Berwick Bassett 1900-1949 Family Notices Births Engagements Deaths Marriages Berwick Bassett Birthdays Anniversaries 1900-1949 FUNERAL NOTICES 1903 December 23, 1903, at the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Zanzibar, Alexander Cichele Grant, Forest Dept., East Africa Protectorate, son of Mr. Trevor John Cichele Grant, late of ICS, to Charlotte Lucy, daughter of Rev. E. Anderson, MA., vicar of Berwick Bassett-cum-Winterbourne Monkton, Wilts. North Wilts Herald, 20 February 1903 1924 The death occurred at 5, Prior Park Buildings, on Tuesday, of the Rev Ebenezer Anderson, at the age of 91. Educated at Worcester College, Oxford, he received his BA degree in 1855 and MA in 1872. In 1857 he became curate of St Andrew's, Worcester, and held the curacy of Frankley Worcester, where he later became rector. In 1865 he became curate of Stapleford Abbotts, Essex, and three years later rector of Manston, Dorset, and subsequently in 1872 of Avon-Dassetts, Warwickshire. For four years he was secretary to the Additional Curates' Society in various dioceses, and from 1884 to 1886 he was curate of Cranborne, Dorset. In the latter year he became vicar of Berwick Bassett with Winterbourne Monkton, Wilts, remaining there till 1905. Subsequently Mr. Anderson came to live at Bath, where in December 1922, he celebrated his diamond wedding. His widow, aged 91, three sons and three daughters, survive him. Peter C. West, of Berwick Bassett, Wilts, and grandson of the late Rev, Lewis Benatus West, of East Tytherton, Wilts; also on June 6. 1932, at Avalon, Devizes, Wiltshire, England, Sarah, wife of the above; aged 86 years; beloved parents of Mrs. Walter Buckeridge, 6 Avoca, Adelaide Terrace. Unknown Australian Newspaper The death has occurred at his residence Avalon, Bath Road, Devizes, of Mr. Henry Brownlee West (89) son of the late Rev Peter C. West, of Berwick Bassett.     Post Office Directory Extract 1875 Berwick Bassett Berwick Bassett (or Barwick Bassett) is a township and parish, in the Northern division of the county, Calne hundred, Marlborough union and county court district, diocese of Salisbury, archdeaconry of Wilts, and rural deanery of Avebury, 9 miles north-west from Marlborough, and 7 south from Wootton Bassett station. The church of St. Nicholas is a stone structure, in the Early English style, has been repaired and re-seated, the chancel and cupola with 3 bells, being entirely new; in the eat window is some stained glass; here is also a very ancient font, and handsome carved oak rood-screen. The register dates from 1674. The living is a vicarage, united with Winterbourne Monkton, yearly value £300, in the gift of the Bishop of Salisbury, and held by the Rev. William Philip Strong Bingham, M.A., of Christ Church, Oxford. There is a National school. The trustees of Sir Henry Meux, bart., who are lords of the manor, and Lady Holland, are the principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats and beans.
