M r. Roberts has had an extensiv e background on the stage aft er training at Arena Stage in Washington , D.C . in the early 1950's. He then went to New York , performing with the American Lyric Theatre and the Shakesp earwr ights Company . He played the lead in three Broadway productions , Tonight in Samarkand , The Lovers, and A Clearing in the Woods. Before going to Hollywood in 1956, Mr . Roberts appeared with the Brat­ tle Theatre in Cambridge , the American Shakespeare Festival in PERNELL ROBERTS (Randle P. Stratford , Connecticut , and the RESTAURANT McMurphy) achieved national P.hoenix Theatre in New York . His recognition during his six years on first feature film , Desire Under the the Bonanza television series.
