Junjie, on the Chinese New Year‟s Eve, 27 Jan., 2017 Abstract A study on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in the context of tourism is needed not only to resolve practical problems in heritage management, but also to further the development of theory in the field of heritage studies and heritage tourism. While studies on ICH have been burgeoning in recent years, little research has been done in relation to the safeguarding of ICH in the context of tourism. This is particularly so with regard to the applicability of key theoretical concepts in heritage studies, namely authenticity and integrity. My thesis is that these need to be rethought and reconceptualised in relation to ICH safeguarding. I will advance my arguments through a case study of ICH practices and their management in Lijiang, located in Yunnan Province, China. Here the indigenous ICH is rich and heritage tourism development is mature. Most commentators interpret this place as an example par excellence of the tension between “authentic protection of ICH” and “use of ICH in commodification”. I argue, however, that this tension is in itself a reflection of two points of difference within the Chinese ICH system. The first is between the Chinese official ICH discourse and UNESCO ICH discourse. The second is between these “official discourses” and the “cultural practice” engaged by the ICH practitioners on the ground in Lijiang. I use these findings to argue that the understanding of the local ICH practitioners is central to the resolution of the tension between the protection and the use of ICH. Methodologically, the research draws on the Critical Heritage Studies approach and the emic perspective in experimental ethnography. I use these to propose an innovative inheritors-based emic perspective to reveal, analyse and privilege the understandings of the local ICH practitioners of four types of ICH in Lijiang, namely Dongba culture, traditional music, handicrafts and traditional food making skills, which I then contrast with the perspectives of the officials (at national, provincial, municipal and county levels) and the experts (both non-local and local experts). Given the way in which the officials and experts have interpreted the relationship between authenticity and commodification as one of tension between the two, I deliberately studied two forms of ICH: the less-commodified practice in the community and the more-commodified practice in the tourism market. Students move from computer simulations to physical renderings, to repurposing STEM innovation and discovery in the service of Indigenous community development. We begin with the math and computing ideas in traditional Anishinaabe arcs; describe their translation into software and physical rendering techniques, and fnally their workshop implementation with a mix of Native and non-Native students. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of pre-survey and post-survey data indicate increases in students’ understanding of Indigenous knowledge, their creative ability to utilize it in moving from algorithmic to physical designs, and their visions for new hybrid forms of Indigenous futu- rity. We use these fndings to argue that culture-based education needs to shift from a vin- dicationist mode of admiring ancient achievements, to one that highlights students’ agency in a generative relationship with cultural knowledge.     FOMBANDRAZANA VEZO: ETHNIC IDENTITY AND SUBSISTENCE STRATEGIES AMONG COASTAL FISHERS OF WESTERN MADAGASCAR by EARL FURMAN SANDERS (Under the Direction of THEODORE GRAGSON) ABSTRACT The complex dynamic among coastal peoples of western Madagascar involves spread of cultural elements due to extensive seasonal migrations, tribes and ethnic groups merging into progressively broader ethnic groups, distinctions based on interethnic and intra-ethnic boundaries, and lumping of peoples with remotely similar subsistence patterns which has perpetuated ethnonym vagaries. This study analyzes the cultural bases of the Vezo, a group of marine fishers inhabiting the west coast of Madagascar, with the intent of presenting a clearer image of what is entailed within the ethnonym, Vezo, both with respect to subsistence strategies and cultural identity. Three broad areas of inquiry, ethnohistory, ecological niche as understood from the Eltonian definition, and geographical scope inform the field research. Access to these areas leans heavily on oral histories, which in turn is greatly facilitated by intensive participant observation and work in the native language. The analysis shows that the Vezo constitute a distinct ethnic group composed of diverse named patrilineal descent groups. This ethnic group is defined by common origins and a shared sense of common history, which along with the origins of the taboos are maintained within their oral histories. Within the ethnonym, Vezo, there are subsistence as well as other cultural distinctions, most notably the taboos. These distinctions are the bases of the ethnic boundaries separating those who belong to the Vezo cultural group and others who are referred to as Vezo (Vezom-potake and Vezo-loatse) due to geographical disposition.

The defining characteristic of the far-right for this paper is: A narrative of racial and/or cultural threat to a ‘native’ group arising from perceived alien groups within a society. This is considered a working definition intended to bound this paper only, this should not be treated as comprehensive.1 This paper focuses on the far-right in the United Kingdom. However, far-right activism is transnational, and so it has not been possible to limit this research exclusively to the UK, nor can the UK far-right be considered in isolation from the wider far-right (Zúquete 2015). The far-right is not composed only of discrete and easily identifiable groups. While various organisations are components of the far-right, including gangs, protest movements, pressure groups, and political parties, the far-right as a whole is amorphous. Its messiness is inherent, stemming from a diverse range of ideologies and narratives enacted over a wide range of geographic contexts by multiple actors. Adding to this, digital technology has allowed an already complex patchwork of groups, influencers and activists to diffuse further through multiple and sometimes overlapping presences on an array of digital platforms.

Abstract Folk sports are the countertype of modern sports: invented traditions, bolstered by tangible ritual and intangible myth, played by the common folk in order to express a romantic ethnic identity. Like other cultural forms, traditional sports and games around the world are becoming marginalized in the face of modernization and globalization. In 2003, UNESCO ratified the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in an attempt to counter such trends of cultural homogenization. As elements of intangible cultural heritage, folk sports now fall under the auspices of UNESCO safeguarding policies.

The research questions are who are slandered, why are the targets slandered, and how. The answering of the questions will primarily rely on textual studies, accompanied by an exploration of the tradition of “slandering” in the literati’s world, as well as a look at Luo Yin’s career and experience as a persistent imperial exam taker. The project will advance accordingly: In the introduction, I will examine the concept of “slandering” in terms of how the Chinese literati associate themselves with it and the implications of slandering or being slandered. Also, I will try to explain how Luo Yin fits into the picture. Chapter two will focus on the studies of the historical background of the mid-to-late Tang period and the themes of the essays. Specifically, it will spell out the individuals, the group of people, and the political and social phenomenon slandered in the essays.

Using Critical Discourse Analysis, this project looks to manifesto texts produced by mass killers between the years 2011 and 2019 (beginning with Anders Breivik and ending with Brenton Tarrant). It breaks the alt-right down into two central constituent groups: ‘White Replacement’ discourse, articulating fear of white extinction, and ‘Red Pill’ discourse, articulating belief in an experience of subordinated/oppressive non-hegemonic masculinity. Through tracing these two main subject from the manifesto genre through to web forums, social media, historical documents, news broadcasts, and political speeches, the author weaves a proposed network of alt-right discourse. This leads to an understanding of ideology that closely links belief and knowledge with affect and emotion.

  • Nation, Ethnicity and Race on Russian Television
    Nation, Ethnicity and Race on Russian Television Russia, one of the most ethno-culturally diverse countries in the world, provides a rich case study on how globalization and associated international trends are disrupting and causing the radical rethinking of approaches to inter-ethnic cohe- sion. The book highlights the importance of television broadcasting in shaping national discourse and the place of ethno-cultural diversity within it. It argues that television’s role here has been reinforced, rather than diminished, by the rise of new media technologies. Through an analysis of a wide range of news and other television programmes, the book shows how the covert meanings of discourse on a particular issue can diverge from the overt significance attributed to it, just as the impact of that dis- course may not conform with the original aims of the broadcasters. The book discusses the tension between the imperative to maintain security through cen- tralized government and overall national cohesion that Russia shares with other European states, and the need to remain sensitive to, and to accommodate, the needs and perspectives of ethnic minorities and labour migrants. It compares the increasingly isolationist popular ethno-nationalism in Russia, which harks back to ‘old-fashioned’ values, with the similar rise of the Tea Party in the United States and the UK Independence Party in Britain. Throughout, this extremely rich, well-argued book complicates and challenges received wisdom on Russia’s recent descent into authoritarianism. It points to a regime struggling to negotiate the dilemmas it faces, given its Soviet legacy of ethnic particularism, weak civil society, large native Muslim population and over- bearing, yet far from entirely effective, state control of the media.
