The sculptures represent figures and stories of popular saints taken from the history of art. They are made from cast representations of details taken from National Gallery paintings, which have been combined with assemblages of recycled machinery, broken children’s toys and other unwanted junk. In the foyer to the exhibition, a selection of related drawings and collages is displayed. The collages are made from fragments cut out from reproductions of paintings in the collection. THE ROOTSTEIN HOPKINS ASSOCIATE ARTIST SCHEME The National Gallery is a historical collection that ends with work by Cézanne and the Post-Impressionists. At the time of the Gallery’s foundation in 1824, one of the stated aims was that it should provide a resource from which contemporary artists could learn and gain inspiration. Taking its cue from this idea, the Associate Artist Scheme began in 1989 with the appointment of Paula Rego. The essential requirement for the Associate Artist is that he or she makes new work by engaging with, and responding to the collection or some aspect of the collection. The artist is given a studio in the Gallery for a period of around two years. Michael Landy is the ninth artist to be invited to undertake this project.

    FOURTEEN HOLY HELPERS (F.D. AUGUST 8) (As used by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russian, Western Rite Vicariate) A group of saints invoked with special confidence because they have proven themselves efficacious helpers in adversity and difficulties, are known and venerated under the name Fourteen Holy Helpers. Devotion to these fourteen as a group spread in response to the Black Plague which devastated Europe from 1346 to 1349. Among its symptoms were the tongue turning black, a parched throat, violent headache, fever, and boils on the abdomen. It attacked without warning, robbed its victims of reason, and killed within a few hours; many died without the last Sacraments. Brigands roamed the roads, people suspected of contagion were attacked, animals died, people starved, whole villages vanished into the grave, social order and family ties broke down, and the disease appeared incurable. The pious turned to heaven, begging the intervention of the saints, praying to be spared or cured. This group devotion began in Germany. The names of the fourteen Saints varied from place to place, but the primary principle of their selection was the efficacy of their intercession against various diseases—most, but not all, were venerated as Martyrs. Typically named are the following Saints: Achatius (Agathius), Barbara, Blaise, Catherine of Alexandria, Christopher, Cyriacus, Dionysius (Denys), Erasmus (Elmo) of Formia, Eustace (Eustathius), George, Giles, Margaret of Antioch, Panteleimon, & Vitus. For one or other of the above were sometimes named Saints Anthony the Great, Leonard, Nicholas, or Sebastian. Sts. Christopher and Giles were invoked against the plague itself.     UNLOCKING CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL: FAMILY RESOURCES A VIRTUAL VISIT ONLINE Saint Catherine of Alexandria Christ Church has two windows dedicated to Saint Catherine Introduction: Catherine lived in the early 4th Century. She was the daughter of Constus, the Governor of Alexandria, a big city and port in Egypt. The Emperor at the time was Maximius and he was tolerant of Christians like Catherine. But the next Emperor (Maxentius) wasn’t kind at all and put people to death if they disagreed with him (Christians, for example). Catherine confronted Emperor Maxentius, so he summoned fifty of his cleverest advisers, philosophers and courtiers to argue against her. Despite her young age, Catherine was very eloquent and used logic so skilfully, the clever men lost every argument. She was so persuasive, many of them even became Christians. So, the Emperor had them all put to death. The story tells how the Emperor had Catherine whipped, but she showed no sign of pain. She was then put in prison, where angels healed her wounds. The Emperor tried starving her to death, but a dove came from Heaven and fed her. Jesus himself came to visit her and encouraged her to fight on, promising her a crown of everlasting glory. Over two hundred people visited Catherine in prison, and all of them converted to Christianity - so Emperor Maxantius had them all put to death as well (including his own wife, Valeria). With his first wife out of the way, Maxantius tried another approach – he asked Catherine to marry him, but she refused. He then tried crushing Catherine under a wheel, but she just touched it lightly and it shattered.

    St Catherine of Alexandria – the legendary saint By Tom Watson Tom is a Trustee of the Friends of Winchester Cathedral and Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Media & Communication at Bournemouth University Within Winchester Cathedral, there are at least three representations of St Catherine of Alexandria. There is an image in the Holy Sepulchre Chapel, a stained glass panel in the Joys of Mary series in the North Presbytery Aisle and a minor statue in the Great Screen. Outside and about a mile away, to the south east, is St Catherine’s Hill where the settlement of Winchester may have started in the Iron Age. In this article, the story of this very popular saint of the Middle Ages will be explored along with the varied indicators of her popularity. In England, there are 70 churches with dedications to St Catherine ranging from Ventnor on the Isle Wight in the central south to New Brancepeth, near Durham, in the north east. The closest dedication to the Cathedral is only three miles distant at St Catherine of Alexandria church, Littleton. As well, 170 medieval bells, which are controlled by a wheel, were dedicated to her. [1] Not only was St Catherine a popular saint in English church dedications, but the names Catherine, Katherine, Caterina and Catalina were also popular names of other saints. At last count, including a Korean woman, Saint Catherine Chong Ch’oryom (d.1846), sanctified in 1984 by Pope John Paul II, there are 11 saints with these names and another three with Blessed or beatified status.
