PRESS RELEASE Fujitsu Technology Solutions Announces SPARC-Compliant PRIMEPOWER Servers for the Solaris Environment PRIMEPOWER Servers Introduce Vendor Choice, Strengthen Solaris Dominance, and Protect Customer Software Investment Sunnyvale, California, November 14, 2000 – Fujitsu Technology Solutions, Inc.—a newly formed company backed by a powerful Fujitsu Limited global product strategy— announced today that it will add Solaris SPARC-compliant Fujitsu PRIMEPOWER servers to its line-up of server solutions for large enterprises. Customers who want to run e-business, ERP, CRM, and other mission-critical commercial applications on UNIX now have an alternate source, one with enterprise data center focus and experience, for the world’s dominant UNIX operating environment. “Fujitsu Technology Solutions’ move to open up competition in the Solaris arena is a healthy development for the marketplace,” said Vernon Turner, vice president of Global Enterprise Server Solutions at IDC. “Competition is good since customers always come out ahead when they have more vendor choices. Not only does it speed technology innovation, it raises the bar in overall areas of service and customer relationships.” “Fujitsu Technology Solutions is really shaking up the competitive picture by offering an enterprise-class UNIX choice for Solaris applications, said Alan Bain,” director of Systems Engineering for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota. “In my opinion, no data center should add another UNIX server without considering PRIMEPOWER. In terms of predicted total cost of ownership and ROI, it's a real winner,” said Jeff Browning, director of the Benchmarking Center at Network Appliance, Inc. “As Fujitsu Technology Solutions, we’re providing customers a UNIX platform along with a genuine understanding of the computing enterprise,” said Steve Weller, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Fujitsu Technology Solutions. “Our deep understanding of business continuance issues from the data center perspective, extensive experience with the enterprise integration of Solaris systems, plus Fujitsu’s reputation for delivering systems with the highest reliability and resilience, is a combination customers will find hard to beat.” Fujitsu Technology Solutions offers PRIMEPOWER servers across the entire spectrum of enterprise requirements—from the smallest work-group server with one processor to the highest-capacity enterprise UNIX server in the marketplace, scalable to 128 processors. PRIMEPOWER servers feature a system bus with crossbar switch technology adapted from Fujitsu mainframe design. The result is a maximum data transfer rate of 57.6 gigabytes per second—the highest throughput of any current commercial UNIX system. Fujitsu has applied its enterprise-class reliability and technology experience to making the PRIMEPOWER family extremely resilient to support business continuance. PRIMEPOWER advantages for business continuance include a system layout optimized for reliable operation; hot-swappable components including system boards that can be replaced during operation; error checking/correction data protection on all levels of cache and data paths ensuring protection from 1-bit errors to prevent productivity disruption; and failover clustering software that has been battle-tested in hundreds of server installations worldwide. To help realize the full potential that the highly available and powerful PRIMEPOWER servers deliver, Fujitsu Technology Solutions offers the GSS 4900 storage systems. Fully configured, the GSS 4900 can handle up to 240,000 I/Os per second and can stream data at more than a gigabyte per second. All PRIMEPOWER servers connect to leading storage devices from all leading providers, but connecting PRIMEPOWER to the GSS 4900 delivers the best match to deliver the best performance. “Fujitsu Technology Solutions is introducing this proven solution to the North American marketplace. Over 1,500 are already installed in European and Asian marketplaces,” said Carol Stone, vice president of Server Marketing at Fujitsu Technology Solutions. “SAP is excited that Fujitsu is releasing their powerful PRIMEPOWER family of UNIX servers in North America as they have proven their ability to support the most demanding SAP installations on PRIMEPOWER throughout Europe,” said Anton Stoekl, global partner director at SAP AG Germany. “The strategic alliance between Fujitsu Technology Solutions and Computer Associates provides a more robust solution by leveraging the superior management of Unicenter TNG with Fujitsu's new enterprise scalable servers. Computer Associates applauds the additional value PRIMEPOWER offers our mutual clients,” said Tarkan Maner, vice president of Marketing at Computer Associates. “Theseus Logic is a Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP) company that develops and licenses NULL Convention Logic (NCL), a novel approach to the design of asynchronous Integrated Circuits,” said Bryan Smith, system administrator at Theseus Logic . “All of our design work is done on UNIX-based systems running Solaris. Fujitsu offers a wide- array of custom SPARC hardware solutions that fit our CPU-intensive chip design applications. With Fujitsu, we have achieved the best price/performance without sacrificing on service benefits.” Fujitsu Technology Solutions customers will also have access to Amdahl’s consulting and services arms to support their computing needs. The pricing of PRIMEPOWER servers varies according to configuration and is available upon customer request. For example, a mid-range pedestal-mount PRIMEPOWER 600 configuration consisting of four 360-MHz/8-MB CPU modules, 2-GB memory, four 18- GB hard disk drives, a redundant power supply, and a Solaris server license has a list price of only $89,530.
