It must have been difficult then to imagine a mature university serving nearly 30,000 students standing in this mainly agricultural region. With the appointment of Delmar^lT- • Oviatt as dean in September 1955, thc- coUege's first classes were held at the M initial site of San Fernando High School. About 800 students attended" evening courses taught by 10 professors. The planners' choice for a permanent site was a pumpkin patch in the ran ching community of Northridge. The infant school was the San Fernando Valley branch of Los Angeles State College of the Applied Arts, in the same way that UCLA had been the Southern Campus for UC Berkeley. ' Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on Jan. 4, 1956, and two weeks' later, construction began on^ 14 blue and brown bungalows that would be th^ temporary home for the new campus. Water and electricity were barely in stalled in time for the official dedication ceremonies Sept. 24, 1956, when the American flag and the California Bear were raised over the campus for the first time. By the start of the school's second semester, it had 1,748 students, a 20 percent increase over the fall's population. More than half were education majors, a pattern that would continue for the next several years. The school newspaper debuted on Registration Day, Feb. 1,1957. In place of the paper's name, there was a big question mark and a request for readers to give suggestions. The State Standard was tried, but by March had been discarded in favor of the State Sundial. The class of '57 liked sundials so much that it gave one to the school as its class gift, creating a landmark of sorts. The Sunburst, the school annual, also appeared that year. It contained few pictures of the campus' humble facilities. It chose instead to concentrate on the people and JbQundle^ op portunities at the school. Northridge before the birth of the university Fernando Valley. What became the busflirtg~~ — community of Northridge was once home to Gabrielino ry Indians and pioneer ranchers. When explorers first came to the arid valley in the late 1760s, they discovered a cool oasis in its northe section. The watering hole was a gatherinK place for the Indians native to the area. The Gabrie;finos, who were responsible for place names such as Topanga and Tujunga, lost their nomadic freedom by 1767 when the San Fernando Mission was established nearby. In 1822, more than 1,000 Indians were working at the mission. Others had fled the area to escape the slave labor conditions. Mexico took over California during its revolt against Spain in the 1830s. Later, American forces decided to take over the territory and in 1846 Mexico sold a San Fernando Valley rancho 13 of square leagues to Eulogio de Celis, a native of Spain. Four years later, California was admitted to the Union and that year's census of Los Angeles County listed de Celis as a !*I,J 42-year-old agriculturist with real estate worth S20,000. The heirs of de Celis split up the land after his death. The northern half of the valley went to Senators George K. Pwter and Charles Maclay. Porter, who was interested in ranching, called the 56,000 acres the "Valley of the Cumberland." Maclay, who was more interested in settlement, called the land "the Garden of Eden." Porter's cousin, Benjamin, came to California to join him as a partner. The Southern Pacific Railway brought settlers to the area in the 1870s using incentives such as cut-rate fares and transportation of lumber for housing at half the regular rate. Free barbecues, hosted by Maclay, SIso were held to attract residents. Town lots, 25 by 100 feet, sold for S10 to $50 each. Farmland was sold at %5 to $40 per acre in 40-acre tracts. As the Valley began to develop, differences between the Porters and Maclay also developed. They decided to separate their holdings. By 1882 the three had amicably parted, each with about 20,000 acres.
