But Hinton Upper thank goodness for those permanent values of love and Winterbourne friendship, which cannot be devalued or be a cause of Bassett Kennet mounting debts. Ringing Times: 2 nd and 9 th January, 9.30 to 10.00 am 23 rd January, 5.30 to 6.00 pm Practice Night: Tuesdays, 7.30 to 9.00pm. All welcome. Visiting Ringers: Saturday 12 th February FULL PEAL ATTEMPT starting at 10.30am.

Bell ringers are accustomed to being in cold towers with no creature comforts, apart from the sweet tin, but the weather defeated us on 31 st November, as much for road safety reasons as for the extreme cold and the practice was cancelled. The following Tuesday was still very cold and 12 ringers turned up! Requests are coming in for full peals in 2011 and we have bookings for February, May and August. The first will be on 12 th February starting at 10.30 am, if successful, it will last for about 2¾ hours. If you have ever wondered how church bells are rung or thought you might like to learn to ring them, why not climb the spiral staircase leading to the ringing chamber on a practice night, Tuesdays 7.30 pm – 9.00 pm and see for yourself? (Not 28 th December). We hope 2011 will be a good year for you. Mary Davidge. Tel: 01672 513819 Belfry Correspondent.

Marlborough Embroiderers Guild Christmas Meeting On Monday December 6 th the Marlborough and District branch of the Embroiderers Guild held its annual Christmas Lunch at the Kennet Valley Hall in Lockeridge. Nearly 60 members and guests attended the event, despite the adverse weather conditions, and we enjoyed a lavish and varied buffet lunch, enlivened by a quiz in which the answers were all embroidery related. After lunch our guest Demi Ledwa introduced us to Indian dancing by teaching us a dance popular at weddings and parties. This is performed by pairs of dancers, using a sequence of movements with a decorated stick in each hand, and changing partners after each sequence. It can conveniently be adapted to any number of participants. Once the basic movements had been mastered, the dance was performed to Indian music, and provided enjoyable and vigorous entertainment for all, both dancers and onlookers. This was a Christmas party to remember!

The Lockeridge Christmas Tree The Residents of Lockeridge would like to give a big THANK YOU to Liz Neild for masterminding another great ‘Christmas on the Dene’. They would also like to thank Chris Cutforth for donating the wonderful tree, and the gang of six who cut it down and erected it carefully on the Dene. .

Kennet Valley Film Nights Winter Season Entertaining films in the company of friends – what better way to spend a winter Sunday evening?

9th Jan FROM TIME TO TIME Pining for Sunday evenings spent watching Downton Abbey? A wonderful cast (Maggie Smith, Pauline Collins, Hugh Bonneville) star in this lovely, quiet English film from writer and director Julian Fellowes. Great period detail (set in the winter of 1944-5), ghosts, big house, charming characters.

13th Feb ANOTHER YEAR This hugely acclaimed film from Mike Leigh follows a year in the life of a sixtysomething couple, Tom (Jim Broadbent) and Gerri (Ruth Sheen). A mature, wise reflection on life’s joys and sorrows, Another Year can take its place beside Mike Leigh’s very best films. Marked by brilliant ensemble acting and a fine symmetry of subtly defined characters. Beautifully paced, real Advertisers Index people, excellent acting.
