In the last few months, NAHC has continued to present some fascinating talks as part of our on-going lecture series, as well as a wonderful excursion to Sleepy Hollow and Philipsburg Manor. Our spring talk held at the Netherland Club, was presented by Ian Fowler, curator and Geospatial Librarian for the Map Division of the New York Public Library, Cartographic Visions of New Netherland and New Amsterdam. It was met with great enthusiasm. For those who missed it, we have made a video recording available on our website. In this edition, we are pleased to offer you new articles and summaries of talks that you may have missed, for your reading pleasure. From NAHC Trustee Firth Fabend we have a fascinating article, Religion and Politics in Colonial New York: Sleepy Hollow Church and Domine Guiliam Bertholf. This past October, NAHC was honored to host Author and Honorary Reader in History at University of St. Andrews, Jaap Jacobs, direct from the Netherlands via Scotland, for a fascinating talk, The Lawyer and the Fox: A Tale of Tricks and Treachery in New Amsterdam. We thank him for sharing a short version of his talk with us for our readers. Our members and friends continue to be very generous. A very special word of thank you to one or our loyal members, Lynn Van Eick, for her gift of a beautiful map of New Amsterdam that was near and dear to her.     144 11 Corporate governance MARJOLEIN ’T HART The Bank of Amsterdam´s commissioners: a strong network For almost 200 years, up to the 1780s, the Bank of Amsterdam operated to the great satisfaction of the mercantile elite. Its ability to earn and retain the confidence of the financial and commercial elite was highly dependent on its directors, the commissioners. An analysis of their backgrounds shows that many of them once held senior posts in the city council, although the number of political heavyweights decreased over time. The commissioners also took office at an increasingly younger age. After the first 50 years of the bank, they began to stay on in office longer, indicating a certain degree of professionalisation. The commissioners had excellent connections with stock exchange circles. The majority of them were merchants or bankers themselves, and they almost all had accounts with the bank. As a result, the commissioners formed a very strong network linking the city with the mercantile community. This thesis examines what lottery loans are, why they were organized, and who invested in them. Lottery loans haven’t received much attention in debates about the development of early modern public finance. In his history of the lotteries of the Low Countries Fokker wrote in 1862 that lotteries organized by the Estates were a sign of the moral decline of the Republic. Where first lotteries had been used to raise money for charity, now the Estates used lotteries for their own benefits. 1 In his seminal work The Financial Revolution in England Dickson wrote that an ‘addiction of contemporaries to gambling on a massive scale’ was a contradictory trend to the progress in finance made in the 17 th and 18 th century. 2 Murphy, on the other hand, claims the boundaries between gambling and investment remained indistinct in the late 17 th century, and therefore connects the lotteries with the financial revolution. 3 Gelderblom and Jonker examined how market forces shaped Holland’s issuing policy.

    16de eeuw & SlaveRnij RIJKS MUSEUM & SLAVERNIJ RIJKS muSeum & SlaveRnij Het Rijksmuseum, hét Nederlandse museum voor kunst en geschiedenis, werkt permanent aan het tonen van een completer beeld van het Nederlandse verleden. De 17de, 18de en 19de eeuw zijn daar een belangrijke periode in, de tijd waarin Nederland zich een machtspositie op het wereldtoneel verwierf. Die koloniale macht is onlosmakelijk verbonden met een systeem waarin slavernij een staats­ aangelegenheid was. Onder Nederlands gezag werden rondom de Atlantische en de Indische Oceaan mannen, vrouwen en kinderen tot slaaf gemaakt, onder dwang tewerkgesteld en tot objecten in administraties gereduceerd. Gedurende 250 jaar was het mensen in slavernij verboden zich te uiten, zich te laten horen, om bezit te hebben, om hun leven te documenteren. Dit systeem heeft zijn weerslag in de museumcollectie, zoals blijkt uit de 77 teksten van Rijksmuseum & Slavernij. In de korte teksten wordt de relatie toegelicht tussen het object en ons slavernijverleden. De onderwerpen die aan bod komen variëren van de toenmalige machthebbers, de Nederlandse aanwezigheid in bezet gebied, de relaties tussen de Nederlandse economie en slavernij, koloniale producten, de slavenhandel, en de kerk en slavernij, tot de aanwezig­ heid van mensen van kleur in Nederland en de manier waarop zij in kunst en kunstnijverheid zijn verbeeld, evenals de stemmen die opgingen tegen slavernij. De teksten van Rijksmuseum & Slavernij zijn vanaf februari 2021 een jaar lang terug te vinden op extra tekstbordjes in het museum: van de afdeling middeleeuwen tot in de afdeling 20ste eeuw. Ze zijn gebundeld in dit boekje. Daarbij is tot en met de zomer van 2021 de tentoonstelling Slavernij te zien.

  • Art at Auction in Th Century Amsterdam
    JOHN MICHAEL MONTIAS This book exploits a trove of original documents that have survived on the auctions organized by the Orphan Chamber of Amsterdam in the first half of the seventeenth century. For the first time, the names of some 2000 buyers of works of art at auction in the 29 extant notebooks of the Chamber have been systematically analyzed. On the basis of archival research, data have been assembled on the occupation of these buyers (most of whom were merchants), their origin (Southern Netherlands, Holland, and other), their religion, their year of birth, their date of marriage, the taxes they paid and other indicators of their wealth. Buyers were found to cluster in groups, not only by extended family but by occupation, religion (Remonstrants, Counter-Remonstrants) and avocation (amateurs of tulips and of porcelain, members of Chambers Art at Auction in of Rhetoricians, and so forth). The subjects of the works of art they bought and the artists to which they were attributed are also analyzed. The second part of the book on “Selected Buyers”, is devoted to art dealers who bought at auction and four to buyers who had special connections with artists, including principally Rembrandt. As a whole, the book offers a penetrating insight into the culture of the Amsterdam elite in the seventeenth century.
