make this the best equine trail mapping site available!

We have created a Facebook page called Wisconsin Horse Council – Trails where information on local, state and national news about trails is shared, grant opportunities, work days at parks, and whatever other good stuff Facebook available to share! Be sure to go and “like” us!

I would like to thank each of the Trails Committee members for the hard work they put in to make each of these projects successful! Page 10 April Wisconsin Horse Council

Focus on Fun at Governor Dodge State Park

As you plan your summer travels, don’t forget to include a visit to Governor Dodge State Park, where fun is always in season. The park’s 5,270 acres offer amazing opportunities for outdoor fun of all varieties in the heart of Southwest Wisconsin’s beautiful Driftless area. With or without an equine companion, you ‘ll find lots of activities to enjoy. For trail riders, the best 6 months of the year begin on May 1st with the season opening of the park’s 25 miles of horse trails. Along the 15mile Driftless trail that circles the park’s perimeter, you’ll explore rolling terrain from deeply forested valleys to prairie vistas. Get ready to show off your horse’s flashiest gait and your best parade wave to the boaters on Twin Valley Lake as you traverse the wide grassy trail atop the dam. Look for some of the Friends of Governor Dodge Equestrians to be out celebrating opening day on May 1st. On June 7th, the Governor Dodge-Equestrians will focus on fun with a photo scavenger hunt ride and hike fundraiser with the title Focus on the Future. Bring your camera to document success in locating the scavenger hunt items and to use the selfie stations located along the route. This fun event includes lunch, musical entertainment, silent auction and lots of camaraderie. It’s also open to nonriders, who will join the park naturalist on a scavenger hunt hike. Registration is now open visit, with FREE T shirts to those who register by May 12. Visit www.GovDodgeEquestrians.com for details. Throughout the season, shorter rides take in the varied scenery at the park. Be sure to plan a stop at the Cox Hollow concession stand, recipient of the 2019 Friends of Wisconsin State Park’s Gold Seal Award for best ice cream in a state park! The cones are delicious, and HUGE! Hungry for a great burger? Consider a side trip to the Pleasant Ridge Store, a Dodgeville tradition located at the intersection of County Highways ZZ and YZ. Exit the Governor Dodge horse trails at the northeast corner of the park (up the long hill past the group campsites and then left) and ride a short distance east along the shoulder of County Hwy ZZ to reach Pleasant Ridge. With a shaded high line rest area for the horses, this iconic bar offers indoor and deck seating where you can stretch your legs, have an excellent sandwich, and drink in the view along with your cold beverage. Camping at Governor Dodge with friends or family? Check out the swimming beaches at the park’s two lakes or rent a kayak, canoe or paddleboat to explore their meandering shorelines. Hike to one of the park’s signature landmarks like Stevens Falls, the large or small caves or the Deer Cove Rock Shelter. Join the Friends of Governor Dodge for a free ice cream cone at a shared trails Open House and Ice Cream Social on August 1st, or for cake and ice cream at Smokey the Bear’s birthday party on August 8th. Both events are held at the shelter adjoining the horse campground. The Friends of Governor DodgeEquestrians hope to see you at our beautiful park this summer. When you’re there, please check out the iron ranger donation boxes at the horse campground and the day ride area. All contributions go directly toward the new equestrian campground! Jefferson County Draft Horse Association

By Jackie Schuster, JCDHA Secretary

The Jefferson County Draft Horse Association is marking its 35th anniversary this year. Our first meeting was July 1985. Eleven members founded the club. Some are still members of the club; Dave and Alice Kenna, Carol Berner and Fran Gross. The association started out with a few members and has grown to 70 members at one point in time. Right now, we have 35 members and in the middle of our membership drive. The mission of the group is to promote the draft horse and the preservation of farm technology. Members come from all over the state not just Jefferson county. The counties are Dane, Jefferson, Columbia, Portage, Walworth, Waukesha, Dodge and the state of Illinois. We have a variety of breeds- Belgians, Clydesdales, , Norwegian Fjords, Halflingers, draft crosses, Suffulk Punch, and Tennessee Walkers We have some members that don’t own horses but like to help other members with hitching and showing of the gentle giants. Our members are a diverse group who uses their horses for farming, , riding, logging, breeding, sleigh/ rides and exhibiting at fairs, parades and carriage businesses. You will find us four times a year at Old World Wisconsin in Eagle, Wisconsin for spring and fall plowing, Fourth of July Parade, threshing/ haymaking in July. You will also see a team of draft horses pulling the antique Omnibus around the villages. The association has a following at Old World Wisconsin for it seems that their attendance is up on the weekends we are there. We receive no compensation from Old World Wisconsin other than a delightful lunch. You might have also seen some of the members at past events- Midwest Horse Fair, county fairs, Smithsonian Institute traveling “Barn Again” and Farm Technology Days 2019. Our source of income is by affordable club dues and a Brat Fry at Glenn’s Meat Market in Watertown. The money we receive helps us sponsor Wisconsin Horse Council Scholarship and sponsor classes at county fairs. Each year we choose an Ambassador to represent us at events. They can be male or female between 13 and 21 years old, who submit an essay on why they would make a good candidate for ambassador. Jefferson County Draft Horse Association has been a grateful recipient of a Wisconsin Horse Council grant and these funds has enabled us to carry on our appearances at Old World Wisconsin. So, the grant has been critical to us to continue these educational events. We would like to thank the Wisconsin Horse Council for the grant we received and to thank Marcia Haase for filling out the application. Come out and see us May 16-17 at Old World Wisconsin for spring plowing and a ride on the Omnibus. Our next meeting is at Richard Durrant April 25 in Poplar Grove, Illinois. Continued on next page... 2019 Draft Horse Youth and Novice Congress

The 2019 Draft Horse Youth and Novice Congress was once again held in conjunction with the Dane County Fair in Madison, Wisconsin. This was the 5th year for this event, but a first for the organizers. The event was organized by the Midwest Draft Horse Enthusiasts. The Clydesdale breed was well represented, along with , Belgian, and entries. This Congress is an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to get experience handling draft horses, and learn how to present themselves and their horse in the show ring. You don’t necessarily have to have a horse to participate. There are mentors willing to share their horses, for those that don’t own their own. There even was a Pee Wee showmanship class this year, organized by Kim Behn. In this event kids 7 and under had the opportunity to show a horse in a showmanship class. Each child was accompanied by an adult, just in case the horse was too excited to strut its stuff. Participants have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field for the first two days, and then put what they learned on display in the show ring. After each learning seminar, there is an opportunity for practice and one-on-one instruction with the seminar presenters. During the show, every effort is made to make it a fun experience. The spirit of the Congress is on display, as participants share equipment and help each other to give everyone the opportunity to try as many classes as possible. There is an award given to a participant that demonstrates these values. The award is in memory of Jody Hinz, a young lady who loved showing her Draft horses, but was lost in a car accident the winter after the first congress. Class winners receive awards and a premium, but the experience and memories are invaluable. Besides the seminars and show, there are even more opportunities for fun. There is a pizza party and an ice cream social, not to mention a costume class to round out the weekend. The following people deserve our thanks for sharing their knowledge with our participants: Safe Trailering – Irongate Equine Clinic Harnessing and Driving – Logan Behn Showmanship – Ken Airgood and Logan Behn Hoof Care – Ken Airgood Riding Seminar – Kelly Schutter-Ruiz Understanding “Normal” Equine Health – Irongate Equine Clinic Equine – Cassandra Strommen, Purple Scoop Judging – Logan Behn Fitting and Grooming– Kim Behn and Bonnie Detweiler Obstacle Course – Nancy Osterhaus Judges - Buck Hagemann and Kelly Schutter-Ruiz Announcers – Steve and Marcia Haas Photographer – Rick O’Nan Office Manager, tireless worker, and Organizer in Chief - Sherri Meinholz

WHC – Trails Committee Awards 2020 Trail Grants

Kricket Jewett, WHC Trails Committee Co-Chair

In 1998 the Wisconsin Horse Council Trails committee started a Trail Grant Program that has since grown to more than anyone expected. Since that first year when a total of $3500 was given out in six grants to four parks including Underdown, Oconto County Forest, Ahnapee Trail and Yellowstone. The program has been beneficial to countless parks around the state since then.

Over the past 22 years the Wisconsin Horse Council – Trails Committee has awarded $391,296.00 for improvements on our trails. Each grant recipient must match the grant with at least 50% in kind amount. Just doing the math that is $586,944.00 in projects. But wait it gets better! Many of the projects that have been undertaken far exceed the 50% match, making the total nearly three quarters of a million dollars in improvements to the public equine trails in Wisconsin!

In working at the Midwest Horse Fair, we promote joining the Wisconsin Horse Council, and the most frequently asked question is – What does the Wisconsin Horse Council do for me? This nearly $550,000 is only part of the contributions from the Wisconsin Horse Council to the equine industry. However, the results quietly affect many in a positive experience on the trails.

2020 was a great year for grants committee members. We had 12 requests from 9 different groups spread throughout the state. Project requests were submitted by the following groups; Chippewa Valley Trail Riders, Thumbs Up Riders of Door County, Northern Saddle Club, La Riviere Riders (2), Friends of Governor Dodge State Park, Friends of Wildcat Mountain State Park (2), Clip Clop Trail Riders (2), Equestrian Friends of Governor Knowles, Black River Riders

We were able to satisfy all requests for the most part and look forward to seeing the finished projects. Each request was evaluated for meeting the grant requirements and all projects were discussed by the committee with concerns expressed in some areas.

The 2021 grant application will be on the Wisconsin Horse Council website soon. The deadline is February 1, 2021. Now is a great time to get out and snap some photos of proposed projects and start talking with your land managers on needs for your local parks.

Please be sure to contact the friend’s group of your local park, and see if there is anything you can do to help out! With all of the potential budget cuts, we are all going to have to step up and make sure that our trails stay in good shape for our use. Wisconsin Horse Council April Page 25
