JOURNALISM, LITERATURE AND POLITICS IN THE FORMATION OF LATIN AMERICAN IDENTITIES Pablo Calvi The Parrot and the Cannon. Journalism, Literature and Politics in the Formation of Latin American Identities explores the emergence of literary journalism in Latin America as a central aspect in the formation of national identities. Focusing on five periods in Latin American history from the post-colonial times until the 1960s, it follows the evolution of this narrative genre in parallel with the consolidation of professional journalism, the modern Latin American mass media and the formation of nation states. In the process, this dissertation also studies literary journalism as a genre, as a professional practice, and most importantly as a political instrument. By exploring the connections between journalism, literature and politics, this dissertation also illustrates the difference between the notions of factuality, reality and journalistic truth as conceived in Latin America and the United States, while describing the origins of Latin American militant journalism as a social-historical formation. i Table of Contents Introduction. The Place of Literary Journalism in Latin American Studies We sometimes think of journalism as one stable, continuous set of practices with a clear goal: to inform the public about the present, the current developments in our town and our world, our daily culture and life. But both as a practice and as a form of social discourse, journalism is in actual fact, far more complex. Considered as a form of social discourse, modern journalism encompasses narrative, descriptive and argumentative genres in an array of forms, produced with an array of techniques, and delivered on varied platforms and formats. These genres (defined both structurally and thematically) are in fact meant to describe (based on the mimetic premises of positivism), but also to enlighten (based on the idealistic premises of romanticism) certain aspects of our quotidian reality.1 Like all genres, the journalistic ones vary –sometimes a lot, sometimes not so much—across borders, societies and time. From epic poems to newscasts and breaking news, from open letters to the first modern interviews, from political editorials to video documentaries… news spots, human interest stories, profiles, local color stories, editorials, opinion columns, forecasts, all these forms have added 1 For a closer discussion about genres see Liddle 2009, Seriot 2007, and the classic studies of Bakhtin 1984 and Todorov 1970. This article analyses the main elements of the functioning of an emergent literary system receptive to contacts with other systems and its canon in a process of constitution: the literary movement of 1842 in Chile.     REFLECTIONS The Individualist Legacy in Latin America —————— ✦ —————— ALVARO VARGAS LLOSA t is often said that the root of Latin America’s underdevelopment lies in its sta- tist tradition.1 That tradition goes as far back as the pre-Columbian states, under I which masses of laborers toiled for the benefit of the ruling classes; it includes three centuries of corporatist and mercantilist Ibero-Catholic rule; and it has been compounded in modern times by the elitist independent republics. Through a com- bination of institutional arrangements set in place at various times by the governing cliques and cultural values transmitted from generation to generation, Latin Amer- ica’s tradition weighs so heavily against ideas of limited government, the rule of law, and personal responsibility that it would seem that an almost determinist view is jus- tified in regarding liberty as beyond the region’s reach. Yet from the days when Indians in parts of Central America and Mexico used cacao seeds as money to the present-day informal economy, the instinct of the Latin American people is no different from that of the rest of the human species. Nothing suggests that the native cultures, either in their precolonial or in their mestizo forms, could not have responded creatively and successfully to the incentives of liberty had they been allowed to operate under less-oppressive conditions. An individualist spirit has sought to manifest itself in Latin America in all histor- ical periods. This legacy goes as far back as the family units that worked their own land and exchanged goods in ancient times, moving from them to the Jesuits of the School Alvaro Vargas Llosa is a research fellow at The Independent Institute.

    Sarmiento, Echeverría and Hernández’s Implementation of Historical Reciprocation in Argentina’s Battle of Oppression by Stephen Talbot Buys A thesis submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Spanish Auburn, Alabama August 9, 2010 Approved by Patrick Greene, Chair, Assistant Professor of Spanish Jana Gutiérrez, Associate Professor of Spanish Lourdes Betanzos, Associate Professor of Spanish Abstract The socioeconomic state of Argentina during the mid-nineteenth century is characterized by a search for identity and rescue from governmental oppression. The study of various genres of literature is valuable in developing a proper understanding of the problems and remedies presented by the authors of that time period. Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, writer of Facundo, Esteban Echeverría, author of “El Matadero” and La Cautiva, and José Hernández, writer of Martín Fierro offer a fitting variety of works including prose and poetry to this study of their common theme of oppression as a socioeconomic issue in Argentina’s search for identity. Throughout this investigation, each author implements historical reciprocation by utilizing a past event and the drama within the work to diagnose the issue of governmental oppression and offer a prognosis for the future of the nation. Furthermore, a brief biographical sketch of each author offers an understanding of his political and personal viewpoints during the time of composition, while maintaining a consistent theme in light of each works’ variation of literary genre. ii Acknowledgements First and foremost, I thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for providing the ability, will power, and vision to complete this work.

Para ello intentaremos convertirnos en “tenebrosos cisnes” usando la imagen que Borges forjó en el prólogo a su edición 1935 de la HUI para definir a sus lectores ideales. Nuestro objetivo final para este trabajo es revelar algunos mecanismos aún no explorados en el estudio de estos textos fundacionales, mecanismos que nos ayuden a comprender el posicionamiento de Borges frente la prensa diaria en la Argentina de la década de 1930.
