INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH INTO ARTISTS’ MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE

ANNUAL REPORT JANUARY – DECEMBER 2014

CATS Centre for Art Technological Studies and Conservation

The establishment of the first Danish cultural heritage research infrastructure, Centre for Art Technological Studies and Conservation (CATS), in 2011 became a reality thanks to a considerable donation from the VILLUM FOUNDATION and the VELUX FOUNDATION.

The centre is a strategic research partnership between three based research institutions  Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK)  The National Museum of (NMD)  The School of Conservation at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation (SoC)

The cornerstone of CATS is technical art history, which is an interdisciplinary field of research between conservators, natural scientists and scholars from art historical and cultural studies. Technical art history investigates the making and meaning of art works, painting techniques and artists’ materials.

A main objective of the research centre is to develop new and more exact methods to diagnose, treat and preserve our art historical heritage. The exploration of artistic practices is aimed at shedding light on the complex and fascinating cartography of ageing processes within works of art – to contribute to and advance the field of technical art history.

CATS Annual Report, January - December 2014 3

Introduction

By Director of CATS, Prof. Dr. Jørgen Wadum

The establishment of the first Danish research infrastructure with the aim to analyse artworks and related objects was a reality when the Centre for Art Technological Studies and Conservation (CATS) was realised in 2011. The current CATS Annual Report is therefore the third of its kind and covers the year 2014.

The purpose of CATS was to perform state of the art in-depth scientific research in order to explore the material nature of works of art and comparable objects in museums with which CATS collaborate. The number of activities has undergone a steep upwards curve both in respect to internal conservation- restoration related requests but also from external stakeholders.

The interdisciplinary research collaboration between SMK, NMD and SoC, the three longstanding and individual institutions with their own idiosyncratic cultures, has been ambitious but nonetheless achieved. The national and international outreach has been significant, and a potential international leadership role is being indicated by a number of factors, some accidental others orchestrated by CATS ambitions.

During a meeting with four of the CATS International Advisors in December 2014 we were pleased to learn that they all highlighted how successful CATS has been in branding itself within the international heritage sector. Wherever conservation or heritage scientist gather CATS was either present with papers, posters or just on the lips of attendees as a successful and serious conservation science infrastructure.

A significant example of the international trust in CATS was the invitation to become a full member of IPERION_CH (Integrated Platform for the European Research Infrastructure ON Culture Heritage). This Research Infrastructure (RI) has the ambition to operate as the successor of the EU-funded CHARISMA project that finished its work in spring 2014.

CATS will therefore as part of the RI of IPERION_CH (provided funding) participate in the establishment of a unique pan-European research infrastructure in Heritage Science by integrating national world-class facilities at research centres, universities and museums. This consortium includes DARIAH, the European Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities, which also aims to enhance and support digitally- enabled research and teaching across the humanities and arts.

The centre will continue advocacy in this direction and will continuously contribute to the understanding of the physical properties and behaviour of the substance of artworks as well as the materials with which they are treated. CATS in this way assists in the generation and evaluation of conservation programmes, taking a role in the development of new treatment methods and complementing the application of existing ones in order to design strategies for the long-term preservation and stability of these materially complex objects.

Results 2014

Concluded, ongoing and future activities and projects

From the outset the curiosity was arisen of what the potential of this streamlined consortium could achieve compared to the achievements of the past rather independent and scattered research labs. Numerous institutions and individuals have therefore been approaching CATS with requests for advice, analysis and collaboration. This has indeed been very diverse from private individuals to requests for the engagement in larger national or international research projects.

Analytical services to other institutions have been following mainly two directions: analysis for the purpose of assisting in answering questions relating to materials use and issues of degradation. This kind of research was carried out for Skagen Museum (defects in a limited number of Krøyer’s works), Frederiksberg Castle (the use of Prussian blue by H. Krock), and the identification of an early use (maybe the earliest in Denmark?) of silicate binders in the murals of Thorvaldsens Museum.

Questions of authenticity have also been a concern for museums and private customers. Private owners and companies have benefited from material characterisations that helped establish relevant time-frames for their employment and thus the attributions of several important artworks. Comprising conservation scientists, conservators, and curatorial personnel, the scientific staffs of CATS thus have investigated questions of authenticity and attribution of paintings ascribed to artists such as , Canaletto and Sisley.

Conferences CATS participated as advisor and with a lecture to the international conference Authentication in Art (AiA) in The Hague.

The AiA conference produced a number of guidelines intended as a guide for information purposes only and do not replace or remove personal due diligence and/or liability (http://www.authenticationinart.org/).

The CATS Scholar in Residence Dr. Aoife Daly, has successfully developed a technique to perform non- invasive dendrochronological analysis of panel paintings and altars. Her results were presented in March 2014 in Stockholm at the Konferens om arkeologiska metoder. The paper was titled ‘Non-invasive dendrochronology – success and limitations’, and the results have stunned our collaborators and her method will be of significant importance in the collaborative project After the Black Death: Painting and Polychrome in , 1350-1550 (ABD).

The third CATS international conference took place at Frederiksberg Palace, Copenhagen 2-3 June 2014, with the theme Technology & Practice: Studying 18th-Century Paintings & Art on Paper. The conference was organised by CATS in collaboration with Metropolia University of Applied Science (Helsinki), Nationalmuseum (Stockholm) and the University of Oslo, and drew over a 100 participants from the field.

The two-day Technical Art History conference, held at Frederiksberg Palace courtesy of the Palace, and was focusing on artists’ techniques and materials, source research, conservation science, the history of science and technology, history of trade, and pharmacy during the 18th century and explore tradition and changes in artistic practices seen in the light of the establishment of a series of national Art Academies in Europe throughout the century. The program comprised 18 papers delivered after an opening key-note by SMK director Mikkel Bogh and a key-note on day two by professor Andreas Burmester, director of the Doerner Institute, Munich.

The oral conference presentations will after peer review by an international team of experts in the field and under the management of Mette Kokkenborg, CATS research coordinator, be further processed by expert editorial guidance by Kimberly H. Muir, Assistant Research Conservator at The Art Institute of Chicago, and Helen Evans, Paper Conservator at Nationalmuseum, Stockholm. The CATS Proceedings II, an online publication in collaboration with Archetype Publications Ltd. and which will also be available as print on demand, will be published in mid-2015.

Two CATS researchers were invited to the prestigious Gordon Research Conference, in July 2014 in Newry (ME), United States, with the title Scientific Methods in Cultural Heritage Research - Challenges and Complexity in Characterization and Conservation, where they presented a new and promising research topic

CATS Annual Report, January - December 2014 12

T3.2/D2/D3 Technical examination of Abildgaard’s easel paintings A technical investigation of 55 easel paintings by Abildgaard and a smaller number of reference paintings by contemporary Danish and French artists was completed in 2013. The investigation was supplemented by a study of written sources including Abildgaard’s personal papers and letters. The aim was to illuminate Abildgaard’s use of materials and working methods and to identify potential patterns or evolution in his technique, seen in a contemporary European perspective. A monography ‘Between Formula and Freestyle; Nicolai Abildgaard and 18th-Century Painting Techniques’ has been published as well as a conference presentation and a related article ‘Canvas Supports in Paintings by Nicolai Abildgaard: Fabrics and Formats’ at the CATS technical art history symposium ‘Technology and Practice: Studying Paintings and Art on Paper’, 2-3 June 2014. A lecture was held at a course ‘Danish and Northern European painting in a technological historical perspective’, Nov 2014, for Master students at the School of Conservation and Students at the University of Copenhagen.

T3.3/D1/D3 Abildgaard’s graphic works The classification of Abildgaard’s works on paper is ongoing with a registration of the watermarks in the paper. Registration, primarily by photography in transmitted light, is carried out on the approximately two thirds of the collection (of 508 works) which have been found to carry partial or complete marks. In a few cases this will be complemented by recording by digital X-radiography, where reading of watermarks is obscured by the design on top of the paper and thereby difficult to interpret. The data generated by this part of the WP will have a double use, as they will also be entered into the CATS-SMK and the Bernstein database of watermarks (see WP5). Registration of a variety of media and transfer techniques in the drawings has been accomplished. Two conference presentation have been held at the CATS technical art history symposium ‘Technology and Practice: Studying Paintings and Art on Paper’, 2-3 June 2014. and the related articles accepted for the Proceedings: ‘Nicolai A. Abildgaard - an 18th-Century Danish artist and his paper’ and ‘Semi-mechanical transfer methods in Abildgaards drawings’. In addition, a presentation (Ingelise Nielsen: foredrag ved NKF symposium) has been held at (NKF symposium). Regarding the latter, see also WP5

Tasks  T5.1 Degradation of cellulosic materials, canvas, paper and wood  T5.2 X-ray imaging of paper structure & watermarks

Deliverables  D.1 Studying the degradation of celluloses and integrating theories and research from other fields than paper, e.g. textile, wood etc. – planned for 2015 and 2016  D.2 The establishment of a database built on an open-source software from ‘Memory of Paper’ – In progress

T5.1/D.1. Degradation of cellulosic materials The work on this task and deliverable will start in 2015 with a study on the effect of enzymatic treatment on paper fibres.

T5.2/D.2. The establishment of a watermark database The establishment of a CATS-SMK database of watermarks for the use in research into paper history and art history on a Danish and international level was commenced in January 2013. The database is built on the open source software from the EU-funded “Bernstein project” and will be linked to and made searchable through their “Memory of Paper” server. The collection of Nicolai Abildgaard’s works of art on paper at SMK has been chosen as a pilot project in the establishment of the watermark database. The examination of these watermarks forms also part of T3.3/D1 ‘Abildgaard’s graphic works’. The implementation of the watermark database software at the SMK server is delayed, because we are waiting for a new extended version of the open source software from ‘Memory of Paper’ which is expected to be ready in the beginning of 2015. At present (December 2014) 160 watermarks have been recorded by digital photography in transmitted light and made ready for uploading to the database following our already established procedure for the recording of watermarks. Some of them will also be recorded by digital X-radiography at a later stage to improve the visibility of the watermark image. A collection of early Danish watermarks at SoC is also ready for uploading to the database. The work was presented at the CATS symposium ‘Technology and Practice: Studying Paintings and Art on Paper’, 2-3 June 2014, and the related article has been accepted for the proceedings (Nicolai Abildgaard – an 18th Century Danish Artist and his Paper). Another presentation was held at the meeting of Nordic Paper Historians in Sønderborg, 9-11 June 2014. An enlarged version of this presentation was published in Nordisk Pappershistorisk Tidskrift 2014/3, pp. 39-41.

WP6 Establishing a CATS Reference Collection Database & digital documentation

WP leader Mag.art Kim Brasen

Work package 6 entails the design and construction of a CATS reference database and development of software that can facilitate a shared infrastructure of metadata between the partner institutions of CATS and beyond.

Tasks  T6.1 Design and Construction of the database  T6.2 Input and digitalization of technical documentation, firstly from CATS partners  T6.3 Web-based resource system built and placed in a shared infrastructure, firstly amongst CATS partners

Deliverables  D1. Design and construction of the database – in progress  D2. Development of software – planned for spring 2014  D3. Implementation of CATS Reference Collection – planned for 2015-2016

The current status is that the database in its first version has been built, and data entry has begun. The database already contains the collections of pigments and cross-sections from paintings held at Statens Museum for Kunst. We gave up the idea of using CollectionSpace as the platform for the database, since we concluded that the architecture would be overly complicated as a solution for this relatively simple database. Instead we decided to use MEAN, a free and open source solution stack for building dynamic web sites.

The components of the MEAN stack are as follows:  MongoDB – a NoSQL database  Express.js – a web applications framework  Angular.js – a JavaScript MVC framework for web applications  Node.js – a software platform for scalable server-side and network applications

This solution stack will secure us a number benefits:  As a web based application the system will be easily accessible from each of the partner institutions and future business partners  The MEAN solution stack will ease integration with other systems and the API will make a frontend with extended search possibilities to the public (professional or in general) a relatively simple task  MEAN is relatively easy to configure which will make future extensions possible without much effort

The sample types supported in the CATS DB so far are:  Non Invasive Methods  Fibres (paper)  Material Samples  Paint Cross Sections  Pigments  Stretchers/Strainers

Each sample is recorded in its own template on four fans; sample metadata; analysis (done on the sample); artwork (from which the sample was taken or a non invasive method was applied); images (of samples and

the examined work of art). For artworks we’ve created a look up funktionality which allows import of metadata along with an image (if such exists) from SMK’s collections database, Corpus. For artworks outside our collections metadata must be entered and images uploaded manually.

Our original estimate that it would take one full time developer a month to build the application was a bit optimistic. Chris Pott has spent around four months of intensive development building the database, but we believe the time was well spent securing a robust platform and a user friendly interface.

Estimated time frame in detail:  Usability testing and final adjustments – December 2014/January 2015  Commence data entry into the system – December 2014/January 2015  Implementation of CATS Reference Collections database across partner institutions and integration with CATS website – planned for 2015-2016

In terms of the described deliverables:  D1. Design and construction of the database – accomplished December 2014  D2. Development of software – first version delivered December 2014  D3. Implementation of CATS Reference Collections database – planned for 2015-2016
