Mole Valley Travel to Work Summary Report

Mole Valley as a whole is slightly more popular as a destination than as an origin. The main reason for this difference is due to the fact that there are more people working in Mole Valley with some people from within borough and others coming from the surrounding area. It also relates to the fact that there are a fairly large number of people who live in Mole Valley but who work in the Heathrow and Gatwick areas. The maps of Mole Valley as a workplace destination show that the people working within the district generally originate from there, although there are also people originating from the surrounding boroughs and districts, especially those places along the Mole Valley boundary. When Mole Valley is viewed as an origin, it can be seen that there are a large number of people who work within the district, although there are also a significant number of people who work outside the district especially in the Gatwick and Heathrow airport regions. The maps that show Mole Valley as a destination and origin for car drivers look slightly different, with the more local destinations being slightly less popular than the more distant destinations.

Ashtead is more popular as an origin that as a destination. Those working in originate mostly from within the neighbouring area, with relatively few people travelling there from either the south of the Mole Valley or from neighbouring boroughs and districts. Those for whom Ashtead is the origin work in a much wider variety of places, although a large proportion work within the area surrounding the town (mostly in a 7 mile radius) there are also significant numbers working at the airports and in the area. The results for car drivers are very similar in terms of distribution although unsurprisingly there are more people coming from and going to a greater distance by car than when all modes are considered.

The situation in Bookham and is very similar to that in Ashtead, presumably due to the fact that they are similarly sized areas with similar numbers of workplaces. People working within the towns generally travel a fairly short distance, with a few of those using cars coming from a greater distance. Those originating in Bookham and Fetcham work mainly locally, although there are more people working in Elmbridge and also in Guildford compared to those from Ashtead, and again the airport regions are popular destinations. There are not many differences when only cars are considered, although there appear to be more people travelling a greater distance to work.

The statistics for show that it is much more popular as a destination than as an origin with nearly four times as many people travelling by car to the town than travel from the town. Those working in Leatherhead come mainly from within the northern part of the district, a lesser number from the south of the district and a few from other parts of the county. Those travelling by car come from similar but less concentrated areas. Those originating in Leatherhead mostly work in Leatherhead and the surrounding area, with and the airport regions also being popular destinations.

Dorking, like Leatherhead, has a higher number of people who travel to Dorking as opposed to originating there. With Dorking being fairly centrally located in the district, most of the people travel from within the district to work in the town. As an origin most people stay within the Dorking area to work, with Leatherhead and Gatwick also being popular workplace destinations, followed by Heathrow, Guildford and a number of smaller places along the district boundary. In the case of Dorking about twice as many people travel there to work as travel from the town as an origin. The local workforce population is therefore likely to be much larger than the residential population of the town.

Overall, journeys by car tend to make up most of those that are longer journeys, while other methods of travel show the town centres as popular places to work that are often local to the members of staff. For all the towns considered is a fairly popular origin and destination which can be seen from the summary data table.

The areas within the summary data table either represent a Surrey borough or district, a neighbouring London borough or county, followed by other regions of the country. The neighbouring boroughs of and Banstead and and Ewell are the most popular origins and destinations in the north after Mole Valley itself, with being a popular origin and destinations to the south of the District. London and Guildford are the next most popular places, although those travelling to and from London are not shown on the maps as stated above.

APPENDIX 2b - Travel to Work Study Report and Update Report

Hi Jane,

I've gone through and checked all the data again as you're right, the maps didn't seem to quite correspond with the data in the table. All the maps had the correct data, it was the table that had incomplete data so ignore that last one I sent you - I have attached a new summary table with the correct data.

In answer to your points:

1. It is true that 49.6% of Mole Valley's total workplace population also lives in Mole Valley (36.5% if car drivers only). The reason why the map looks more self-contained is because a lot of the OA's are very small, particularly in the urban areas such as Epsom, Reigate, Redhill, Horley etc whereas in Mole Valley they are a lot larger on the whole due to the more rural nature of the district. This means that although there are more orange and red areas in Mole Valley, in terms of number of OA's there are not as many, meaning that in the districts such as Epsom & Ewell and Reigate & Banstead, a lot of smaller numbers add up to equal less larger numbers.

2. In answer to your question about the 'red' areas - I have attached two updated maps in which I changed the categories so that now there are 100-200 and 200+ categories to make it clearer where the real peaks are. I have also included a list of all the areas which have over 200 (for total people) and over 100 (for car drivers only) so it will hopefully help you to see exactly where people are going.

3. In terms of 'central' London, I used all the boroughs that fall under 'inner' London. There are 3882 people that travel from Mole Valley to work in one of these boroughs and 879 of these drive (22.6%). So yes, the majority do travel by train.

I hope that all makes sense - any further questions please give me a call,

Kind Regards,

Louise
