A View from the Rectory August 2012 Hmmm…… rather a dubious title for the article as the view seems to be fairly monotonous ie rather wet. Uffcott I found myself humming ‘Raindrops keep falling on Broad my head’ walking down Avebury High Street while Hinton Upper passing a group of tourists. One actually asked me if I Winterbourne was ‘havin’a laugh, Vicar?’. I changed the tune only Berwick Bassett to find myself whistling ‘Don’t rain on my parade’ Bassett Kennet closely followed by ‘When you walk through a Storm.’ Winterbourne I mentioned this to a friend of mine who shall remain Monkton News nameless (YOU know who you are) who said’ it could have been worse, Maria, you might have been singing ‘It’s raining men!’ Beckhampton Is it just me or do we share a collective memory of Avebury Fyfield ‘hazy, lazy days of summer’? Why is it that we look West Kennett back to summers of the past with fondness and Lockeridge nostalgia, comparing then to now with sad faces and West Overton drooping spirits? I am certain that Irish summers spent East Kennett camping had more than their fair share of rain yet what I remember of our holidays always seemed to take place within a summer of glorious sunshine. Were BERWICK BASSETT to FYFIELD summers for some of us really the halcyon days we Edition describe while nattering in the checkout queue and grumbling about the incessant rain? Or are we wasting Upper Kennet Churches valuable time and energy hankering after something long gone and faded instead of enjoying what we have Notice Board now - even if it is a bit damper than we would ideally Baptisms like. Anna Moseling 1 July Broad Hinton I love the spirit of a lady I met a while back who Emilia Corbett 8 July Avebury described BBQ-ing in the rain under the gazebos in the Alice Rendell 29 July West Overton back garden before repairing inside for hot chocolate in front of a small fire. Then there was a family sitting Weddings huddled under a brolly behind a wind-break in the Kjrsti Ryall-Gould & 14 July East Kennett stone circle eating their sandwiches. Not for them the Wayne Gardiner grim faces and mutterings of others - just a wonderful sense of the here and now, to be enjoyed ‘come rain or Tania-Marie Stone & 21 July Preshute Chris Hallett come shine’. No doubt the children will remember the laughter, the food and the ice-creams eaten afterwards This month the following couples will be getting married and we outside the Henge shop as being enjoyed in brilliant remember them in our prayers: sunshine not torrential rain - such is the impact of Rebecca Brierley & 3 August Broad Hinton living fully within the moment. David Martin Our farmers are the ones who genuinely have something to grumble about and yet they have learned Tara Powell & 18 August Winterbourne to be patient and wait for the right moment for the Oliver Pike Monkton earth to yield its bounty. To get on with what can be Lydia Elks& 24 August Preshute done and not fret about what they cannot change. As David Bauer schools break up for the summer, the Olympics get under way and family plans for the holidays begin to Burial of Ashes take shape, perhaps we could do a lot worse than celebrate what we DO have and enjoy each new day Alma England 17 July West Overton rather than continually view the summers of the past with rose tinted specs. So what if it is sou’westers and wellies instead of sunscreen and Pimms! Puddles are meant for jumping in – who is up for ‘Singing in the Rain? ’ Maria www.upperkennetnews.co.uk 1 UPPER KENNET CHURCHES SERVICES St Mary St Katherine St Peter ad St St Michael & Christ St James Magdalene & St Peter Vincula Nicholas All Angels Church WINTER- WINTER- BROAD FYFIELD WEST EAST AVEBURY BOURNE BOURNE HINTON OVERTON KENNETT MONKTON BASSETT 5 August Trinity 9 10.30 AM – BENEFICE SERVICE – COMMUNION – AVEBURY Env week 32 12.15 – WINTERBOURNE MONKTON – BUTLER BAPTISM 12 August 10.30 AM – BENEFICE SERVICE – COMMUNION – FYFIELD Trinity 10 Env week 33 19 August 10.30 AM – BENEFICE SERVICE – COMMUNION – BROAD HINTON Trinity 11 Env week 34 26 August 10.30 AM – BENEFICE SERVICE – COMMUNION – EAST KENNETT Trinity 12 Env week 35 8.00 AM 10.00 AM 8.00 AM 10.00 AM 10.30 AM 11.00 AM 10.00 AM 2 September Trinity 13 Prayer Book Informal Holy Holy Communion Communion Communion Env week 36 Service Wednesday Communion Services will take place at 10.00 am at 9, The Beeches, Winterbourne Monkton.
