W hen the smoke over Copenhagen dispersed after the violent attacks by the British in 1801 and 1807, the Kingdom of De ti ni ark went bankmpt and inas immediately afterwards obliged to cede to the Swedes. So was an impoverished and bruised nation whose condition did nőt appear to leave much room fór a grand display o f the árts and Sciences. However, it is precisely in this area that the little miraeíe o f the Danish Golden Age is to be found. Fór despite stich highly unpropitious circumstances, the years between 1800 and 1850 were able to muster a large array o f artísts whose works have achieved lasting significance and internatiónal recognitioh.

The Danish Golden Age was the period during which wrote his ftmousfairy tales,Angust Bournon- ville created his romantic ballets, and Gade and Hartmann wrote the music which is now again being recorded. The o f achieved world-wide fame already during his lifetime, and Sorén Kierkegaard's existential philosophy has influenced thinking from the Golden Age right up to the present day. The visual árts rose to new heights thanks to the pictures o f Eckersberg and Kobke, and the architect Christian Frederik Fiamén designed and built the beautiful, neo-classical buildings that are still among the hallmarks of the modern city of Copenhagen. A n d in addition to these, countless other artists were at work in the city, contributing to making the Copenhagen of the Golden Age an artistic• melting pót in which artists and writers inspired and criticised each other.

Golden Days in Copenhagen presents somé of the most out- standing creations of a remarkable period of history, and it is a great pleasure to be able to welcome you to the many events on offer in the city during the Festival. COPENHAGEN - THE CITY AND ITS ARCHITECTURE
