HELLENIC U16 7s RUGBY KERSHAW CUP AND DAIRIBORD FESTIVAL

GROUP STAGES Game 1 We were placed in group A which had St Johns College, Prince Edward School and Wise Owl. We kicked off against our local rivals, St Johns College and made our intentions crystal clear that we intended to take the cup home. The rams kicked to us and we gratefully received and wasted no time shipping the ball to the line and a good run by captain E Chitengwa resulted in a converted try between the posts. Moments later another fine run down the right wing by M Nyamakura resulted in an- other try. In no time the score surged to 17-0 but a lapse in defence enabled the green blazers to score a converted try. We went to the breather leading 17-7. Two more converted tries by the industrious T Lusiyano and Chitengwa sealed the match. Even though Johns managed another unconverted try, it was too little too late. Try scorers: E. Chitengwa (2), T Lusiyano and M Nyamakura. Final score Saints 31 Johns 12.

Game 2 Prince Edward must have watched our demolition of Johns because they threw everything at us, determined not to suffer the same fate. Indeed we started off on the back foot but we soaked up the pressure and once again the illustrious captain E Chitengwa picked a loose ball and darted for the try line. Converting proved elusive, P.E. were quicker and more solid in breakdowns. An ever alert Kelton Kaseke intercepted a P.E. pass and outpaced the rivals defence to the try line. Once again con- version let us down. Half time scores stood at 10-0. The second half was pretty much a repeat of the first half. A P.E. right winger almost reduced the arrears but he had to contend with T Mabukwa who chased and brought him down inches from the try line. Our defence held on until the final whistle. Try scorers: E. Chitengwa and Kelton Kaseke. Final score Saints 10 P.E. 0

Game 3 Against Wise Owl, it was one-way traffic, the opposition simply had no answer to the marauding dragons. Tries started from kick off up to the end of the match. Four tries each half and all but one converted had the score board reading 52-5 when the referee blew the final whistle. It is amazing that Wise Owl managed a try, we must have fallen asleep thinking they were dead and buried. Try scorers: E. Chitengwa (2), T Changunda, T Mabukwa, T Lusiyano, Kelton Kaseke, M Nyamakura and B Nhekairo. Final score Saints 52 Wise Owl 5 We ended top in our group and were to meet the number 2 in group B

Semi-final We had to wait for more than an hour to meet Lomagundi who had finished second in group B. Eventually the battle started and the boys in green drew first blood scoring an unconverted try. This was a slap in the face as the dragons made sure that was the only try the opposition would score. So incensed were the boys in red that they ran seven tries past the hapless boys from . Three tries, two of them converted in the first half had the half time score at 19-5. Four more converted tries in the second half made sure we advanced to the finals. Try scorers: B Nhekairo, E Chitengwa (4), T Magodora, Kelton Kaseke (2), Final score Saints 47 Lomagundi 5 In the other semi-final between Peterhouse and P.E. the match went into sudden death after Peterhouse equalised in full time to leave the score 19-19. Peterhouse scored first in the sudden death and booked a place in the finals against the dragons.

The Final This is what everyone had been waiting for. Peterhouse coaches had done their homework and the instruction to their team was simple, shut down Saints danger men, hit hard and counter attack. Soon enough they were leading 7-0 just after 2 minutes of play. They tackled hard and T Lusiyano was soon carried off with a concussion, we had to dig deep to equalise. Peterhouse scored another unconverted try and that was a costly error they would live to regret. Saints rallied and showed why they are the dragons, the captain E Chitengwa was unstoppable as he raced against the House defence to dot between the posts. Converting that try proved to be the difference between the winners and runner-up under floodlights that evening. So brutal was the encounter that almost all Chitengwa’s men were limping as they lined up to shake hands with the opposition. The captain was barely able to stand as he was handed the Kershaw Cup. Try scorers: E Chitengwa and K Kaseke Final score Sainits 14 Peterhouse 12

DAIRIBORD FESTIVAL AT PRINCE EDWARD SCHOOL Vs Churchill 30/04/19 Play started off quite scrappy, without much structures, it was a case of the boys playing to the opposition type of play. For the first 10 minutes the team was unrecog- nisable as they made basic handling errors. Churchill were awarded a penalty in our 22 and they went for posts. We regrouped and began to play our usual game and not surprisingly we were soon awarded a penalty in the opposition 22. B Nhekairo went for posts and easily converted to level the score. Soon E Chitengwa ran through the Churchill defence and dotted but was adjudged to have dropped the ball. Moments later he made amends and this time made sure, half-time score stood at 10-3. We started the second half from where we left off and Chitengwa playing 8th man collected the ball from our scrum deep in the puppies half. He made his legendary run and touched down between the posts. Nhekairo had the easiest of tasks converting. The backline players marshalled by Nhekairo were once again displaying quick hands down the line much to the delight of the spectators. These sublime moves soon culminated in two more tries by T Matimbira and Kelvin Kaseke. Nhekairo com- peted his 100% conversion rate of the day. Churchill never knew what hit them. T Matimbira who played a game of his life was justifiably awarded the man of the match Try scorers: E Chitengwa (x2), T Matimbira and Kelvin Kaseke. Final score Saints 31 Churchill 3

Vs Lomagundi 02/05/19 Five minutes into the game we won the ball from Lomagundi line out. The ball was shipped to the line and Kelton Kaseke playing left wing outpaced the opposition defence to score a converted try between the posts. E Chitengwa was at it again, we were awarded a scrum in the Lomagundi half and after winning the ball, Chi- tengwa played his beloved eighth man move and went for gold. B Nhekairo was equal to the task with the boot. We allowed the Lomagundi forwards to have their way and we conceded a penalty in our 22, waves of attack by the opposition forwards forced us to concede a penalty. Sustained pressure resulted in an unconverted try by the boys from Chinhoyi. Another eighth man move from our scrum by Chitengwa saw him offload to Kelvin Kaseke playing on the right wing. The later weaved his way to the try line and Nhekairo obliged with the boot. Half-time score read 21-5. The second half produced two more unconverted tries by Kelton Kaseke and G Vere before Lomagundi replied in an exact replica of their first try. However, Chi- tengwa had the last say, dotting in the corner from our lineout. We were so good in line outs that we won all our lineouts and most of the opponent’s lineouts. Nhekairo got the man of the match award. Try scorers Kelton Kaseke (x2), Kelvin Kaseke, E Chitengwa (x2) and G Vere. Final score: Saints 36 Lomagundi 10

Vs Kyle College 04/06/19 The boys showed a lot of character, remaining unfazed after a lot of controversial decisions against us. It appeared as if we could do nothing right, every time we touched the ball or contested the whistle blew and we had to retreat back ten. However, as the saying goes, you can’t keep a good man down. We scored five tries in each half with a 60% conversion rate. Kelton Kaseke opened the floodgates after quick hands down the line. T Lusiyano soon followed suit from a similar move. Third try was a spirited run by M Nyamakura down the middle splitting the opposition defence. Good hands by the backline players resulted in Magodora and Lusiyano with a try a piece before the breather and the score at 31-0. The second half produced a similar score line and it was lusiyano, Kelvin Kaseke, Mashoko and Z Simumba. To cap a fine afternoon performance, Lusiyano clinched the man of the match award. So outplayed was Kyle that they never threatened our try line let alone register a single try. To save them from further embarrassment, the referee blew to end the match with more than 5 minutes remaining on the clock. Try scores: Kelton Kaseke, T Lusiyano (x3), T Magodora, Kelvin Kaseke(x2), M Nyamakura, M Mashoko and Z Simumba. Final score: Saints 62 Kyle College 0 B Nhekairo and K Guta were selected to be part of the Dairibord U16 all-star XV made up of selected players from all the schools that participated at the festival. In addition, Nhekairo was awarded the U16 player of the tournament.
