Brothers and Sisters,

Last week we le the Gospel of Mark so that we might spend some me reflecng on John’s Jesus and the “Bread of Life Discourse.” Today begins the Discourse and the explanaons of the feeding of the multudes that was proclaimed last Sunday. As we go through life, most of us spend a lot of me, money, energy and other resources on passing things. Maybe we place great value on a career, or educaon, a house, or being a sports champion. However, as we go through life, these values usually wear out or become meaningless. We outgrow them and replace them with more meaningful values like family, friends and faith. In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges his followers to a deeper conversaon. He has just finished performing the miracle of feed- ing the large multude with five barley loaves and two fish. The crowds followed him not because they wish to grow in faith and spirituality, but because they see Jesus as a source of physical bread. It was common pracce that a true prophet would lend credibility to himself and his message by demonstrang a sign. The people want Jesus to show them ’ sign—Manna, bread come down from heaven. We should not forget, this is one in the same audience who, on the day before, were beneficiaries of Jesus’s mulplicaon of the loaves and fishes. Something else we should remember, this was Passover me, the feast of Unleavened Bread, a me of year for remembering the exodus from , when Moses fed their ancestors with manna in the desert, so perhaps the people were asking them- selves could Jesus be another Moses? The people failed to see the spiritual reality in Jesus‘ miracle. Jesus warned the crowd that they are thinking wrongly—running to see him for perishable bread (John, 6:26). Jesus, the teacher (Rabbi), remind them that it was not Moses who fed the people manna in the wilderness. Jesus says, bread that is truly life-giving can only come from God. So the people say to him, “Sir give us the bread always. “Jesus says to them in reply, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” As we said early on, some of us place great value on things that wear out or become meaningless. Perhaps when these things are gone we can feel empty inside or dissasfied. In our second reading Saint Paul would call these things of great value “illusory desires.” The real truth however, is that nothing will ever fill that empness except the kind of nourishment which comes from God. Many people sll have to work extremely hard to provide for themselves and their families. Jesus urges us today to work for our spiritual well-being as well as for food that rejuvenates our inner being. Faith is a primary theme for today’s gospel. Physical hunger and thirst made the Jewish people rely on God in the desert. Je- sus shows the crowd, and us, that hunger has much deeper implicaons for the soul. If we believe Christ is food and drink, we will never hunger or thirst.

—Miguel Arias, Copyright © J.
