Min karriere lå lige for – kunsten gik tidligt i blodet på mig! Meget er sket siden dengang, hvor auktionshuset kun beskæftigede godt 10 medarbejdere. I dag har vi udvidet med to afdelinger i Københavns Nordhavn og en i Aarhus og har 100 medarbejdere ansat. Dengang solgte vi stort set kun ældre malerier og antikviteter, mens auktionerne i dag også om- fatter moderne- og nutidskunst, smykker, design, bøger, frimærker, mønter, vin og våben. En af de største fornyelser i auktionshusets historie er net-auktionerne, som blev lanceret i 2004 som supplement til auktionerne i Bredgade. I dag sælger vi op mod 80.000 effekter årligt gennem de to salgskanaler. Elfenbenshammeren er imidlertid den samme som dengang! Og jeg er til stadig- hed optaget af at lade den falde over de bedste ting. Hver auktion er som at åbne en kiste med nye skatte, der er på gennemrejse i vores virksomhed. Når hammeren falder, skifter de ejere. Mange havner i private hjem eller hos handlende, men også adskillige danske og udenlandske museer har gennem årene kunne berige deres samlinger med køb fra Bruun Rasmussen. Man kan sige, at vi formidler genbrug på et højt plan! Nu glæder jeg mig til at fejre mine 50 år i auktionsbranchen med denne store jubilæumsauktion, hvor omkring 1.500 kunstgenstande kommer under hammeren. De præsenteres denne gang i hele tre kataloger. I det første katalog ”Udvalgt af Jesper Bruun Rasmussen” har jeg håndplukket nogle af de 90 betydeligste ældre og nyere malerier og enkelte bemalede keramiske effekter samt bøger. Anden del omfatter ældre kunst og antikviteter, kinesisk kunstindustri samt smykker og armbåndsure. Tredje del er kataloget over de moderne effekter – malerier, grafik, kunstindustri, møbler og design. Auktionens højdepunkter fra nærværende katalog tæller blandt andet den danske guldalders nestor C.W. Eckersberg og et romersk prospekt, som han udførte på stedet (kat.nr. 12). Værket ledsages af kunstnerens tegning af samme lokalitet. Blandt de mange værker af P.S. Krøyer skal fremhæves et fra en amerikansk samling der viser to vandglade drenge i den blå time på Skagen Strand (kat.nr. 20). Paul Fischer er repræsenteret med et stemningsfuldt billede fra Concorde Pladsen i Paris fra 1891 (kat.nr. 37), der leder mine tanker hen på Woody Allens mesterlige film ”Midnight in Paris”, hvor man kan drømme sig til en svunden tid i selskab med tidens store personligheder. En kunstners fornemmeste opgave er jo netop at få os til at drømme! Apropos Paul Fischer er jeg blevet gjort bekendt med, at når pigernes kjoler er lange, er kvaliteten på værket høj, og er længden på kjolerne korte, går kvaliteten ned. Teorien holder i hvert tilfælde stik med kat.nr. 21 og 43! Også Asger Jorn (kat. nr. 74, 78 og 84) og Vilhelm Lundstrøm (kat. nr. 65, 70 og 73) er repræsen- teret med flere betydningsfulde værker, og blandt auktionens sjældenheder ses en Flora Danica- tallerken fra det oprindelige stel (kat.nr. 8) og ikke mindst førsteudgaven af Tycho Brahes bog om opdagelsen af den nye stjerne ”De Nova Stella” fra 1573 (kat.nr. 58). Rigtig god fornøjelse og på gensyn i Bredgade! Jesper Bruun Rasmussen 825_selected_s01-09_start.indd 8 04/11/11 18.06 Jesper Bruun Rasmussen 50 years in the service of FineArt Believe it or not, half a century has gone by since I started work in my father’s auction house at Bredgade at the age of 18. My career lay ahead of me – and art soon got into my blood! Much has happened since those days, when the auction house employed a staff of ten or so. Today, we have expanded, with two departments in Copenhagen Nordhavn and one in Aarhus, and we have 100 employees. Back then, we basically only sold fine art and antiques, whereas today’s auctions also include modern and contemporary art, jewellery, design, books, stamps, coins, wine and weapons. One of the greatest innovations in the history of the auction house is our online auctions, launched in 2004 as a supplement to the auctions at Bredgade. Today, we sell about 80,000 lots per year via our two sales channels. However, the ivory gavel is the same one we used back then! And I am still keen to see it fall on the best items. Each auction is like an open chest of new treasures making their way through our business. When the hammer falls, they change owners. Many end up in private homes or with dealers, but over the years a number of Danish and foreign museums have been able to enrich their collec- tions with purchases from Bruun Rasmussen. You could say we facilitate high-class recycling! I am now looking forward to celebrating my 50 years in the auction business with this major anniversary auction in which some 1,500 objets d’art will go under the hammer.

Unlike 1867, 1890 and 1902, in 1916, already two years into World War I, the US Navy was not looking for an added coaling station or naval base in the Caribbean. However, since 1902, it had been clear to Admiral George DEWEY that Kaiser WILHELM II coveted the Danish West Indies to be used as a naval base, through which he could exert military and political power in the Caribbean. After the improvements made to the St. Thomas Harbor facilities just prior to World War I, and Admiral von Tirpitz’ U-boat campaign to sink all commercial and naval ships aiding the Allies, it became obvious that the Hamburg-American Line facilities in St. Thomas Harbor might be used as a U-boat supply base for the control of maritime traffic in the Caribbean and the Mid-Atlantic. Aware of this serious German threat, Admiral DEWEY convinced President Woodrow WILSON and the US Congress that the acquisition of the Danish West Indies was a matter of great urgency. He should be credited for speeding the sale negotiations, which successfully ended on 4 August 1916, for persuading the US Senate to ratify the treaty only a month later, and for saving the Caribbean from the scourge of German U-boats during World War I.     Hans Christian Andersen between a culture of meaning and a culture of presence Mogens Davidsen, Associate Professor, University of Southern Denmark Abstract The article opens with questioning what kind of “community” Hans Christian Andersen as an artist can be said to have been a part of, considering that the community of Andersen’s upbringing was radically different from the one he was socialized into through his literary career. With the point of departure in Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht’s distinction between literature displaying “presence in language” and “presence achieved against language”, the article suggests that part of Andersen’s work (with Søren Kierkegaard’s critique of the novel Only a Fiddler in focus) can be seen as examples of presence achieved against language. With the two presence categories which Gumbrecht typologically distinguishes as a “presence culture” and a “meaning culture” in mind, the presence categories are ascribed to an oral culture of Andersen’s social background, and the elitist intellectual culture of the Danish Golden Age. Inspired by Kierkegaard’s characterization of Andersen’s novel in musical terms, the article further presents a possible understanding of presence, the implications of which reaches far beyond the harmonic paradigm of the Golden Age and into the musical modernism of Arnold Schönberg in the twentieth century. Introduction What kind of community can Hans Christian Andersen rightly be said to have been a part of, if such a community also has to be detectible in his work as formal or thematic aspects of his literature? This is not an altogether easy question to answer, taken into consideration that Andersen came from the very poorest part of society and was socialized into the cultural and artistic norms of the elitist circles of the Danish Golden Age of the late absolute monarchy.

Andersen and the Heibergs1 by Colin Roth t must have been exciting for the ballet historian, Knud Arne Jür­ Igensen, to discover a Bournonville manuscript in the Royal Library’s collection which opens with what is clearly a reference to Søren Kier­ ke gaard.2 Though not mentioned by name, Kierkegaard is readily identifiable because his Master’s degree dissertation on ‘The Concept of Irony’ is explicitly referred to in the first sentence. It was right that the discovery was quickly shared with researchers at the Søren Kierke­ gaard Research Centre at Copenhagen’s University. This article is a study of the document, its context and especially of the references con­ cealed within it. A complete transcription of the Danish original and a new English translation appear as appendices, one of which should, ideally, be read first.

Here we see people of all ages, nude and clothed, performing varied activities in numerous poses, all in a setting that includes different bodies of water, types of architecture, land forms, and animals. • Wealthy Roman patrons liked landscapes like this one, combining natural and human-made elements in an orderly structure. Rather than emphasizing the vast distance between foreground and horizon with a sweeping view, Domenichino placed boundaries between the foreground (the shoreline), middle ground (architecture), and distance. Viewers can then experience the scene’s depth in a more measured way. • For many years, scholars thought this was a copy of a painting by Domenichino, but recently it has been argued that it is an original. The argument is based on careful comparison of many of the picture’s stylistic characteristics, and on the presence of so many figures in complex poses.
