To experience some of the country’s most beautiful and scenic sights was a memorable experience. Each side of the well maintained road was filled with attractive grasses and the exquisite multi-hued beauty of the indigenous trees made the flora, or epoch, a breath-taking sight. We were greeted by at least thirty girls and boys although we were playing the boys only. The eleven St George’s participants were spoilt to play in a large, well built building which could cater for seven table tennis tables, although we only used five of them. We were very envious of their facilities. The boys played superbly and we came away feeling very jubilant with a win of 10-1. Although play was competitive our boys proved their skill and that their play was a cut above. Schools present were; Peterhouse, Christian Brothers College, Bernard Mzeki College, St John’s Col- lege, Cherutombo, St George’s College, St John’s High School, Prince Edward, Churchill, Marondera High and Kutama College. All schools had B teams and as a result all teams were split into 3 pools with pool A hosting the top teams of each school. Any thoughts that St George’s boys would be nervous were quickly dispelled by a successive hammering of Peterhouse, CBC, BMC and St John’s College in the first round, winning 2-0 in all their matches. In the other pools, Cherutombo A and B were demonstrating their much feared attaching prowess by wiping every other team. In the Quarter Finals, St George’s clinically dismissed Cherutombo B with amazing passing and hitting moves. Genius Mbambu of St George’s was attacking fiercely from all corners, and the score ended 2-0 in favour of St George’s. Big surprise was St George’s went on to face the much feared Cherutombo A team in the Semi Finals. This was undoubtedly the match of the tournament and all other games were briefly stopped. By this time it was to everyone’s expectation that the winners of this semi will obviously win the final against Peterhouse or BMC. However, Cherutombo attacking boys had no answer for Isheanesu Mauchi of St George’s who was blocking each and every attacking attempt. The super serves from Honour Mukushi of St George’s proved difficult to return and the combined team effort was spectac- ular right to the end. St George’s College won 2-1. The final was greeted with aching muscles and the air of underlying, electric excitement and anticipation. It was, to everyone’s delight, a storybook ending for St George’s College who trounced an already panic stricken BMC team in the Tournament Final. The game ended before it even started and Genius Mbambu and Isheanesu Mauchi were named Most Valuable Player and Best Blocker of the tournament respectively. Final score 2-1. After the game, Saints Volleyball T.I.C, Mr. Maposa was lost for words but he managed to say “that was a very pleasing result and probably the best we have had in a long time. I am proud of the whole team”.
