L’Anses contribue principalement à assurer la sécurité sanitaire dans les domaines de l’environnement, du travail et de l’alimentation et à évaluer les risques sanitaires qu’ils peuvent comporter. Elle contribue également à assurer d’une part la protection de la santé et du bien-être des animaux et de la santé des végétaux et d’autre part l’évaluation des propriétés nutritionnelles des aliments. Elle fournit aux autorités compétentes toutes les informations sur ces risques ainsi que l’expertise et l’appui scientifique technique nécessaires à l’élaboration des dispositions législatives et réglementaires et à la mise en œuvre des mesures de gestion du risque (article L.1313-1 du code de la santé publique). Ses avis sont rendus publics. L’Anses a été saisie le 15 mars 2012 par la Direction Générale de l’Alimentation du ministère en charge de l’agriculture d’une demande d’analyse de risque phytosanitaire (ARP) sur le nématode des tiges et bulbes (Ditylenchus dipsaci) sur luzerne (Medicago sativa). -

Most flowering plants have been shown to be ancient polyploids that have undergone one or more rounds of WGDs early in their evolution, and many lineages have since undergone additional, independent and more recent genome duplications. It was suggested that the paleopolyploidy events were crucial to the radiation and success of angiosperms, but evidence for proposed ancient genome duplications remains equivocal. We explored from the lowlands to the high mountains, in weather that varied from warm and humid, to very hot and dry, but with little rain apart from one thundery night. In total the week produced some 109 species of butterfly, together with many dazzling day-flying moths (particularly burnets) and other wonderful bugs and beasties. Nightly moth trapping in the garden gave us a window into the night-life, albeit dominated by Pine Processionaries, but with a good sample of the big, beautiful and bizarre. Add in to the mix the stunning scenery, a range of mountain birds, a few mammals and reptiles, and wonderful food, drink and accommodation at Casa Sarasa: the perfect recipe for an outstanding holiday! Day 1 Wednesday 4th July After flying from the UK, we arrived at Zaragoza Airport, met Peter, and boarded the minibuses to drive to Casa Sarasa in Berdún. -

Appendix 1 Center for Plant Conservation Best Reintroduction Practice Guidelines Joyce Maschinski, Matthew A. Albrecht, Leonie Monks, and Kristin E. Haskins The ultimate goal of rare plant conservation is to ensure that unique taxa experi- ence continued evolution in a natural context. Over the past 20 years conservation officers working with the Center for Plant Conservation (CPC) have conducted plant reintroductions of many species in many habitats. In this appendix we pro- vide our CPC Best Reintroduction Practice Guidelines, which refine reintroduc- tion planning based on a review of past protocols, the experience of CPC practi- tioners, findings presented in this volume, and comments from conference attendees. The science and practice of rare plant reintroduction are expanding, and these guidelines represent the state of the art. Our goal is to provide a quick reference for practitioners to use when planning and executing rare plant reintroductions (fig. A1.1). The term reintroduction in this appendix implies any attempt to introduce propagules to an unoccupied patch, including augmentations, introductions, and translocations. Managed re- locations would require following these same guidelines in addition to the points presented by Haskins and Keel (this volume) and the modeling, interdisciplinary, multiagency, and potentially international collaborations cautioned by Kennedy and colleagues (this volume). The sections are intended to help practitioners do the following: justify the decision to conduct a reintroduction; prepare the re- introduction design with legal, funding, species biology, horticulture, and recipi- ent site considerations in mind; implement the reintroduction; conduct project aftercare; and design monitoring to document long-term establishment of the rare population. All phases of the reintroduction process should include opportunities for public involvement. -

A number of rare vascular plants are included in the notification of the SSSI; prior to 2008 the vascular plant interest had not been formally assessed using Common Standards Monitoring guidance. Natural England therefore commissioned an assessment of the species of interest based on review of known recent baseline data, desk-based research and targeted fieldwork. The results of work are intended to underpin the Condition Assessment by supplementing information gleaned from past surveys and recording. Ten nationally scarce and rare plants, and one regionally rare plant at the southern edge of its range (Astragalus), are mentioned on the Citation and are at the centre of the assessment (Table 1). One of these is considered individually notified; the other ten are part of an assemblage. An Ecological Database of the British Flora
An Ecological Database of the British Flora submitted by Helen Jacqueline Peat for examination for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Department of Biology University of York October 1992 Abstract The design and compilation of a database containing ecological information on the British Flora is described. All native and naturalised species of the Gymnospermae and Angiospermae are included. Data on c.130 characteristics concerning habitat, distribution, morphology, physiology, life history and associated organisms, were collected by both literature searching and correspondence with plant ecologists. The evolutionary history of 25 of the characteristics was investigated by looking at the amount of variance at each taxonomic level. The variation in pollination mechanisms was found at high taxonomic levels suggesting these evolved, and became fixed, early on in the evolution of flowering plants. Chromosome number, annualness, dichogamy and self-fertilization showed most variance at low taxonomic levels, suggesting these characteristics have evolved more recently and may still be subject to change. Most of the characteristics, however, eg. presence of compound leaves, height and propagule length showed variance spread over several taxonomic levels suggesting evolution has occurred at different times in different lineages. The necessity of accounting for phylogeny when conducting comparative analyses is discussed, and two methods allowing this are outlined. Using these, the questions: 'Why does stomatal distribution differ between species?' and 'Why do different species have different degrees of mycorrhizal infection?' were investigated. Amphistomaty was found to be associated with species of unshaded habitats, those with small leaves and those with hairy leaves, and hypostomaty with woody species, larger leaves and glabrous leaves. -

Esteban Hernández Bermejo1*, Gustavo Delucchi2, Gustavo Charra2, María Lelia Pochettino2,3, Julio Alberto Hurrell2,3* ABSTRACT “Thistles” constitute a group of prickly herbaceous plants included in tribe Cardueae (Asteraceae), but in the popular sense that concept is frequently applied to other species of the same family, as well as to some Dipsacaceae, Bromeliaceae, Apiaceae or Cactaceae. Since antiquity, the cultivation and use of thistles for food and medicinal purposes have been well known in the Mediterranean cultures. The different popular knowledge could allow us to refer to a “thistle culture”. During the exploration of America, many of those species and their associated knowledge were transferred from the Old to the New World. In Argentina, several species of thistles, especially Cynara cardunculus, spread extensively throughout the pampas. From early times, they constituted a source of food and lowquality fuel, and in several cases, they were also employed in popular medicine, with diverse uses, some of which are still in practice. The local importance of some species is mentioned in literature, arts, and gastronomy. In the 20th century, a large production of artichokes from introduced crops that increased local agrodiversity was recorded in Argentina. This contribution summarizes some aspects of the transfer and resignification of the thistle from the Iberian Peninsula to Argentina.
