We would like to give you more of what you value in the local news, please let us know what you enjoy and would like to see more of. We would welcome more of your lockdown stories, or indeed some non-lockdown stories. Perhaps you can save us up some stories of how you ‘did Christmas’ this year—it is likely to be different for many of us. Let us hope it can still be as enjoyable.

Our house has been blessed with the addition of my daughter and her husband, visiting from , bringing with them baby Freddie. It is a privilege to be able to share some of these early weeks, not one I expected, and a true Lockdown bonus.

The team would like to be able to send you an electronic version of the Local News directly to your inbox as a pdf in the near future. If you would like to be on the list to receive this please get in touch with Liz Moakes at the email at the bottom of the first page to indicate your interest. HENRY SMITH CHARITY

Unfortunately the latest Lock Down means that the Christmas payments from the Henry Smith Charity will be delivered late this year. We will deliver them as soon as we can.

The Trustees

The census is taking place in March 2021.

It’s a survey that happens every 10 years and gives us a picture of all the people and households in and Wales. It helps plan and fund public services, like transport, education and healthcare.

By taking part and encouraging others to do the same, you’ll help make sure you and your community get the services you need. Nearer the time, you’ll receive more information. There’ll be plenty of help to take part for people who need it.

BROAD HINTON AND WINTERBOURNE BASSETT PARISH COUNCIL CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT

Parish Council meeting held on 3rd November, 2020. We welcomed Damian Le Gresley who has been be co-opted to join the Council, a vote which was passed unanimously. The Parish Council agreed to move over to a new Microsoft Office 365 set up, which will streamline our systems and bring us up to date, including the use of a more se- cure Microsoft Teams instead of Zoom. The Council agreed unanimously to this change over, which will come in effect as soon as possible. The Parish Council has continued to progress of the issues on the A4361 and Uffcott/ Earthline, significant progression has already been made and we are waiting for an update Planning Enforcement on action against Earthline. We confirmed the roles and responsibilities of all Councillors. Although we already have a good handle on our permanent overheads it was agreed that we need to be more ambitious in our thinking. We need to set a number of priorities and ensure that these were achieved over the year. We discussed that in comparison with other Councils our Precept is small and also the percentage of Council Tax which relates to the Parish Council is very small. We discussed the possibility of raising funds else- where and It was agreed that a special meeting will be held where projects would be considered, and a list agreed for next year. All councillors were encouraged to think about possible projects and funding ideas for next year. This together with the per- manent overheads would form part of the basis for the Precept for next year. As we are now in a second lockdown, a new set of procedures had been received from Council. The Wellbeing Hub has re-opened, with signposts to the rele- vant organisations to help those in need. We were delighted to receive a kind letter from the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire thanking the council and the community for all their hard work during the time of the pandemic, this shows how appreciated the local support is, which has been given to our Parish by our residents. It’s reassuring that all groups in the Parish are now following the Government guide- lines and if we keep aware of the most vulnerable and recognise mental health is- sues by keeping an eye on our friends and neighbours, we’ll get through this difficult time together. Alex LaRoche Chairman, Broad Hinton and Winterbourne Bassett Parish Council The full minutes to our September meeting is available on the BHcommunity website at http:// www.broadhinton.org.uk/parish-council/minutes-agendas If you require hard copies of our meetings or need help, please contact our Clerk, Peter Barry on 07860 407585.

7 The Broad Hinton, Uffcott and Winterbourne Bassett Local News December 2020 VILLAGE HALL DECEMBER NEWS

BHVH Closed As I write of course, BHVH is closed for lockdown, who knows what will happen on the 2nd December, after the Local News has been delivered. Maybe we’ll be able to open our doors again in January. In the meantime, the trustees are going into the hall individually, to make sure it’s kept clean and smart.

Cleaning BHVH We need a new cleaner from January for approximately 3-4 hours a week, with extra monthly jobs on top of that. We’re happy to consider an individual or a company. Cleaning is mainly done during the daytime, on Saturdays and a week-day, but flexibility is important to be able to work around when the hall is hired. We have a clear schedule of what is required and will be asking those interested to quote to that schedule. If you’re interested, please get in touch with Marilyn Martin [email protected] 01793 731521 Post Office in BHVH Even though we’re closed for everything else, the Post Office is still open in BHVH every Tuesday morning 9am – noon. Tina has Christmas stamps available.

Updates to our website We spend quite a bit of time maintaining and adding to the BHVH website, which as most of you know, functions as a website for the three villages generally. If you know of pages which would benefit from an update, please let us know, by emailing Kate Marshall [email protected]. We can keep www.broadhinton.org.uk up to date and relevant if you keep us informed.

Aim: ‘A Love of Learning for a Lifetime of Opportunities’ We welcome everyone to our village school where all faiths, cultures and abilities are received with love, care and respect. www.broadhintonschool.org

We are looking forward to Term 2, a long, but busy term leading up to our Christmas. This year will be different due to COVID restrictions and thus I will be speaking to Maria, our vicar, about the new restrictions for church services. More details will follow once a decision has been made. Please remain patient with me as decisions are being made on the constant changing of restrictions due to COVID. We are trying to keep schooling as normal as possible for your child, so please contact us if you have concerns you wish to discuss. It is lovely to see and hear children enjoying themselves in school, smiling constantly, laughing and having fun whilst learning. During the first term it has been our aim as teachers and teaching staff to build the first relationships with our new children in our class and conduct well-being sessions to aid the return to school after a long period of time at home. Setting high expectations of work and behaviour by all, it is a time to reflect on their abilities, assess targets and begin to move them forward to new and exciting challenges. All the staff have been very impressed with how the children have settled, especially the reception children. Thank you to all parents for your support at home and school in order that your child gains the most out of their education with us at Broad Hinton School. Your support is very much appreciated by the staff and by me.

The theme of Collective Worship this term is: Compassion

Admissions The application forms for Wiltshire schools are now available at primary schools, secondary schools and County Hall, or you can apply online at www.wiltshire.gov.uk. Deadlines for applications are as follows. Primary school places – noon on 15th January 2021. All forms must be returned to the School Admissions Team at County Hall, Trowbridge. If you have any problems don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Keen.

Governor news Dear Parents, Welcome to the first Governor’s newsletter of Broad Hinton Church of England Primary School. Having successfully reached the October half term in a very challenging environment we just wanted to thank all the teachers, parents, pupils and villagers for the extraordinary community spirit they have shown in this tough time. We would also like to say particular thank you to both Reverend Maria Shepherdson whose many efforts including zoom church services and Facebook collective worship videos offered wise words and time to reflect in the face of a crisis and the Friends of Broad Hinton School; who are coming up with

12 The Broad Hinton, Uffcott and Winterbourne Bassett Local News December 2020 some fantastic ideas to help raise funds for the benefit of all school pupils despite the constraints. At our recent full governors meeting, it’s been so nice to hear that the children have settled in well to the new arrangements and that the teachers have adapted smoothly to teaching under the new restrictions. This is in no small part due to the staff and governor’s time spent planning and risk assessing before the start of this academic school year. As part of this planning, we made sure that initiatives like the governments catch-up premium funding would benefit pupils in the best manner possible and that every child would be individually assessed to help target booster work more effectively. We are also very fortunate to now have access to programs like Classroom Secrets Kids, times Table Rockstars/ Numbots, Seesaw and DBPrimary, which enable you to have easier direct communication with your child’s teacher, as well as being able to access structured learning at the right difficulty level from home. This could also play an important part in the continuation of teaching in any further lock downs, so please familiarise yourself with the programs or ask for support, as we do not want any child being at a disadvantage. The parent governors are also fully aware of the commitment and dedication of the staff and consequently decided that, in order for them to gain some well-being and family time, teachers and the headteacher will not be answering messages at the weekends and will attempt to reply at the earliest possible moment in the week. Another big problem of being in lockdown for so long was the lack of social interactions and outdoor activities, so, despite the many restrictions imposed, it has been very heartening to see the children together and having fun outside with the H5 adventure days each year participated in this term. The photos of them playing team games and working in groups to start fires were lovely to see on the weekly celebration montages and please send in pictures of your children doing interesting activities over the half term holiday and at weekends. Lastly, as governors, our mission is to support the school in ensuring that it continues to provide the best education and life chances for all our children and which is best summarised in our school motto ‘A love of learning for a lifetime of opportunities’. To achieve this, we need to work in partnership with you as parents and staff to make sure that every child reaches their full potential, so if you have any concerns or issues, please share them with us. We look forward to hearing from you during the school year as we continue to work closely with Mrs Floyd and her staff to make Broad Hinton Church of England a happy, safe, structured Christian environment.

Eileen Diana Young 11th September 1922 - 25th October 2020 Diana was born in Froyle ,Hampshire but spent her early years as a small child in India with her parents; her father was a Colonel with the 54th Sikhs Regiment. Later, like so many children at that time, she returned to Britain where she attended a boarding school in Sussex and spent holidays with her grandparents or close friends of the family. Diana trained as a secretary on leaving school and worked during the war years in the War office; at the end of the war she accompanied her section to Berlin, the second official British servicewoman to do so.Her experiences of that war torn city and the ongoing suffering of people while the allies worked together to try to bring stability, was to make a considerable impact on a young woman still in her early twenties. Malcolm had been a prisoner of war for four years in Germany; he and Diana were married in 1946 and set off to Annan in Scotland to begin their married life with hope and optimism after the trauma of war. There, Malcolm worked hard to revitalise the shrimping industry where Youngs had a factory. Peter and Richard were born soon after. Diana also helped at the factory when she could; but one day, in a hurry to get there she caught the bumper of the old Austin 7 in the large wheel of an old fashioned pram which was being rocked gently to and fro to help the baby sleep while the mother chatted to her neighbour. Off bounced the pram down the cobbled street, with Diana oblivious, the baby probably delighted at the new rocking sensation, and the mother shouting “She has stolen my bairn!” All ended safely and happily; the baby was returned to its mother! Diana and Malcolm Young bought Whyr Farm on 29th September 1970; they had been looking for an arable farm in Wiltshire. One became available in West Knoyle, but it adjoined the A303. Whyr Farm was the next one to become available and was more suitable, even if higher in altitude. They had much to learn about farming the land but were given great support and encouragement from neighbouring farmers, who became good friends over the years; they were also very fortunate in their loyal and knowledgeable farm manager John Foxwell and his wife Judy. Diana and Malcolm quickly engaged in many local community activities. She was secretary to the Winterbourne Bassett PCC for many years. I can recall her typing in the kitchen on a portable typewriter; no i pads or laptops then! She was always a very keen volunteer at the biannual Winterbourne Bassett church and village fete, working closely with Elspeth Bowman. In addition Diana participated in organising the teas for the Happy Hours club often held in Broad Hinton village hall; however in summer the tea parties were sometimes held in the gardens of local homes and I do remember preparing for one such occasion at Whyr. There were many interesting times as in 1976, when, after 2 dry winters, the well at Whyr almost ran dry which caused trouble with the supply of water to the farmhouse and the three cottages. Diana had ridden horses as a youngster and soon bought a horse, Jupiter; she would ride often with Marilyn Horton and Sheila Huddy. She also had a share in a racehorse and had great fun attending race meetings all over the country. Together with her good friend Jill Yates she became an enthusiastic member of Nadfas . And Marilyn Horton can recall days out with Diana and Jill where they would head out for a pub lunch enjoying plenty of chatter and laughter. A marvellous and supportive wife, she backed Malcolm in his Action on Smoking Campaign, shared his enthusiasm for history and travel when he founded the International Map Collectors’ Society, and was renowned for her famous stews after a day of a friendly shoot at Whyr. She felt this was the only dish she could cook well! But she did make a good Christmas cake heavily laced with brandy! Diana decided to move to Highfield Residential Home in Marlborough in 2013, where she resided happily for seven years. She celebrated her 98th birthday this year. Always keen on current affairs and a keen observer of life and people to the last she was however disturbed by the Covid ‘19 outbreak and the constraints on visiting family and friends ,especially not being able to have a visit from her elder son Peter and his wife Annie, who live in Sydney. She died peacefully, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and mother-in-law.

St Peter Ad Vincula, Auction of Promises 2020

Amazing, Brilliant, Charitable…thank you to everyone that took part in the Silent Auc- tion. We received more than 120 bids over the month of the Auction. For obvious rea- sons, 2020 has proved uniquely difficult to fundraise. While other events have not been possible (e.g. Village Fete), the Auction has helped immensely to raise funds for our church. Congratulations to those whose bids were successful (and get to enjoy the food, experience or adventure that awaits), and commiserations to those who missed out this year (and don’t need to cough up the pennies!).

We have raised a very impressive… £2,545.01!!!

A View from the Rectory

th Today is the 16 of November and the deadline for the Christmas editions of our local news is upon me. On the radio I have just heard a live interview with a Mum who took her child to ‘see Santa’- at a social distance, of course somewhere open because they are also a Farm Shop and therefore exempt from the lockdown. When asked why she had done this so early she replied ‘well everything else is in lockdown and we have nothing to cheer us up, so let Christmas come early’ and she listed the trappings and traditions we all love from the tree to the crackers. The interviewer, at the end of the segment, remarked ‘ I get the feeling that it won’t be enough to lift the gloom - there is something missing – a sort of feeling, but more - that’s what I want most - that feeling of something more’. He then played ‘All I want for Christmas’ amidst groans from the producer audibly shared across the airwaves. Something more than the trappings is what he wanted - more than what a friend of mine calls ‘Bah Humbug’, more than the current isolation of lockdowns, more than the change that has come on us, the new language we have become accustomed to, the restrictions that really hurt, the absence of touch, and the way we have needed to adapt to a very changed way of being. Something that is all about presence and not about presents. The Christmas presence, that sense of expectancy and wonder, silence and joy-of-the-little- things, isn’t something that can be cancelled by Covid, removed by restrictions, lessened by distance, or boxed in by isolation. It will not be found in the perfect tree, nor even the most perfect of family gatherings, for it is also found in the sorrows of parting, the first Christmas without someone loved and the isolation of poverty when love is offered and accepted. If we stop to think for a moment of the first Christmas, we might catch a glimpse of the possibility of encountering this feeling of something more this Christmas in our very strange world. It wasn’t even Christmas, but a political exercise in tax gathering, that separated families, caused fear, worry, and uncertainty, isolated many and boded ill for the future economic welfare of the people being counted. Amidst the chaos, an ordinary couple of below average means, the woman heavily pregnant, sought refuge. Isolated from the world in an animal shelter a child took a first deep breath and cried. And the presence we long for slid into the world, on a baby’s cry, taken up by the angels, it echoed and echoed singing ‘Peace on earth, good will towards all’. I yearn for each of you that you might have a moment when you stop and listen for that child’s cry, pause a moment and feel something more of the Christmas Presence, and hear the echo of the angels promising all, in the end, shall be well. Rev Maria
