  • NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions by Ned Hémard
NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Bonanza in the Big Easy Born in Ottawa, Canada, to Russian Jewish immigrants, this actor appeared as Monsieur Mercier in the 1958 Paramount Pictures film, The Buccaneer (which embellishes the role of Jean Lafitte (Yul Brynner) in helping Andrew Jackson (Charlton Heston) win the Battle of New Orleans. After a long and successful run in a weekly television series, this actor also reigned as Bacchus during the 1985 New Orleans Mardi Gras season. If the reader has not guessed by now, the actor mentioned above is Lorne Greene (the patriarch Ben Cartwright, star of Bonanza). The fictional setting for the show (according to the premiere episode's storyline) is a 600,000-acre ranch on the shores of Lake Tahoe known as the Ponderosa. Nestled high in the Sierra Nevada, with a large ranch house in its center, the Ponderosa spread is bigger than Don Corleone’s compound (also on Lake Tahoe), where the elaborate First Communion party scenes were filmed for The Godfather Part II. Ben Cartwright is said to have built the original, smaller homestead after moving from New Orleans with his pregnant third wife Marie de Marigny (that’s right, just like the Faubourg) and his two sons, Adam and Hoss (played by Pernell Roberts and Dan Blocker). The grown Adam designed the later sprawling ranch house as depicted on TV. The Ponderosa was roughly a two-hour ride on horseback from Virginia City, Nevada. Most people believe that the inspiration for the name Ponderosa was the great number of Ponderosa pines in the area, but it could’ve been taken from the Latin for large and ponderous in size.

  • Bonanza' Ranch Rides Into Pop Culture Sunset
Powered by SAVE THIS | EMAIL THIS | Close 'Bonanza' ranch rides into pop culture sunset INCLINE VILLAGE, Nevada (Reuters) -- A great symbol of the rugged old West, or at least as it was portrayed by Hollywood, is riding off into the sunset. The Ponderosa Ranch, an American West theme park where the television show "Bonanza" was filmed, closed Sunday after its sale to a financier whose plans for the property are unclear. The show, which ran on NBC from 1959 to 1973, was the top-rated U.S. program in the mid-1960s. Before the park closed, it was easy with a little imagination to feel transported there to a time when the American West was still a place to be tamed. Wranglers and a Stetson were proper attire. A sign outside the Silver Dollar Saloon welcomed ladies and not just the ones who earn a living upstairs. Fans of the long-running "Bonanza," which still airs on cable television, may recall Little Joe and Hoss getting the horses ready while Ben Cartwright yells from his office to see if the boys were doing what they were told in the 1860s West. "The house is the part I recognize -- the fireplace, the dining room, his office, the kitchen," said Oliver Barmann, 38, from Hessen, Germany, who visited the 570-acre grounds a week before the Ponderosa Ranch closed. "It's a pity it is closing," he said as his wife, Silvia, nodded in agreement. The property with postcard views of Lake Tahoe along Nevada's border with California became a theme park in the late 1960s, after the color-filmed scenes of "Bonanza"-- a first for a Western TV show in its day -- became part of American television lore.

  • An Interview with Dale Wasserman
An Interview with Dale Wasserman This interview took place on May 23, 1997. It was transcribed by Amy Williamsen, then reviewed and corrected by Mr. Wasserman. The original videotape is held by Television Services of Northern Arizona University. A talk by Mr. Wasserman, “Don Quixote as Theater,” was published in Cervantes, 19.1 (1999), 125–30. A just-published memoir on his early years as a hobo is “Flipping the Meat Train,” American Heritage, February 2001, 58–66. DAN EISENBERG: Good afternoon. My name is Daniel Eisenberg, of Northern Arizona University. We are honored to have here in Flagstaff and at Northern Arizona University Mr. Dale Wasserman. Welcome. DALE WASSERMAN: Thank you. DE: Mr. Wasserman is a distinguished playwright. He is still composing and having new plays produced. He is best known, perhaps, for his composition of the play One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and especially for the work that concerns us here this afternoon, which is Man of La Mancha. We’re going to have an innovative and exciting production here at Northern Arizona University beginning on June 6 [1997]. Mr. Wasserman, could you 85 86 AN INTERVIEW WITH DALE WASSERMAN Cervantes tell us something about how you came to write this play and what attracted you about the figure of Don Quixote? DW: It happened by pure accident, actually. I was in Spain writing a movie when I read in a newspaper that I was there for the purpose of researching a dramatization of Don Quixote. That was a laughing matter because, like most people on earth, I had not read Don Quixote, but Spain seemed just the right place to repair that omission.

#artbyartistico by Stan by Vlad Petruchik By Carlos Prokopenko LaCamara By Carlos Art credits for 2020-21 By Octavio Lacamara UIL Theatrical Design Ocampo Contest Poster By Christina By Juan Munoz Gastelum By Onix By Leonardo Rodriguez By Carlos Pereira Da By Dennis Cox Silva 2020-21 Theatrical Design Directorial Prompt We will produce the musical, Man of La Mancha by Dale Wasserman, Joe Darion and Mitch Leigh in a way that it has not been produced before. The original story that inspired the musical, DON QUIXOTE by Miguel de Cervantes, is considered the first novel and one of the greatest pieces of literature of all time. It has been enjoyed in over fifty languages and has inspired artists of every medium to take a turn sharing their personal reaction, interpretation, or vision of the messages, characters and moments from the story. Some famous art, some obscure…they all become a visualization of the words of the universal story of Don Quixote and his quest. Man of La Mancha is described as the first true "concept musical," the kind of musical in which the over- arching metaphor or statement is more important than the actual narrative—in which the method of storytelling is more important than the story. Playwright Dale Wasserman calls for a definite convention of theatrical production which you will follow, but you will look to artists who have captured their own vision of Don Quixote for visual inspiration. The key conventional elements Wasserman specified were as follows: 1) The entire play takes place within the prison. All the theatrics of the “charades” are created from items taken from Cervantes’ belongings and incorporated with found items from within the prison itself.
