Earthquake Response: Lamjung HRRP and Shelter Cluster Gandaki Province Situation Report No. 3 (as of May 30, 2021)

This report is produced by Housing Recovery and Reconstruction Platform (HRRP) and Shelter Cluster Nepal, Gandaki Province in collaboration with partners. It covers the situation of Lamjung and neighbouring districts after the jolt of the earthquake and subsequent aftershocks in the morning of May 30, 2021.

Highlights

1. The District Administration Office (DAO) in Lamjung is distributing relief items to the affected population in close coordination with the municipalities and ward representatives.

2. Relief and response activities are ongoing with a one door policy through DAO in close coordination with Municipalities and Rural Municipalities.

3. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), World vision/RCDC, Namaste Kid Neal, Cottage and small Industries Federation, NRCS, CRS Nepal, LWR/USAID/COPPADES, Kopila Nepal are currently providing relief assistance to the 975 affected families.

4. The affected families in , Dordi and Marsyangdi have received relief assistance whereas and Municipality are yet to receive relief assistance.

5. 957 HHs out of 2108 HHs people have received relief materials. 50 HHs are living in tents and 189 HHs are living in community buildings and their relatives out of a total239 HHs.

6. 411 houses are fully damaged and 1697 houses partially damaged in Lamjung, Tanahun and Kaski districts of Gandaki Province.

Situation Overview On 19 May 2021, Wednesday at 5:42 AM local time, the earthquake measuring 5.8M followed by subsequent aftershocks of 4M at 8:16 AM and 5.3M at 8:26 AM, hit of Gandaki Province in Nepal as per the Seismological data. According to the preliminary source of information from local governments, 6 people were injured; 411 houses were fully damaged and 1697 houses were partially damaged. The initial assessment of the loss and damage is ongoing by the local governments. The approaching monsoon is likely to impact on the livelihoods and access to basic services for these affected households impacted by this earthquake. People panicked and rushed out of their homes as they felt the tremor. Most of the people were seen in the open spaces and roads after the earthquake.

The impact of this earthquake was felt heavily in and around the epicenter of Lamjung district including the neighbouring districts Kaski and Tanahu with weak shaking reaching as far as Kathmandu City, the capital of Nepal, 121 km from the epicenter. This earthquake comes at a time when Nepal is still in the process of recovery and reconstruction, almost approaching the end of the given tenure of National Reconstruction Authority (NRA), mandated to Nepal’s post earthquake recovery and reconstruction from 2015 Nepal earthquake.

Current Needs and Priorities • 1,151 affected households require urgent and immediate relief support in terms of Shelter and Non-Food Items. • 200 displaced HHs are staying at community buildings or with relatives during this Covid-19 pandemic period. • Immediate response and relief process to be prioritized with inclusive and protective distribution and technical support. • 1,972 IEC materials for safe use of shelter and NFI kits, safe construction of temporary shelters are required to convey knowledge and raise awareness at community level. • Technical orientation for technical staff for damage assessment/data collection before starting shelter assessment at community level.
