He married (2) CLARA BELL CURTIS, WILKERSON 12 Jan 1923 in Kansas. She was born 10 Jan 1903 in Kansas, and died 29 Jun 1990 in Baldwin, Ks.. Notes for *WILLIAM "PETE OR WEAVE" WEAVER VAN OSDOL: He died of a self inflicted gun shot . There was no note left to tell why he ended his life. His son Leland was sleeping in the same room with him and many years later, when he was still young, but now a grown man, he was found dead behind the gas station where he worked and he had been shot. To this day it is an unsolved crime. It was never determined if he killed himself or if some one murdered him. From Rush County News- Rush Co., Kansas- April 1948 FORMER RESIDENT TAKES OWN LIFE William Weaver Van Osool, 67, long time Rush county resident, died at his farm home near Princeton early Sunday morning from a self- inflicted gunshot. Death was instantaneous when the shot from a 20-guage shotgun struck his heart. Relatives could give no reason for his action except that he had been despondent for several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Van Osdol moved from La Crosse, KS. to near Princeton several months ago. Prior to their move, he had been with the Rush county road department for nearly twenty-five years. Funeral services were conducted here Wednesday and burial was made in the La Crosse cemetery. Born in Bethel, MO., December 11, 1880, Mr. Van Osdol came to Kansas at an early age. He lived in Rush Center for a number of years, later moving to La Crosse. He is survived by his wife, two sons, George of Pauls Valleey, OKla., Leland, of the home, one step-daughter Mrs. Juanita Kreie and by six chidren by his first marriage, Elton of Los Angeles, CA., Mrs. A. L. Keck of Colby, Ks., Mrs C. E. Reneau of Los Angeles, Mrs. Rexford T. Bowman of Loudonville, Ohio, and Perry of La Crosse, KS.. From Bessie Van Osdol Schneider's book on the family called "The Van Arsdalen Family though 12 Generations" pages 42-44 He was a part-time farmer who never got the "feel of the land" but who had "a way with motors," a "Natural-born mechanic" best described Weaver whose relatives called him "Weave " and his friends called him "Pete." [She does not explain where this neckname came from.] He came to Kansas when he was about 19 years of age and eventually was hired by Joseph Wesley Blackburn McClintock to help on his farm located south of Rush Center. After his marriage to Mr. Clintock's daughter Clara in 1905, Weve and Clara moved to Gove County, Kansas, "to live on a homestead and prove it up." Elton was born there while they were living at Shields. [Shields is in Lane Co. not Gove Co. Elton was born in a sod house on the prairie.] when the young couple moved back to Rush Center Bertha [Bertie] was born. Taking the two small tots, the couple returned to Missouri for a visit; however, they remained and lived there for 10 years. After Grandmother Catherine's [Catherine Vawter Van Osdol] death in 1913, Weave and Clara moved into the George H. Van Osdol farm home to live with Grandfather George while Weave tended the farm. They lived there for 3 1/2 years. But, because the nearest school was three miles from the farm, a long walk for small Elton and Bertha, Clara insisted that they move to Shelbina where there was a good school within walking distance, for now three of growning family had to be considered. It was in Shelbina that Weave's mechanical ability came to light, especially when working on the motors of cars at Saunder's Garage. For several years this became Weave's specialty. Dspite the growing family, now numbering five, Weave became restless and went job hunting in Kansas. He was hired as a machanic in the Harris Garage in Hanover, Kansas, and so Clara packed up the family nad moved to Hanover. World War I ended and with it came the dreaded 1918 flu attack, something we managed to survive. When Vesta Merle was about three months old, Clara, this time alone, packed up the family belongings and taking the six children feft for Rush Center, Kansas where her parents lived. [Weave deserted her and the 6 children and lived with Clara Bell Curtis Wilkerson before he married her. This means that Clara moved to Rush Center in June of 1920.] After about a year, Grandmother Francis [Wolf] Mc Clintock became ill and left to live in Dallas, Texas, with her daughter Mary Frances [Aunt May], and so Clara and her six moved into the Mc Clintock residence (near Rush Center, KS.) to take care of Grandfather Mc. [Joseph Wesley Blackburn Mc Clintock]. Because of Grand-dad's 18 months service in Co. A, First Pennsylvania Cavalry during the Civil War War, he qualified for entrance into the Veteran's Home in Roseburg.Oregon, providing he could prove established residence in oregon for a six month's period. He left Rush Center and went to live with a daughter, Mrs. Matilda Thompson [Aunt Tillie] at Salem, Oregon, for the six months required residence for entrance into the home. (His back was hurt during the Civil War when his unit was out on patrole and as the years progressed he developed a hunch back because of the ingury. It got so bad that he could not longer work his farm. He had to prove how his ingury happened in order to get a pension. Glee Van Osdol has his pension records and he had a terrible time hunting down someone who knew him when the ingury happend and could vouch for his back ingury. He finally found someone who was able to do this. See the notes under his family work sheet.] From then on the former Mc Clintock residence became our home for about 20 years. In 1920, after the divorce decree had been granted to Clara, Weave married a yaoung divorcee Clara {Curtis] Wilkerson who had a small daugher, Juanita. Weave and his second wife lived in La Crosse where he became a member of the maintenance crew of the Rush County Highway Department, He becane foreman, retiring about 1948. {Weave and Clara Bell married in 1923 not 1920 like this reads.] Like everyone elso, we lived though the financial crisis, the stockmaket crash of 1929 and the closing of the banks. Times were hard; jobs were scarce. Then came the depression and next the Dust Bowl Era. Despite all of this, Clara kept her brood of six together and saw five of them being graduated from La Crosse Rual High School, yet managed to keep the home in Rush Center. ------1910 Federal census, Rush Co., Kansas, Center township Weaver W. Notes for *CLARA ORA MCCLINTOCK: When Clara had her last child Vesta she got milk leg. [thrombosis in a femoral vein. This occurred frequently after childbirth and it can kill but she surrived.] After that she had a stiff right leg and left arm. Some how this affected her arm too. She had to be very tough to surrive it and continue to take care of her children. I [Glee] remember her when I was a child and she came to visit us and she would let me ride her leg like it was a stick horse. She had a lot of patience and also let me comb her hair, She always kept her hair very short but I still managed to get the comb tangeled in her hair and then she would have a terrible time getting it untangeling it. She made all of her grand children clothes. She would come to and spend several months. She would stay a while with us and then move on to Aunt Dorothy's house and her three children. She spent many hours at the sewing machine and I still have pictures of the many outfits that she made me. She made all of them outfits during World War Two that were copies of WAC and Army uniforms. I still have mine. It was regulation down to the hat. It has since shrank from the dryer and the sleeves on the shirt were cut off so I could continue to were it. I loved to wear it as much as possible and have a picture of my self with it on. Other members of the family and friends also wore it. My two daughters wore it trick or treating and people did not know what kind of costume it was. [people have short memories. Donna wore in the the 1960s and Stacey in the 1970's. Wonder if anyone would reconise it today as a WAC Uniform from World War Two. My Mother says that when Weave left Clara it devastated her and it turned her into a bitter woman in many ways. She called him Pete and talked about his leaving her with all of those children made her life so very hard. My mother says that it was so hard on her for she was madly in love with him and it must of hurt her to the core. She never really got over the breakup. The wounds healed but there was a big scar on her heart. She lived alone for many years in La Crosse in a basement apartment. I have visited there several times as a child and teanager. I remember one large room. It was divided by a curtin on one end and this was used as a sleeping area. She had a small kitchen and bathroom. I remember that the water was the worst tasting water I ever drank. I did learn to drink it but never liked it. I went one year [1955] with my father on the train to La Crosse, Kansas for his 26th High School reunion. After the reunion my father took me to Kansas City on the train and he saw me onto the train to Tulsa OK where I was met by relatives to visit in Oklahoma for a while. Then my mother came on the train to OK. and we stayed a while and then returned by train to Los Angeles, CA. We rode the train to Kansas and OK. almost every year from 1950 to 1958 to visit relatives in those two states. Elton worked for the railroad and we had a pass and we could ride free. From Kansas City to Tulsa OK we had to pay half fair on the train for it was not the Union Pacific, the railroad that my father worked for. Rush Co., Kansas News 17 April 1975 MRS. From a Riverside CA. newspaper. Newspaper name is unknown. Article sent to me by my mother in Dec. 2000. It has a small picture of Eltom and Jewell [Neel] Van Osdol 7OTH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Jewell and Elton Van Osdol of Riverside celebrated their 70th anniversary with family and friends at a dinner party at the home of their daughter Junelle Budzinski of Lake Forest. Mr. and Mrs. Van Osdol were married in La Crosse, Kan., on July 12, 1930. Mr. Van Osdol retired in 1975 after 25 years as a stationary engineer with the Union Pacific Railroad. [Stationary Engineer was his last position on the railroad and he did not hold that position for 25 years.] Mrs. Van Osdol is a home maker. Both are members of Riverside Free Methodist Church. Their other children are Willora Glee Krapf of Pennsylvania and the late Donna McCarthy. [Donna was not their daughter but their grand daughter and she spent a great deal of her life living with her grandparents.] They have five grandchildren. [They really just have three grandchildren. Two of those children are Donna's children. Donna was adopted by Willora Glee and June was an adopted child of Jewell and Elton. Both children were Korean Orphans.] He was good at machenics like his father. We always had a used car and he kept it running until it could not be fixed any more. When it got tired looking he bought another used car [always a Chevrolet] and drove it to church and to the store and kept the older car to drive to work. It was not until he retired that my parents finally bought a brand new car. Two years,1948, before he started working on the railroad we drove to Kansas and OK in December over the Christmas holidays. It was my first and only Christmas on the farm. My Mother's parents did not have electricety and my father chopped a tree in the woods and it was trimed with paper chains and popcorn and very little else. She had no Christmas decorations in any way. My grandparents never bothered with a tree at Christmas time. I remember getting a Betsy Wetsy Doll that Chrismas of 1948. My father was always jerryrigging things. He really tried to invent things but some how they did not come out the way he intended them to. Once it was very hot and we were complaining of the heat. He took a old metal barell and cut the bottom out of it and mounted a fan inside and put a hose to it and put it on a platform so it would fit up to the bathroom window. The bathroom window was directly over the toilet. When he turned the fan on it sprayed a water mist through the window. This was his version of a water cooler. We lived in the semiarid outskirts of LA. It did a pretty good job of cooling BUT when you tried to go to the toilet you got a shower. No one wanted a shower while they were on the toilet so he had to take it down. The cool air was supposed to cool off the bathroom hall and the living room but the cool air did not reach that far. If he turned the fan up to a higher speed then you really got the water. It could not be controlled from inside of the house. One year he decided to make my mother a Christmas gift. There was nothing wrong with his idea but he just could not quite carry it off. He wrapped them all in one large box and she was going nuts trying to guess what was in the box. He enjoyed her fussing about what it could possibely be. When she opened the box it was several picture frames that he had made. He got some bamboo from someplace and cut them for the sides. He got plexiglass and cut them to different sizes, like 8X10 and 5X7. There was a plexiglass on both sides of the picture so it was double sided and then there was the bottom witch was another two pieces of plexiglass. It was shaped like this side view. _ll_ The bamboo held the sides of the upright covers over the pictures. The bottoms slanted slightly up towards the picture. You could slide the picture between the two verticle pieces of plexiglass. This sounds good but there was not a straight cut piece of plexiglass in any of the picture frames and so this made them look tacky. I think that every piece of plexiglass was crooked in some way. She did not want to use them because of the sloppy job he did cutting the plexiglass but she finally used them. I do not remember how long she used them but they finally disappeared. One year he bought from someone several potholders that were in the shape of ladies under pants. These were crocheted. She was mad all Christmas day. She did not like gifts for the kitchen. He finally learned that he was better off to buy her a plant of somekind. That always made her happy for she loved to garden both with flowers and vegetables. In LA you can grow almost anything and she had outside and inside plants everywhere. When they moved to Rose Garden Village. They had a small 1 bedroom apartment and a small front yard with grass. She got my father to dig up the grass and they planted a beautiful flower garden. Some of it was in pots and some directely in the ground. They made the local paper with a picture of the garden and them standing in the middle of what they had created. Under the picture it read: In a year's time at Rose Garden Village in Riverside, Elton and Jewell Van Osdol have filled their apartment's front yard with roses, sweet allysum, pansies, petunias, hollyhock and much more. Title of article A HAPPY RETIREMENT THATS GONE TO SEED. BY Weezy Wold Home and Garden Writer. Retirement may mean anything from round-the- clock soap opera viewing to round-the-world cruises. For a couple at Rose Garden Village, a retirement community on Adams Street in Riverside, it means a time to do things together --- such as developing a barren front yard into a thing of beauty to be enjoyed by themselves and their neighbors. Jewell and Elton Van Osdol moved just a year ago to one of the older apartments at Rose Garden Village, which meant taller shade trees and older existing shrubs. It also meant, in their case, a very bare front yard except for a few shrubs --- some low cypress --- and some weeds that were suffering from lack of attention. The couple went into action. Thank goodness tenants are welcome to cultivate the land at Rose Garden. Soil amendments, worked into the hard ground, helped to make it more fertile and allow irrigation water and oxygen to reach plant roots. An existing sprinkler system was capped off because the couple preferred to do their own watering. Because the ground sloped away from the apartment, the couple knew they could expect runoff water and top soil on the front sidewalk. This was avoided by installing two concrete block walls, one across the middle of yard and another flanking the sidewalk. It also allowed them to raise the soil level. By placing the blocks with the open sides up, the opening became flower pots for sedums and small, flowering border plants. "We put in sack and sacks of steermanure and potting soil," Jewell said "I did the planting but [Elton] did the spading. We both placed the concrete block edgings." Two trees in the front yard had been cut down, leaving long stumps almost 5 feet tall. A pole nailed to the trees became a crossbar and a perfect support for hanging plants --- baskets of colorful geraniums in bloom. "I never had a garden before . We came from Oklahoma and we had large yards with lots of lawn and shrubs and just a few flowers as borders. I always longed in my heart o have a little spot where I could plant bright-colored flowers." Jewell said, her excitement reflected in her words. Before they moved to Riverside, the Van Osdols lived in Green River Village and before that in Santa Fe Springs. Elton retired 10 ago from Union Pacific Railroad. "I'm not ready for the rocking chair and don't count pills, but I work in the garden several hours a day, " Jewell said. She does most of the gardening but her husband helps with the watering, now that the heavy work is done. He doesn't know one plant from the other. I could plant weeds and he wouldn't know the difference. But he really enjoys the garden." They sit at the patio and both enjoy the color and the visitors. "People come by, even some in wheelchairs who take the long way around to come by and see our garden," Jewell said. There is no lawn and no shortage of color in the yard. Among the perennial plants are eight rose bushes, some in bloom. Jewell's favorite is Bonanza. Annual and perennial flowers are scattered. White and purple sweet allysum, pansies, Johnny-Jumps-ups, mums and many striking single and double petunias in the ground and in pots add to the screne. Background plants include ready-to-bloom hollyhocks. "I made some mistakes and learned a lot planting the flowers and bulbs. The iris and gladiolus and hollyhocks are too close together. But I learn by doing. The happiest part of our day is the watering and sitting on the patio seeing the color." Buckets at the edge of the patio hold water and fertilizer at the ready. Several large half-barrels are within the garden. One holds a tomato plant, the other a squash, Elton said. "That's not a squash," Jewell contradicted "it's a cucumber. I could feed him alfalfa and he wouldn't complain, she said. TRIBUTE, JEWELL VAN OSDOL By Ben C. Anibal Given at the Funeral on March 7, 2002. When Jewell and Elton first started attending the Riverside Free Methodist church, They had just moved from Santa Fe Springs to Green River near Corona (CA.). While visiting them there, right away I discovered that Jewell loved flowers. She had some beautiful roses that Elton helped her care for. In Our initial visit there in their lovely mobile home, Jewell told us how she gave her heart to Jesus under the ministry of Dr. Byron Lamson's father. Both she and Elton became very involved in Los Angeles Second (Free Methodist) Church-- She teaching a sunday school class and Elton helping to maintain the church property. She loved all her pastors, which included Rev. George Daggett (Rev Frank Abbott) and Rev. Elton Mills, who is here today. By the time they came to Riverside church, Jewell was no longer teaching Sunday School, but was a faithful attender of the W.M. I. [Womans Missionary Society) For three Christmases after moving to Rose Garden Village in Riverside , Jewell and Elton invited the members of the W.M.I. (Both men and women) to Christmas parties at tge Village center. She had a part in the program and Allan Bendel provided Ice Cream treats for refreshments. While still living at Green River before their move to Riverside, Jewell and Elton invited the Lamsons and Anibals to dinner. Jewell was a great cook. At the end of the meal, she served Lemon Pie. Delicious!!!!!!! she asked Dr. Lamson if he would like another piece of pie. He said, "Yes", but please don't give it to me. Agreat compliment to the cook, even though he had had his limit. Before Jewell's leg amputation and before Betty's car accident, Jewell said to Betty, "I'd like to go to just one women's retreat, but I can't climb those hills to the Lodging areas." Plans were made for them to stay in cedar Lodgeat Oak Glen. Betty drove Jewell up there about 12 or 13 years ago. Just recently while visiting Jewell, she was recounting some pleasant memories which included that retreat. She said, "Oh, what a great time we had." She laughed and said, "Betty's bed broke down in the middle of the night because a slat broke! !" Betty remembers Jewell saying "Honey, what was that noise--- are you alright?" Betty was fine and slept on the floor until morning. The men came up the next morning and fixed the bed. When she was able, Jewell loved to be on the "go"-- Be it a trip, an outing, or eating out---whatever. She also enjoyed having folks come by for a visit wherever she was living at the time. I well remember the last time when the Joy singers sang for her at Villa Health Care. Jewell was truly blessed and joined in on some of the singing---especially the song "Amazing Grace." Jewell was never one to leave anything to your imagination. If she was happy she told you so--- if she was unhappy, she let you know that, too. One thing she was never shy about was sharing her faith. Not only did she tell you of her conversion, but also her experience of being filled with the holy spirit. Just recently while visiting her, she told us again how she was filled with the Holy Spirit at Second (Free Methodist) church. As she described it---it was that time when she felt the gentle warmth of God's Holy Spirit surge through her whole body from the top of her head to the bottom of her feet. She had a deep faith in God who was always there in the good times and the testing times. Over the years she won a number of her friends and neighbors to the Lord. Jewell would agree with the words of the song that says: "My God is real, and I can feel his deep Him deep in my soul." Right now she is experiencing how real God is as she stands in her eternal presence, where she is reunited with Elton and all her loved ones who have gone on before her. Thank you, Jewell, for sharing your life, your love, and your spiritual journey with us. Good-Bye until we meet againin that land where there are no physical handicaps, no heart aches, and no more good-byes!!!!! Read and Written by June Ellen Van Osdol Budzinski at Jewell Neel Van Osdol funeral. In January of 1930, a young woman prepared to leave home for the first time. My mother was 19 years old, very thin with deep chestnut hair and bright, hazel green eyes. She wanted desperately to expand her life beyond the confines of the Oklahoma farmhouse she had known all of her life. How her head must have been swimming when she boarded her cousin's car and rode to La Crosse, Kansas. It must have seemed like another world. My Great Aunt Mary helped my mother find a job - housekeeping for a couple that worked for the government. She did all the chores necessary to keep the household running smoothly. She made $6.00 a week, a tremendous wage for that time! Perhaps my mother's legendary cooking skills took root there during her first job. My Great Uncle Amos had a tractor driver named Elton. Aunt Mary and Uncle Amos rented my father a room. He was 22 years and the essence of good looks: tall, dark and handsome. He had his own car. From the moment he met my mother, he liked her. They were married in July of the same year that they met. Ten years later they had Willora Glee. They were so happy to be having a baby and they enjoyed those early years with her, in spite of her being legally blind. My mother and father had been married 28 years when my mother got involved in making diapers for the Holt orphanage in Korea. My mother has always loved babies, all babies. Mrs. Kirby, the woman spearheading the diaper project, happened to be Harry Holt's cousin. My mother and father had been wanting to adopt a baby and had been trying to do so within the United States. However at their ages, 47 and 50 respectively, they were considered too old. Harry Holt held no such prejudice and only asked that my mother and father were Christians and would promise to raise me with Christian values. Glee and her first husband had adopted a toddler from Korea, Donna. When Glee's rocky marriage failed, my mother and father became Donna's guardians. What courage it took to adopt me, and then agree to raise Donna as well. All of the typical reasons couples are reluctant to adopt existed then as they do today. The uncertainty of what genetic code may be ticking in that baby's brain like a time bomb. The uncertainty of not knowing if you could love a baby that is not biologically yours. The fear that a biological parent may someday step forward and try to regain custody. In addition to all of this, the racial issues existed. How would the adopted baby be accepted by the extended family? What to tell the baby as she grew up? I never remember my mother or my father telling me I was adopted. I just always knew. My mother told me that she used to tell me when I was a baby, as she rocked me to sleep. As I grew up, I realized that my mother often felt inferior to others that had more money or more education, or both. She was impressed by people that had powerful careers. She lived simply and made things simple. For example, a few years ago I was having a telephone conversation with her. I was ranting on and on about how complicated and stressful my life had begun. I was trying to juggle work, marriage, Toastmasters, and friends and my time seemed so limited. Why does my life have to be so complicated I lamented. "Well dear, you make it that way" was her reply. She was right. My mother touched so many people's lives. She loved simply and deeply. How many of you have been blessed by my mother? How many of you have enjoyed her delicious meals, her mouth watering lemon pie or her chicken and dumplings? How many of you have sought my mother, this simple woman, out for counsel when no educated, professional counselor could have brought you what she brought you: love and wisdom. How many of you took shelter with my mother when you had no place to stay? Growing up, we did not have money to go on exotic vacations. There was no money for piano lessons or private school. But she always had enough food prepared for an extra person or two, just in case. It seems that God was noticing all of my mother's generosity and concern towards others, as he sent a special individual to care for both my mother and my father in their later years. If there is ever a person on earth with angelic blood running through his veins, it is Allan Bendel. For many years he was a companion, a chauffeur, a messenger, a secretary, and an accountant for my mother and father. My mother has said numerous times during her life that she could never repay him. Now I must echo her words. I cannot express my gratitude deeply enough to convey how grateful I really am to this amazing man. I would like to close my tribute my reading a poem that my mother wrote years ago. The poem came to her as a song, but we will never know its melody. Please notice this poem does ask for anything for herself, no healing for herself, no prosperity for herself. It is indicative of how she lived - for others. My Prayer When my life on earth is through Lord I'm coming home to you. I will live for thee here day by day and I won't complain when you call me away. Yes I will come; Gladly come, because My race here has been won. To be with Thee where we will need no sun. I love to pray to thee above, To thank thee for thy wondrous love, For all the care and blessings here, Yes Lord I know thou art near. Lord my Dad is still in sin, But my mission is his soul to win. I'm praying for him every day To come to thee before he is taken away. My mother is praying too, Lord grant our prayers will be prayed through. My brothers too are in the dark, Lord help me to do my part, That they will see and gladly come And our home will be a Christian one. It is my prayer and never will cease, Until they come to thee for peace, And when that mission here is done, If it's Thy will to say: "Well Done". Pastor Dan Bishop officiated the ceremony, he is such a mild mannered man. I had given him an information document (attached) and he pretty much read it. He also elaborated some on his own. Pastor Dan got choked up when he spoke about Allan. Pastor Ben Anibal spoke from his heart as well. Pastor Alton Mills gave a real fire and brimstone message. He spoke about mother, but not too much. He went on to speak about Moses and Abraham. My friend, Holly sang, "Amazing Grace" and "Grace that is Greater than All Our Sins". She has a very beautiful, professionally trained soprano voice. All were blessed that listened to her. I gave my tribute (also attached) and made it all the way through without breaking down. The graveside service was very brief, it was very chilly and windy. Per Allan’s wishes, we left all of the flowers at the grave. I took one loose arrangement and adorned Daddy’s grave with it. We had about 40 people at the funeral, a pretty good turn out considering the driving distance and mother’s age. Uncle L.C. and Aunt Ellen were there. June and Tom Zaby were there, along with Tommy (who has cancer) and Antoninette. Nadine and Lorraine were there. Wanda Leong attended, as well as my son. Pastor Ben and Betty and Pastor Dan joined us. There were several of my friends that met mother, but only a couple of times. These would include Joe and Patty, and George and Diana, and one of my best friends, Suzanne. Then there were my friends that had never met mother but came out to support me: Doug and Holly, Vince, and Mary. A real surprise was my ex-boss, Diane Orzepowski. My mother’s friend, Dorothy Lechner (94 years old) attended, and of course, Allan. Shirley enjoyed Dorothy’s lively conversation. My sister in law, Michelle attended with her husband, Paul. The prevailing atmosphere of the dinner was not dark and dismal. We were celebrating mother’s life and we had a wonderful time of fellowship. Every single person there appreciated the planning that went into the dinner at the Olive Garden. The food was good. Mother would have been pleased. Mother’s marker will be in the same dark gray granite material and the same Arial font. Daddy’s has a train drawing. Mother’s will have six roses along the bottom, very pretty. It will be a while before the marker is placed, but I will take a photo and send it to you. I have some other photos to send to you as well. I found the original marriage certificate and will send it to you. Shirely took some photographs of mother in the casket, and also of the flowers. Would you like a photo? Also, I have a few photos of daddy in the casket as well and would be happy to send you one. Just let me know. I spoke with Flora (used to be Morphew – the one that married Uncle Robert) and she was very grieved. She wanted to attend the funeral but she had to work. She also wanted your phone number and address. Her daughter, I don’t know if you remember Joyce, did attend. Jennifer and Florence Takeuchi attended the funeral, as did Georgia (Doris Boatright’s daughter) and her son, George, Manuella and Lori. Gary Lee, the director of Villa Health Care attended too. Lori Drinovsky, Mother’s neighbor at Green River in Corona came with her little boy, David. Of course all of the people listed above at the dinner attended the funeral. Mother’s friend, Nancy attended the funeral but I did not see her after that. Brenda, Uncle Ollie’s daughter called me and wants to keep in touch. The pallbearers were: Paul (my husband), Matt (my son), Doug Shanklin (friend), Vince Francis (friend), George Tsavahidis (friend), Gary Blackburn (from Villa), and Joe Gray (friend). Gary had to leave, so Joe took over for him. Allan held up pretty well. I plan to call him today and check in on him. I plan to have lunch with him at least once a month. There are some loose ends to tie up, such as mother’s clothes that are at his house and settling up at Villa Health Care. Please pray for Allan at this time. Well my account of things is a little disjointed and I apologize. I hope to mail out the thank you cards this weekend. Perhaps it will help bring additional closure as well. Take care Glee, I know this is a difficult time for you, Allen and Stacey. My prayers and thoughts are with you. Junelle Budzinski Hi Dan, (notes for Rev. Dan Bishop who helped with the funeral from June Ellen) Use as much or as little of the following information as you'd like in your eulogy to my mom. I would like you to recognize Allan for his support and love for my mom. Let me know if you need any other information. Born Jewell Neel on 5/31/11 in a log cabin on top of a mountain in Gideon, Oklahoma. Delivered by Aunt Mary Haney-Jarvis - her father's (wrong-her grandmother's sister) sister. Died on 3/1/02 at about 11:45 am from a massive coronary. Had been struggling with problems stemming from her long-term diabetes: glaucoma, hearing loss, kidney failure, weakness in her heart (conjestive heart failure)and a persistent sore on her foot. Survived by her brother, L.C. Neel and her sister, Geraldine Crawford. Survived by two daughters and Son-In-Law, Junelle and Paul and daughter Willora Glee Krapf. Survived by 5 (incorrect 3) grandchildren: Allen, Stacey, TaiLin, Che and Matthew. (ThiLin and Che Lee were her great grandchildren.) Married Elton Van Osdol on July 12, 1930, by the Justice of the Peace. Married for ten years, then got pregnant and gave birth to Willora Glee. About that same time, Jewell and Elton purchased their first car. Unfortunately Jewell had a very difficult time giving birth and due to health complications, Glee was born legally blind and colored blind. Despite Glee's handicap, Jewell enjoyed Glee's childhood Adopted Junelle from the Holt Orphanage in Korea, in the late 1950's. Glee and Buddy Seeburg adopted Donna from the same Holt Orphanage. Their marriage dissolved and Jewell and Elton felt heir to raising Donna. There were many happy moments raising Junelle and Donna, as well as financial struggles. Jewell and Elton were always proud of their adopted daughters. The entire family lived in Watts (now East LA) until the situation began tense do to racial problems between the blacks and the whites. The family moved to Santa Fe Springs before the first round of Watts riots broke out.Jewell and Elton later moved to Corona, to the Green River Mobile Home Park. They spent many happy hours there. Elton tended the roses. Jewell cooked, made pillows, and tended plants on her sun porch. She also raised two cockatiels, Croutons and Crackers. Once they were old enough to live at Rose Garden Village, they put their name on the list. This small, but well-kept retirement community offered good housing at affordable rates. Once they were moved into Rose Garden Village, both of their green thumbs went to work. Before you know it, their entire porch and front yard was filled with flowers and plants. Jewell became friends with Allan Bendal while at Rose Garden Village. Allan became the primary caregiver for both Jewell and Elton for many, many years. He was at her side when she passed away. Sadly, eventually both Jewell and Elton had to move to an assisted living facility due to declining health for both of them. Elton seemed rather content. Jewell complained about the food because it was not prepared to her liking. This is understandable because she was such a good cook. Jewell and Elton lived in three different assisted living facilities. Jewell's hobbies included cooking, sewing and gardening. She also enjoyed reading. She attended church faithfully as long as her health allowed. She remained faithful all of her life to her husband, her family, her faith and her friends. Notes for PERRY HUBERT "STEAMBOAT" VAN OSDOL: May or June 1984 in an unknown Kansas Newspaper These artices were in my mothers papers when she died. Article by Fred Mann Its Full Speed Ahead for "Steamboat" and the Torch Every morning, Perry "Steamboat" Van Osdol chugs three miles around a track in Hutchinson (Kansas) on his bad foot, holding a 3-pound hitching ball aloft. He is 66, a retired (medically retired) Army man. His foot was shot up by a sniper on the beach at Anzio, Italy, in 1944 during World War ll. On June 9, the hitching ball with be replaced by the official torch of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games, and Steamboat will run one kilometer with it through Independence, along U.S. 75, on its journey across America. "I call it a fast walk," says steamboat, one of 25 Kansans who will carry the torch in the state. "Ive gotten to where I can do jast a little bit of a jog. I do sort of a side shuffle. Use the heel more than anything. But I can make it in seven minutes." He's working on his time with the help of his wife of 45 years, Hazel, a.k.a. Tugboat, who trains with him. He and Hazel plan to hitch up the trailer, go down and spend some time around Independence waiting for the big moment, which, at least for now, is scheduled to arrive about 10 a.m. As of now, the torch is supposed to come through Kansas City to Lawrence, then south to Yates Center, Altoona, Neodesha, Independence, Caney and into Oklahoma, according to the Torch Relay Committee in Los Angeles. Originally it was going to pass through Topeka, but the route was shortened due to lack of sponsorship. As long time members of the Good Sam Club, the organization that put up the money for his kilometer, Steamboat and Tugboat spend only six to eight weeks of the year at home in Hutchinson. But they train every day no matter where they are. "When we stop at a rest stop, that's when we fo our walking," Steamboat says. The reason for all the training is that Steamboat is determined to waive the exemption for handicapped torch bearers and try to do his kilometer in regulation time. "I think I can make it. If I can't make it in seven minutes they won't put me in jail." Steamboat got his nickname after he was hit in the foot at Anzio and spent a lot of time on sodium pentathol. "I'd be on a binge for two days."he says, During the binges, he'd emit guttural whistles that sounded like a steamboat. It"s a sound so unique that he has a standing offer of five buck to anybody who can match it. Now he files his taxes under the name, and it's on all of his mail. It will be engraved on the torch he carries in Independence. Each runner gets his own torch. Three other Sambassadors like Steamboat are running the torch in other parts of the country. "I think every one of them is past 60," he says. Old enough toknow better. But I think it's a real opportunity. It is sort of floors you." He isn't bothered by the political fussover the torch. The U.S. is using it to raise money for youth clubs, and the Greeks objected to this "commercialization." "I look at it this way," says Steamboat "I've had a scout troop almost 30 years, and if this is going to the Girls clubs and Boys Clubs, hey, whats' the difference? I just feel real humble to make the run." Good Sam members are pledging more money for each step Steamboat and the other Sambassadors take on their legs of the journey. Half of the money will go the the national Dogs for the Deaf organization, and half to the U.S. Olympic track and field committee. The member who pledges the most will get to keep the torch. Steamboat will get to keep the the offical torch relay uniform. Stamboat is ready. He figures neither his age nor his foot is a drawback. Of his age he says, "I'm not over the hill. I'm on top of it. I can see both ways." And of his foot, he says, "It's like any thing else. The only handicap is what you think you are. I say it's not a handicap, it's a disability." The first shot at Anzio hit him in the dog tags. The second hit him in the middle of the foot, splintering the bone. "If I turn my ankle and get a splinter to hat a nerve, that's where I have a problem," Steamboat says. It hurts. It's kinda like a toothache, but you can always pull at tooth. This you can't pull." "Normally, I wear a leg brace below the knee. I can get along withoutit shortly, but not real long." Steamboat will shed the leg brace in Independence, take the 3-pound torch, hold it aloft and become the focus of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games for approximately seven minutes, running on a foot shot up by a World War ll sniper. "We're just a couple little peons out here," he says, nodding to Hazel, "but we're honored in what we're getting to do. We're just fortunate we're even around to be able to do this." Certificate of Baptism This Certifies That Willora Glee Van Osdol was by me Baptized in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost 30th day of April In the year of our Lord Nineteen Hundred and Fifty Signed by George E. Daggett Pastor He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved Mark 16:16 [This was when I was baptized and was dunked under the water in a borrowed baptisery at a church in Los Angeles, California. I was not the only one baptised at that time.] I loved to sing and took a few singing lessons in the 1950s from Florence Ahn Takeuchi. She lived across the street from us when we lived at 5317 Cimmaron, L.A., California. She sang professionally in night clubs and in light opera and musicals. She spent a year in Florida singing one of the main roles in "Flower Drum Song". We kept her daughter Jenniver for the time that she was gone. I sang solos in Church and later was in many church choirs. The church that I grew up in did not have a choir. After I married Calvin I sang in the choir on base at Ft Grealy, Alaska. While I was there we entered a contest among the different chapel choirs on military bases in Alaska. We made a tape of a song that we sang and we won first place in the contest. I also sang at the 2nd Hollywood Presbyterian Church where I was attending when I met Calvin. I sang in girl choruses in High school and Jr. High. I sang in the choir at Tamaqua, Pa., 1st Methodist Church for several years. I sang a solo at my parents 25th wedding anniversary in 1955. Florence Takeuchi held the party at her house. her husband, Joe Takeuchi was a chef and made the meal that was served. I sang two songs. "My Mothers Wedding Day" from Brigadoon and "Because" a love song made famous by Tony Bennett. I still have the music from that time. I sang in the Schuylkill County Chorus for one year. I have programs from the Christmas or Winter program that we preformed at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pottsville, PA. on Dec. 8, 1984 and the Spring Concert at the same location on May 5th 1985. We sang some very difficult music. I cannot read music and sing saprano. Usually I sing the melody because of not being able to read music. The chorus was led by Catherine S. Zimmerman who taught music at Tamaqua Junior High School. For 2 1/2 years, from the fall of 1961 till the early spring of 1964, I sang in the Braille Institute Choir. We sang in many interesting places from nursing homes to the L.A. County Jail. We also went to hospitals to do caroling around Christmas time. I also did some solo work with the choir. It was a wonderful time in my life and I met and became friends with many wonderful people. Our directer was the directer of the Breau of Music for Los Angeles, Mr. Howard Bergan. We traveled all over the L.A. area doing concerts to publish what Braille Institute is doing for the Blind. I appeared in two different plays with other Blind Actors. One was a Christmas play and played a child in it. The other was a mella drama and I played a southern young lady. I have forgotton the names of both of the plays but have pictures of myself in them. I learned to knit and weave at the Institute and modeled some of my weaving in a fashion show that they had. I wove material for a suit and wore it in the show and a apron. I also learned to braid rugs and have made several at the institute and on my own at home. Made wool and cotton braided round and oval rugs. I own three looms and have made many, different things. Here is a list of some the things that I have wove over the years. Rag Rugs, stoles, placemats, all sorts of table runners and scarfs, curtin material, shag throw rugs, wall hangings, purses, mug rugs, afgans, towells and ect. I have won two blue ribbons at fairs for my work. I wove an afgan and won at a fair in Santa Fe Springs in May of 1972. Calvin was in Viet Nam and I and my children were staying with my parents at the time. I also won at the Teller Co. fair in Colorado in Aug. 1981. This time I won for a stole that I had made. What thrilled me is that I was competing against sighted people and I beat them, that sure made me feel good. I have tried to sell my weaving but people do not understand the work that goes into makeing hand woven goods. They think that the prices are two high. Hand weaving is an very old art and is not appreacited in this throw away world. ------Places where we lived that I remember. These were all in Los Angeles, California 1. 7416 Parmelee Ave. 90001-3055. [there was no zip codes when I was a little girl. I learned this zip code later on when looked the address up on the internet.] This was a one bedroom duplex. It had a yard and is the first place that I remember. I was about four years old when we lived there. It was a rented house. It had a small front yard and a nice back yard. My father built a very nice wooden playhouse for me there but had to leave it behind for she said that it was too large and so too hard to move to our next home. 2. Duplex that they bought. We lived on one side and my father's sister Dorothy and her three children lived on the other side. This place is very fuzzy in my mind. We did not live there very long. 3. House that my parents bought at 416 East 119th Street. It was a 2 bedroom house on a large lot. Had a garage and a long driveway that I liked to roller scate on. It had a picket fence around the edge of the property. I got a cat while living there whose name was Boots. It was black with white paws. 4. Daddy lost his job and he was out of work for six months. We moved to a small trailer that sat by the chuch. We slept in the trailer and ate in the church's kitchen. The Church was located on the corner of 30th and Hill St. near downtown LA. It was the 2nd Free Methodist Church. It was very close to downtown LA. Across from the church was John Adams Jr. High. He got a job with Union Pacific Railroad with the help of Art House. Mr. House went to our chuch and worked for the railroad. We then moved to an apartment in a 4 unit building on Olive Street. 2820 So. Olive St. This place was a one bedroom apt. It had a small front and back yard. We lived on the left side of the building on the ground floor. There was a living room, dining room, kitchen and a bedroom. In the dining room and the living were pullout beds that were built in under a china closet in the dining room and under a built in desk and display cabnits in the living room. I slep in the dining room. There was also a back porch where my mother whashed the clothes on a wringer washer. We had a bath room and next to it was a large closet and a dressing room with a built in dressing table. There was a small cubby hole that was under the stairs that went up to the the apt above and I kept all my stuff that I played with in that small closet. I was always rearrangeing it because it was hard to find things in it and was always a mess. I remember once there was a small earth quake and I was in the bed that rolled under the china cabnit. That old bed rolled back and forth like crazy and I wondered if It was going to roll unter the china cabnit with me in it. The plates in the cabnit sure did rattle and dance and I think that a few got broken too. We lived there while I was in the 5th, 6th and 7th grade. Still have many memories associated with that house. My mothers brother Robert would come to stay with us. He arrived unannounced and would stay until he found other living arrangements. He did this more than one time. He liked older women who had some money and would keep him. He was kind of wild and loved to drink and chase the women. It was while living with us that he first saw a lady named Flora Mae Cary Morphew. She lived down the street from us in a apartment building with her husband Dale and small daughter Joyce. My mother met her when she came to the door selling tickets so her daughter could enter a beauty contest for toddlers. My mother said that she would buy two tickets if she would go to church with her on Sunday. They became fast friends and Flora spent a lot of time at our house. Robert had seen her on the bus and he came home and said that he had seen this beautiful lady on the bus and sure would like to be able to meet her. He just got the words out of his mouth and in walked Flora who was the the person that he had seen on the bus. He tried to romance her but she was married and did not want to get involved even though she was attracted to him. Years later Robert caledl our house and wanted her address and phone number. Flora was now divorced and Robert was free too. I refused to give him the information. Flora had enough problems without Robert messing up her life. My mother who was out of the house when her brother called suddenly came home and then she got on the phone with Robert and she gave in and gave him her address and phone number. That was a big mistake. They got together and later were married. It was not a happy marriage. Flora was warned about what she was getting into but she did not listen. They finally divorced. But remained friends until his death. She went to see him and after she left Robert had a stroke and died shortly after wards in the hospital. He was only 59 years old. He was living with another women when he died and she was very jealous of Flora and when she left her and Robert had a big fight and that is was probably brought on the stroke. When we lived on Olive my mother was Penny a Day chairman at church. People who had a birthday would give a penny for every year that they had lived. This would happen during Sunday School. My mother kept the money in a jar in the built in cabnit in the living room. One day that money disappeared. She suspected that Robert had taken it and she later found out that she was right and he never repaid it. It was money that went to missionaries for their support. There was not much money in the jar but to steal from the church and the Lord is pretty low. Robert did not care. My mother had to make up the money. There was not much money in the jar about 3 or 4 dollars but in the early 50s that went further than it does today. In the summer of 1952 we moved to 5317 Cimmaron. Our telephone number at this apartment when I was a teanager was AX 10275.The Church on 30th and Hill sold their building to a business they tore down the church and built a new building on that property. They then bought a church on the corner of 54th and Cimmaron. We rented an apartment accross the street on the second floor above a business. We lived there till after I graducated from High School. My father was the church janitor. We never lived very far from the church. He also was the maintaince man at the church. The place on olive was about 2 short blocks from the church. This apt had two bedrooms. There was no hall in the apt so all the rooms ran in a row one next to the other. It used to be doctor offices. Daddy became the apt manager and rented out the other appartments. There were four apts, ours was the fifth and the largest. The other four were only one room with a large closet, bath and a small kitchen. When my parents adopted June I moved into one of them that was next to ours and it became my bedroom. I got blind aid when I was 16 and so could afford my own little place. This freed up my room for June. I still ate at my parents place. The little apartment rent was $40.00 a month. I had to live on my own to qualifiy for the blind aid. I was not happy moving out of the main living space and felt pushed out so June could have my room. I liked having my own space and bath to myself but still did not like it. I lived in the little apt till I married Buddy Eugene Seeberg Aug 16, 1958. My parents then rented a 2 bedroom place near Englewood CA. After Buddy and I separated I went back to living with them. They lived in a 2 unit building. Whe the unit above them became empty I moved in it. They then bought a house at 10424 Ls Salle. It was near the airport. It had two large bedrooms. But it had a small house on the rear of the property with a very large livingroom, a very small bedroom, [had bunk beds for Donna and I to sleep in] a bathroom with a shower and a kitchen that was long an narrow build of brick. It was a crude kitchen meant for entertaining. It had a covered patio. It was a separate building from the other building with the large living room. My father took old folding doors from the church and made a short hall from one building to the other building. The folding doors had windows in them so the little hall was will lighted during the day. The floor slanted down from the bedroom to the kitchen because one building was highter than the other one. The living room had a large stone fireplace and was covered with knotty pine grooved boards. The lower boards ran cross wise and the upper board went up and own. The room was right behind the detached garage. Daddy rigged a system with a bell in the large house that could be rang in my house and I would pick up the phone and she could tell me what she wanted with out running back to the little house in the back. It saved a lot of running. My phone line was an extension off the main phone line. My mother usually answered the phone in the main house and this way she could let me know I had a phone call. They sold this house about 1962 and bought a house at 11203 Idalene in Santa Fe Springs, CA. I married Calvin while they lived there and the recseption was held at that house. Donna and June spent most of their childhood in that house and went to local schools and both graducated from High School at Santa Fe Springs. Donna in 1975 and June in 1974. Places that I lived after I married Calvin Krapf on 29 Oct 1966. Our first home was a place that we lived for two weeks while waiting for quarters on post at Fort Ord in northern California. It was located about a 2 hr drivesouth of San Franscisco. We had to put our names on a list to get into housing on base. We did not have to wait long. The first little place, off post, only had one bedroom and was very small. Our quarters on post had two bedrooms, a full bath and hardwood floors. A small dining area and a large living room and nice kitchen with a built in dish washer. We got a new washer and dryer and rug for the living room. We also bought us a new bedroom set. Still have it and the single bedroom set that I had when I was single. Allen uses it now in 2004. We only lived there till the end of January 1967. Calvin got orders for Korea. He took a months leave and we took a trip to OK and PA. In PA I met some of his relatives. In OK we visited some of my mother's family. He left for Korea at the end of Feb and I stayed at my parents house in Santa Fe Springs. I then decided to join him in Korea. I got a passport and flew to Seoul, Korea in April of 1967. We stayed in the post visiting quarters till we rented a upstairs apt. from a Korean family. I was only there a couple of months because Calvin was transferred to a post near the DMZ near the border of North Korea. I could not go there. I flew home in June and was carring my first child but was only abt. 2 weeks along. I did not know that I was going to have a baby when I returned to the States. I had a Korean maid and we did a lot of sight seeing around the Seoul. Unbeknowns to me I was exposed to the German Measles while sightseeing and got very sick. I went to the DR on Post but be he did not know what was wrong with me. We stayed in the WMCA of Souel in a nice room till I was well enough to travel home. After I renurned to the States I stayed with my parents and then rented a small apt in Hollywood not far from the Braille Institute. It was located not far from the busy street of Santa Monica Blvd. I was able to attend classes there to give me something to do with my time while waiting for my husband to return to the states. I took weaving and a millinary course. Made a fake fur hat that I still wear in the winter time. There was a Presbyterian church not far from the apartment. I had attended there when I was single when I lived on Normindie. The church was on the corner of Normandie and Santa Monica Blvd. It was Hollywood Frist Presbyterian Church. I moved back with my parents in Santa Fe Springs in Jan of 1968. February 20, 1968 I had Allen Andrew Krapf at the Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital. Calvin came home at the end of Feb 1968 and he had a months leave. He was then moved to Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, GA. We made a long car trip across the southern part of the country with a baby who was about a month old. We first stayed a Ft. Stewart, GA. in visiting quarters till we got quarters in post housing on Hunter. We had a two bedroom attached house. We stayed in GA. till he got orders for Ft. Grealey, Alaska in June of 1969. We traveled across the south to Los Angeles, to visit our families. My parents were in Santa Fe Springs and Calvin's lived in Mission Hills on the far edge of . They were two hours apart from each other when traveling on the freeways. We had bought a small camper van while living in GA and Calvin had mounted a generator on the front of the van. We traveled north and crossed into Canada. In Canada we took the Alcan Highway all the way to Alaska. At that time it was a gravel road and rocks flew all over the place. We had a good trip and we stayed in Alaska for two years at Ft. Greely the American largest post, land wise, in the World. They tested all military equiptment there to see how they worked in the cold conditions. It dropped to 80 below zero one of the winters that we were there. Stacey Robin was born at Basset Army Hospital in Fairbanks on 29 Nov 1969. They did their best not to deliver babies at the dispensory on post so I was sent to Fairbanks to wait for her arrival. I sat there in a special ward for Ft. Greely ladies who were waiting for the birth of their babies to be born. I waited two weeks. Longist two weeks in my life. Allen got very sick while I was gone. He stayed with a couple of different families while I was in the hospital. We returned to the lower 48 in June of 1971. We drove the van back on the Alcan highway again. This time we made a detour and visited Dawson Creek where gold was discovered in 1898 and a very big gold rush took place. We first visited our families in the LA area and then we traveled accross the lower states to Savannah, GA and Hunter Army Airfield. This time we rented a place on the outside of the post. We were only there six months when he got orders for Viet Nam. We again crossed across the lower part of the nation to LA. The children and I stayed for a year with my parents while Calvin was gone. We had traded in the van for a 23 foot motor home. The kids and I slept in the motor home but ate with the family. The motor home was parked in front of the garage at the rear of their home. Calvin was gone from the end of January of 1972 till the end Jan of 1973. He was in the first plane of troops to come home after the peace treaty was signed at the end of 1972. He then was assigned to Ft. Meade, Maryland. This is about an half hour from Washington DC. We would go almost every Friday evening to visit with Calvin's Aunt Grace and Uncle Oscor Mast. It was nice to be stationed near some relatives. We were only there 6 months and then he got orders for Ft. Bliss, Texas in the town of El Paso. He was to attend school for the computer guideance system on the developing Hawk Missle system. The Hawk later became the Patriot missle system after he had retired from the Army. We lived in post housing on Hays Ave. We were there from late August 1972 till June of 1975. He got orders for Korea and was gone from July 1975 till the end of August of 1976. The kids and I again stayed with my parents in Santa Fe. Springs, CA. We had sold the moter home so we stayed in the two spare bedrooms at my parents home. Allen and Stacey slept twin beds in the front of the house and I stayed in the other bedroom and slept on a hide a bed sofa that we brought along. He was stationed near the DMZ in Korea. A full tour of duty in Korea was 13 months. We then returned to Ft. Bliss, Tesas. We bought our first home there at 10324 Omega Circle. We stayed there till he retired at the end of May in 1980. We had bought land in the rocky mountains above Colorado Springs, Colorado at 9000 ft. We moved there and in 1981-82 had a home built on our 2 1/2 acers. In June of 1984 we moved to PA to be near his family. We first lived in Quakake a small village abt 7 miles from Tamaqua. We lived at his parents house and then bought a home two blocks away. We then sold that in 1986 and bought a home and moved on Labor day weekend to 215 Washington St, Tamaqua, PA. We still live there as I write this in May of 2004. I lived in California for 28 years but lived in several places in the LA area and at Ft. Ord with Calvin. I moved all over the states till I came to PA. I have been in this house this coming Labor Day weekend for 18 years the longest I have lived anywhere.

Notes for SFC *CALVIN ANDREW KRAPF, JR.: On Sunday December 7, 1997 Calvin fell 2 stories off a narrow cat walk on the outside of his house, in Tamaqua, while repairing burnt out Christmas light bulbs. This catwalk was built by Calvin a few years earlier when he extended the walls of the kitchen out to the edge of the porch. He placed plywood down and did not put up a railing. In time the plywood rotted and gave way from under one of the legs of the step stool that he was standing on while he was changing the burnt out light bulbs. Allen, his son, saw him fall and called for Glee and ran out to check on Calvin. Glee called 911. Mean while Calvin's heart had stopped beating and he had stopped breathing. When the ambulance arrived they worked on him for about ten minutes and finally got his heart started and him breathing again. Then they rushed him to Miners Memorial Hospital. There they could not do anything for him except hook him up to a resporator and fly him to the Lehigh Valley Hospital in a hellicopter. There they tried to stablize him so they could run some tests on him. On Monday December 8th a catscan was preformed. The test showed that Calvin had crushed cinsus bones. An endocardiogram was also performed lator in the day which showed there was very little brain activity. At 11:00 A.M. , Tuesday December 9, 1998 Stacey called the hospital to find out how Calvin was doing and was told that a test was done to see how much blood was flowing to his brain. This test showed that Calvin had no blood flow to his brain and he was brain dead. He was being kept alive till his family called or showed up at the hospital. On Saturday December 13, 1998 Calvin's funeral was held at Griffiths Funeral Home Tamaqua Pa. He was buried at Odd Fellows Cematery in Frackville. He was creamated and the ashes were buried next to his parents and grant parents on his mothers side. Also down the same row is buried his great grand parents also on his mothers father side. That didn't prevent members of the C.H. Berry Post 173 of the American Legion from staging their own parade. The Tamaqua American Legion color guard received permission to march up Broad Street to commemorate the solemn occasion of Memorial Day. "When it began to rain at 7:30, we said, 'please let up'," said Robert Schuyler, Commander of Legion Post 173. "When it didn't, we decided to march anyway, even if it was sprinkling. After all, they didn't provide rain gear when we served." As the Tamaqua Legion Color Guard marched, an amazing thing happened. A parade materialized. Some 300 people appeared on the sidewalks, either not knowing about the cancellation or undeterred by it. In addition, firemen from Tamaqua's volunteer fire companies, as well as several firetrucks and other appartus, joined in the march. "This thing grew every minute," marveled Ed Sassaman, Commander of the Sons of the American Legion for Post 173. "It was only supposed to be the color guard." The inclement weather forced the community's 130th annual Memorial Day service inside the American Legion hall from its regular outdoor site of Odd Fellows Cemetery on the borough's west end. About 100 people packed the Legion for the service. Jon Zizelmann was master of ceremonies, and the Rev. David Searing, pastor of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tamaqua, provided the invocation and benediction. Kelly Hummel, Tamaqua Area High School senior and Tamaqua BPW Girl of the Year, gave an address on the significance of the poppy for Memorial Day. Tamaqua Mayor Richard Hadesty Sr. was the main speaker. In his address, Hadesty said that a letter was found at the base of one of the panels of the Vietnam War Memorial shortly after it was dedicated. Addressed to "John", the letter had no signature, but read: "Although I only met you on a couple of occasions, you were a hero to me. In your uniform, you were the embodiment of the Army hero to a 7 year-old child. Little did I know that a few months later you would be killed serving your country. Without men like you, we couldn't enjoy the lifestyle that we do. John, you gave your life for us, 21 years old and in your prime. How can we repay you? We will love you and will always remember your sacrifice. You are among the giants of all time." How can we repay John? Hadesty answered, "For those of us who can count ourselves among the fortunate, we can repay by never taking our freedom for granted. With freedom there is responsibility. All of us in our own way must carry part of that responsibility on our shoulders. "Every day in our lives we are in service to our country. If our land or the principles of freedom that we cherish are threatened, we must be ready to do what you have done. We must take up arms and defend her. The ideals of a democratic society are worth protecting. We must be prepared to offer our lives. There is no greater sacrifice or greater cause," added Hadesty. Zizelmann read the roll of deceased veterans since last Memorial Day, which included Robert A. Keilman, William R. Bower, Manuel Sao Paolo, James L. Boyer, John J. Scutta, Howard W. Knepper, Charles J. Barthel, Jacob Rimbach, Arthur Whitley, Robert C. Gallagher, Isadore J. Dominic, Paul G. Lehatto, Myers E. Zimmerman, Robert "Major" Hopple, Charles E. Roeder, Jr., William F. Fredericks, Sr., Michael Turks, John W. Thomas, Barry E. Breiner, William I. Hahn, Edward J. Baddick, Michael Melnick, John F. Orth, Franklin W. Deitrich, Calvin A. Krapf, Earl G. Rusden, Harold R. Derr and William A. Kenpper. The Tamaqua American Legion Color Guard fired a 21-gun salute outside on the post lawn, and "Taps" was played courtesy of the Tamaqua High School Band. The assemblage concluded with "The Star Spangled Banner." ------More About SFC *CALVIN ANDREW KRAPF, JR.: Born [1]: 18 Jun 1933, On a Sunday night at 9:00 P.M. at 302 1/2 Spruce St. Tamaqua, PA. Visit to Greece was the last week of August and first week of September 2003. Written September 2003 I recently returned from a 12-day trip to Greece. I stayed in Patra, the 3rd largest city in Greece, for 7 days, I stayed on the island of Zaginthos for 3 nights, 4 days and I stayed in Athens for 2 nights. I was the maid of honor in a real live big Fat Greek wedding. The groom is from Patra. I stayed in the home of his mother, a wonderful, generous Greek woman named Aspa. She was the perfect hostess, and her two daughters were charming and lovely as well. The people I met were just as emotional as the people in the movie, My Big, Fat Greek wedding. The wedding itself was quite an experience and I could write an entire speech on the preparation and ceremony. The culture shock I experienced is in no way a reflection on any of these people. Here are the top 6 things that exist in Orange County, but do not exist in Greece. 1. An effective sanitation system 2. An effective water purification system 3. Animal Control facilities 4. The adherence to statewide traffic laws and the observance of traffic highway and street lanes 5. The wide variety of food available, in grocery stores and restaurants 6. Non-smoking facilities, designated smoking areas Here are the top 4 factors that contributed greatly to my culture shock. 1. The ability to verbally communicate with at least 90% of those people that you encounter during a typical day. 2. Women regarded as equals in OC, not in Greece (acceptable women are escorted in public, a single woman is frowned upon. Women do all manual labor - cooking and cleaning, men do not do these chores at all) 3. Typical business hours for establishments (9 to 5 in OC, 9 to 12:30 and then 5:30 to 7:30 in Greece). 4. The dinner hour - 5 to 7 for OC, 9 to 11 for Greece. Now I know a good speech really has no more than 3 major points, so I am going to pick three and elaborate. Point #1: The adherence of statewide traffic laws and observance of traffic highway and street lanes. I am a very cautious driver. It is part of my training - living under the close eye of the state highway patrol in Southern California. Before traveling to Greece, both my husband and I obtained international driver's licenses. If you plan to travel to Greece, and are anywhere near a cautious driver - don't bother getting an international driver licenses. In the city, all streets have only 1 lane in each direction. People still park along the streets, along both sides which further reduces available driver space. The Greeks have some very curious customs regarding driving. They seem to make their own imaginary lanes, so it is highly possible at any given time this small one lane becomes 2 lanes. Add to it an abundance of mopeds, scooters and motorcycles, speeding along without caution, to make it three lanes and to me, it is a recipe for disaster. Further, the Greeks seem to have two speeds, stopped and very fast. Everyone tailgates. All Stop signs are optional, so as one approaches an intersection, one simply gives the horn a little toot and keeps on going. Call me crazy, but this seems a little flawed to me. On the highway, the "make your own lane" custom applies as well. In addition, Greeks seem to pass other cars pretty unaware of the state of the oncoming lane. If cars are approaching, the approaching cars seem to swerve to accommodate the oncoming cars. So you can see why driving there is a challenge. If you are already used to driving in an inner city, such as Boston, you will adjust more quickly to these driving customs. I found myself covering my eyes a lot and being very glad that I was ready to meet my maker at any time. Point #2 Non-smoking facilities - not in Greece! It is not an exaggeration to estimate that 85% of the general population throughout Greece smoke cigarettes. The women smoke cigarettes and never let that lit puppy leave their fingertips, this allows them more inhale time and more nicotine in their lungs. The Greeks I observed all seem to have their cigarettes and their cell phone - both seemed equally indispensable. Their telephone systems seem to be top notch, perhaps even better than the U.S. You can smoke everywhere in Greece - beauty salons, restaurants, it I doesn't matter. There are no non-smoking facilities that I could remember. While I enjoy a good cigar from time to time as much as the next person, this constant smoking was quite a contrast to what I am used to in Irvine! Point #3 An effective Sanitation System - without going into much graphic detail, let's just say there are two primary types of toilets in Greece - neither fit your current idea of a normal toilet. If you look at visiting Greece as a good way to strengthen your thigh muscles, that is a positive way to look at it - because you will be doing a lot of squatting. Some Statistics · Geographical location - Greece is located in Southern Europe, bordering the Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea, between Albania and Turkey. · Political disposition - Greece and Turkey have resumed discussions to resolve their complex maritime, air, territorial, and boundary disputes in the Aegean Sea; Cyprus question with Turkey; dispute with The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia over its name. By the way, most Greeks dislike most Turks - Greece and Turkey has a long history together of war and bloodshed. · As a political aside, many of the Greeks I encountered hated American Politics, American affluence and American Power. Further, these same contemplative, resentful fellows seemed to think that Israel and the Jews were behind the 9/11 bombing as well as all workings of our government. Closing travel tips - · If you plan to travel to Greece, remember it is a second world nation. · Enjoy touring the Acropolis and seeing the ancient sites when the weather is mild, spring and fall - I understand. · Enjoy the Greek cuisine - feast on all sorts of meats and fish - all cooked in olive oil, lemon juice, oregano and salt and pepper. Feta cheese pastries are everywhere, if you like that sort of thing. Try the Mousaka, an eggplant/potato lasagna that is delicious. And the lemon chicken soup is the best. There is no brewed coffee, only instant Nescafe. You can get it hot or cold and foamy. Coke Light is the same as Diet Coke.

Try the Fanta citrus soda, it is really good. If you do have a craving for American food, try the Greek hot dog. You will be pleasantly surprised at how good they are. But skip the french fries, they are limp and greasy. · Expect to eat dinner between 9 and 11 at night. · Nightclubs don't get started until midnight and are open all night. · Finally, remember that most businesses (including stores) are closed between 1:30 and 5:30 - then reopen for a couple of hours at 5:30. This is tricky as some businesses close as early at 12 and reopen at 4, others close at 2 and reopen and 6. Cali Spareha!

English 04/29/2005 Interested in getting to know some of this area's most talented young thespians? Consider attending a performance of "The King and I" at Colonial Middle School April 28 to 30 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 per adult and $3 for students under 11. Admission is free for children 5 and under. "The King and I" introduces audiences to King Mongkut, the 19th century Siamese leader who would be "modern," and British teacher Anna Leonowens, who got a lot more than she bargained for when she traveled to Siam - now Thailand - to help the striving monarch achieve his goal. As a middle school music teacher, "The King and I" director Jeff Cooper is no stranger to plot twists or, for that matter, the behind-the-scenes theatrics that sometimes outshine even the flashiest stage diva. In fact, Cooper missed the last night of CMS's 2004 production, "Music Man," when son Calvin Jeffrey, who will mark his first birthday May 11, decided to make his public debut in one area hospital's delivery room. "You do pretty much see it all," admits Cooper, whose nearly-3-year-old daughter, Laura Rose, was born "shortly before we did 'Annie Junior' during my first year at the middle school." The 1988 Plymouth Whitemarsh High School grad had his own starring turn as King Mongkut in 11th grade, sandwiched by successful runs as Tevye from "Fiddler on the Roof" during 10th grade and Billy Bigelow from "Carousel" in 12th grade. Cooper also played trumpet in PW's marching, concert and jazz bands before going on to Indiana University of Pennsylvania. At IUP, he continued to compose music and write lyrics and began singing opera with a voice coach. But he eventually set his sights on a teaching career and earned a bachelor's degree in elementary music education in 1992. He subsequently received a master's degree in psychology from Scranton's Marywood University. Following his IUP graduation, Cooper taught general music and directed student choirs and musicals at J.T. Lambert Intermediate School in Pennsylvania's East Stroudsburg School District for nine years. In his free time, he served as choir director at the area's Reeders United Methodist Church and soloed at various local church concerts. He also performed at the Poconos' Shawnee resort summer concert series. He and wife Stacey moved from East Stroudsburg to Harleysville when he joined the CMS faculty four years ago. Cooper was born in Olean, N.Y., and attended schools in New York and New Jersey before his family - including mother Rose and stepfather Nick Salios - relocated to Plymouth Township in the early 1980s. He completed sixth grade at Plymouth Elementary School, seventh and eighth grades at the then-new CMS. "It was during seventh grade that I got involved in the band program and really began to make some of the friendships that continued through high school," Cooper said. He attributes his earliest interest in music to his mother, who "always had records playing around the house," and older siblings who "played a lot of eight-track tapes" - but also credits the influences connected to his stepfather's pastoral career. "I always sang in our churches' kids' choirs and, if nobody else showed up, I'd be the soloist," Cooper jokes. The family's move to Plymouth was prompted by his stepfather's appointment to chaplaincy posts at Philadelphia Park and Penn National Race Course in Grantville, Pa., and Cooper recalls playing his keyboard at racetrack prayer services and children's holiday parties. "This went on through college," he said. "I remember, one year, chopping down a Christmas tree for my father and then driving home from IUP with the tree, an amp and synthesizer all stuffed into my car ... on my way to the racetrack. "It was different, all right. Out in Grantville, there was a car track nearby and I can still picture myself lugging an amp and synthesizer across the car track to the horse track to set up for Easter sunrise services." These days, Cooper stays busy teaching sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade music classes, directing CMS choirs and overseeing the school's spring musicals. He's also active with the Pennsylvania Music Education Association and the American Choral Directors Association. In his spare time, he plays piano with PW's Alumni Jazz Band, sings in his church choir, directs (and plays trumpet in) the eight-piece church orchestra he organized and continues to compose. With it all: "I really love teaching. Even with the musical, you see so much development in the kids over the four months it takes to put it together. "I think teaching is kind of like a golf game. You're always getting better. Constantly improving your technique. Continually analyzing your game ... the direction you tend to hit the ball, the position of your feet, your swing. And sometimes you accomplish your goal in a few strokes. Other times, it takes eight or nine. But when you connect, there are such great rewards." Tickets to CMS's "The King and I" will be available at the door. The school is at 716 Belvoir Road, adjacent to the Plymouth Township Building in Plymouth Meeting. ------
