Towards the end of the 19th century the transition to Modern Art took its course also in Denmark. It involved the end of the grand narratives and an orientation towards simple, real life. The spectrum of the show ranges from the pioneers of the Golden Age to representatives of the National Romantic style, all the way to the prominent Symbolist Vilhelm Hammershøi.

Since 1869 the uniquely comprehensive collec- tion, developed from the beginning by the citizens of Hamburg, has been open to the public at the heart of the city. The joint effort has resulted in one of the most important museums in Germany. In the anniversary year, we will direct our attention to the museum and its col- lection from diversified and sometimes unusual perspectives: with many inter- ventions in the collection, discussions, the participation of our audience and, not least, a big birthday party. The great artists Giambattista Tiepolo, Fragonard, François Boucher, Joshua Reynolds and Goya responded to the ideological, political and societal changes of the 18th century with their art. They revolutionized painting by redefining artistic standards and breaking with conventions in an equally innovative and provocative manner. Based on these fundamental changes, they created the foundations of Modernism in the great artistic centres of Venice, Paris, London, Hamburg and Madrid. You would like to learn more about the art we are showing? Then why not come along on one of our many guided tours? Or simply lead your own group through the museum!
