Mapping of Cultural Heritage actions in European Union policies, programmes and activities Last update: April 2017 This mapping exercise aims to contribute to the development of a strategic approach to the preservation and valorisation of European heritage. It responds to the "Conclusions on cultural heritage as a strategic resource for a sustainable Europe" adopted by the Council of the European Union on 20th May 2014, and complements the European Commission Communication "Towards an integrated approach to cultural heritage for Europe", published on 22 July 2014. The document provides a wide (but not exhaustive) range of useful information about recent policy initiatives and support actions undertaken by the European Union in the field of cultural heritage. European Commission - Information Society projects DM2E: Digitised Manuscripts to Europeana Project ID card The projects aims to technically enable as many content providers as possible to integrate Funded under: The their content into Europeana. Since different providers make their data available in different Information and formats, a tool has to be developed that converts metadata from a diverse range of source Communication formats into the EDM (Europeana Data Model). During the project, this will exemplarily be Technologies Policy Support done for the autograph database Kalliope (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin), the German text archive Programme Deutsches Textarchiv (Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften), as well as Area: CIP-ICT-PSP.2011.2.1 content of the Austrian national library (Österreichische Nationalbibliothek) plus a number of - Aggregating content in other sources. Metadata providers are strongly encouraged to make their data available under Europeana CC0, as all other licenses hamper further use by Europeana and scholars. Finally, Europeana is going to provide the aggregated data in a form which allows Digital Humanities scholars to Total cost: €2.62m make best use of them. In addition, basic services / functionalities (modeled on the humanities' EU contribution: €2.10m “scholarly primitives”) will be provided by Europeana. In this perspective, the proposed project is in line with theme 2 of the call (Digital Content) and targets its objective 2.1 (Aggregating Project reference: 297274 content in Europeana). -

EUROPEAN UNION Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Lebanon Beirut, 6 December 2012 Press Release The EU celebrates the awarding of the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize with Lebanese youth On the occasion of the awarding of the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union and to celebrate International and European Human Rights Day, the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon and the Lebanese University are organising a panel debate on the topic of "Peace and Reconciliation". The event will take place on Monday 10 December at the Lebanese University Central Administration in presence of Ambassadors of the EU Member States, representatives of the Justice and Human Rights Parliamentary Committees, students and academics, civil society and media. The Nobel Prize Committee has decided to award the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union for over six decades' contribution to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe. The award ceremony takes place in Oslo on 10 December, where the President of the European Council Herman Von Rompuy, the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso and the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz will receive the prize. Four young Europeans, winners of the online contest on the subject of "Peace" organised by the European Union, will be joining the delegation of the EU in Oslo to collect the award. The European Union will give the award money (€930 000) to projects supporting children who are victims of war and conflicts. The Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon has also chosen to engage with youth to celebrate the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize. -

UNESCO HERITAGE SITES AND CULTURAL SPACES IN Ethnographic Regions of ESTONIA - Setomaa, Kihnu Island, LATVIA - Suiti Land, Livonian Coast, and SOUTH COAST OF FINLAND PROGRAMMES FOR TOURISTS The north-eastern shores of Baltic Sea washes three states – Finland, Estonia and Latvia. For centuries these countries have shared common cultural landscape, exchanged and mutually enriched one another’s culture. The way of life in this region characterized by shared cultural context, values and natural resources has developed traditions specific to each nation yet keeping common Nordic-Baltic spirit in every cultural expression. For this reason it is worthwhile taking a closer look into the region finding out what heritage values it has to offer, and which of them are internationally recognized by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) an organisation which works to promote and safeguard the heritage of humanity. 1 2 What is UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage? One of the most beautiful UNESCO developed lists of this kind is devoted to promotion of intangible cultural heritage. Ph.: +49 (0) 345 2927 0; Fax: +49 (0) 345 2927 502; E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In this article, various aspects of engagement with the past and with heritage are explored in the context of Grybija village in southern Lithuania. The village in question is a heritage site within an "ethnographic villages" programme, which was initiated by the Soviet state and continued by Independent Lithuania after 1990. The article thus looks at the ideological aspects of heritage as well as its practical implications to Grybija's inhabitants. Moreover, local ideas about private property, righteous ownership and entitlement are explored in their complexity and in relation to the heritage project. Since much of the preserved heritage in the village is private property, various restrictions and prohibitions are imposed on local residents, which are deemed as neither righteous nor effective by many locals. In the meantime, the discourse of the "ethnographic villages" project exotifies and distances the village and its inhabitants, constructing an "Other" that is both admired and alienated. Keywords: heritage site, private property, Lithuania. The fieldsite Grybija is a small village in the far South of Lithuania, Dzūkija region. There are around 50 permanent inhabitants and another dozen or so who stay for the summer, plus weekend visitors.1 The village is in the territory of Dzūkijos National Park which was established in order to protect the landscape as well as natural and cultural monuments of the region. -

It has produced the need for a computing workforce, and increasingly, diversity is becoming an integral aspect of that workforce. Today, educational outreach programs with ICT components that are extending education to Indigenous communities in BC are charting a new direction in crossing the cultural barrier in education by tailoring their curricula to distinct Indigenous cultures, commonly within broader science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) initiatives. These efforts require examination, as they integrate Indigenous cultural material and guidance into what has been a largely Euro-Western-centric domain of education. Postcolonial computing theory provides a lens through which this integration can be investigated, connecting technological development and education disciplines within the parallel goals of cross-cultural, cross-colonial humanitarian development.
