A WONDERFUL HARVEST What a superb year it has been! A glorious summer, even lasting to the end of September, culminating in a harvest safely brought home and celebrated with a Harvest Supper organised by Jenni Moseling and her many helpers. Thank you to all who contributed in any way. Our village church was once again beautifully decorated with flowers and produce to celebrate this special time of year. Particular thanks go to all who came along and helped with this and to John and Joy Hussey for making the Harvest sheaves. Local gardens were raided; Dahlias and flowers of the season were generously given by many. Thank you to all.

White Horse Cricket Club – the season finale Those of you who follow the Chinese Zodiac will know that 2014 is the Year of the Horse. So it proved for White Horse Cricket Club, after we celebrated becoming Champions of Wiltshire League Division 5 in late August. The final round of games saw us beat Spye Park at home in Broad Hinton whilst table- toppers Goatacre 3s “fluffed their lines” (source: Wiltshire Gazette and Herald) by losing to Chippenham 3s. Thus after some phone calls from sources close to Goatacre CC, and the wonders of Twitter, it was confirmed later that evening that we had won the league. It seemed appropriate that local boy Jon Candy won the league with a huge six – if you see him around Broad Hinton this winter, he won’t be afraid to tell you the fact! So 2014 proved a great season for all who contributed on and off the field of play. Broad Hinton, and the surrounding villages, have supplied many of the players this season and we would love to welcome more local talent to the club in 2015.

HAPPY HOURS CLUB We meet on the first Wednesday of each month. We sometimes are in the village hall for entertainment, lunch or tea or with friends invited from other OAP groups. The occasional pub lunch is always popular. Anyone wishing to join Broad Hinton Happy Hours will be warmly welcomed. Subs are £8. per year and our programme is varied. If you would like to know more then please contact Penny Brewer on Broad Hinton 731366. To finish the year we are being entertained by the Serendipity hand bell ringers in November and in December we will have our Christmas lunch at the Barbury Inn. A new programme will be available in December. We have had a lovely year and would like to mention some special times. In March we had a super lunch with Claire and John at their beautiful home at Richardson. Watching, at very close quarters, the various birds that visit the garden was just lovely. Everyone enjoyed Claire's company, spending time chatting and catching up. It was lovely that John was able to be at home. In August we were invited to Lynn's home in Easton Royal where we enjoyed a scrumptious tea. Afterwards we walked around the garden and then said hello to the goats, cows, chickens, pigs and the Donkey. The friendly goats were a firm favourite. October is when we have our AGM and this year we were able to have it at the home of Marlene and Russell at Elcombe Hall. After formalities we were treated to a splendid tea in the Orangery which afforded us a view of the wonderful garden and a very comfortable afternoon. Marlene brought the dogs in later and they were good fun. Thanks go to them all. We would all like to thank Penny for giving her time to run the Happy Hours Club. Tony Crotty.

SAVE OUR SHOP

Many of you will have seen the “business for sale” sign on the village shop. Several villages (including ) have opted to run their village shop as a community concern – this is an option for our shop and Post Office. A public meeting is being held in the Village Hall on Wednesday November 26th at 7.30pm to hear views.

If you are interested in the future of the village shop and Post Office, please come along to share your opinions. Understanding what Broad Hinton needs is key to the success of any community initiative. In addition, it is vital that we learn how much support there would be from people in the community to both run and use the shop and Post Office.

If the response is limited then it will not happen! A successful village shop and Post Office is more than just a retail outlet.

If you cannot make this date and time but would like to express your view please contact Desmond Clarke via email: [email protected] or by telephone: 01793 731606

Do you need a Guitarist or A Piper for your wedding reception, funeral wake or any other social event or celebration?

Adam Hearn has been playing guitar for over 30 years and was a key player in the Summer Solstice Open mic Night in Church at Avebury. He started learning as a child in Spain and has continued developing his passion for classical, flamenco and folk guitar styles. In recent years Adam has performed at weddings and events all over the world. His performances include playing and singing a variety of pieces such as Pachelbel’s Canon in D, Schubert’s Ave Maria, and Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, and are decided beforehand with the bride and groom. Packages are tailored to each event and a typical package would include a total of 90 minutes of music, with a choice of several pieces to be played during the ceremony and some to be played during the reception. For more information contact Adam on [email protected] or 07875 505634.

Piper Tony Hurst was a God-send. He became involved in the Commemoration of Outbreak of War service at St James, Avebury, at the last minute, stepping up to help in an emergency, and was a real asset to the Church. A traditional highland piper will always add that special touch to an event. With several years experience piping, mentored by former Scots Guards Pipe Major (Dixie) Ingram, Tony has recently been appointed Honorary Piper to the Swindon & District Caledonian Society and the Warrant Officers’ & Sergeants’ Mess, The Defence Academy of the in Wiltshire. He has also piped for:

● The Rt Hon David Cameron MP ● Lt Gen Sir John Kiszely KCB MC (Scots Guards) on retirement ● The Joint Service Staff and Command College, Shrivenham ● Malmesbury Abbey ● Various military functions

Tony lives near Swindon but will travel anywhere to offer services for weddings, birthdays, special occasions, New Year Burns suppers, corporate events/openings, funerals. Travel costs are very fair. Tony also provides a full military or mini band of Highland Pipes and Drums as required.

Contact Tony on 01793 780217 or 07877 836871 or his website www.wiltshirepiper.co.uk

Page 18 LOCAL NEWS November 2014 View from the Road to Lindisfarne

It's hard to quantify what it is that you feel you are leaving behind when you prepare to walk out on a pilgrimage. All I know is that you have to let go. The rather abrupt release of our daily rituals that we feel keep us safe; the certain way that we rise, wash, work, socialise, eat, sleep and communicate; all our daily habits that become our daily rituals; our means of survival in our worlds and communities - that well- trodden path of comfort is abandoned for the unknown. Satish Kumar says "I walk to regain my spirit" and this I can relate to. The slow defining of who I truly am and what I truly want becomes silenced by too much activity, people and noise.

As I sit in the North transept in the comfort of this beautiful Abbey café I spy, above the tree-like pillars of the main aisle, "the box". I am reminded of Martin Palmer’s talk and how many of these pilgrims would have been rather dishevelled types. This perfectly crafted stone box high on the south transept housed a monk to watch over the pilgrims whilst they slept. The guardian of the pilgrims’ souls? - more likely ensuring the safety of the relics! I feel like nicking the pamphlet on the Abbey, but I don't in case there's a monk in there watching! We have been welcomed as known pilgrims - I wonder if the welcome would extend so generously to the stranger?

Something else springs to mind - this is not an easy walk for women. Any women walking would have been toughened by the road and probably would have needed to cultivate a good left hook to keep themself safe. I'm astonished how much easier it is for Matt, Phil and Gerald the Bull...

The second day I began to burn. By the time 6.30 arrived I thought I had been burned from the inside out and was in excruciating pain. As I sit beneath this watch box seeking refuge and comfort, I realise how important the slightest smile or gestures of hospitality would have been to these pilgrims. How deep the physical burn is after 25 miles, Matt must be made of iron.

I also realise that it's not in the walking but in the resting we hear our God or Great Spirit. He/she/it/unknown is not in the object you are walking to, but rests within these liminal spaces of peace, momentarily felt in a breath of wind that rustles the trees, in the play of a foal, in the hearts of the souls we encounter on our journey. I wonder if I should leave a mark? Take out a dagger and carve the walls…

My question is: are many of us too busy to hear God? Are we too busy to receive possibly one of the first walking pilgrims in over 500 years? Are we too busy rushing to the next thing to connect with God? Could we hear if called or are we too busy? Am I closer to God, Goddess or Great Spirit? Undoubtedly. Is it worth the psychological difficulty and physical pain? Yes.

Thank you Claire for your warmth & blessing, Glynis for the mega week long picnic bundle (Matt is still eating it!) (as we are at the rectory), Gerald for the strong lead that nearly killed me! Martin & Clare for the dream shower…Phil for the gentleness.

Much love to all.

Pilgrim Petra

Finally this was on the menu in the Abbey Café: Don't forget to entertain strangers; by doing so some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Hebrews 13:2
