Hans Christian Andersen between a culture of meaning and a culture of presence Mogens Davidsen, Associate Professor, University of Southern Denmark Abstract The article opens with questioning what kind of “community” Hans Christian Andersen as an artist can be said to have been a part of, considering that the community of Andersen’s upbringing was radically different from the one he was socialized into through his literary career. With the point of departure in Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht’s distinction between literature displaying “presence in language” and “presence achieved against language”, the article suggests that part of Andersen’s work (with Søren Kierkegaard’s critique of the novel Only a Fiddler in focus) can be seen as examples of presence achieved against language. With the two presence categories which Gumbrecht typologically distinguishes as a “presence culture” and a “meaning culture” in mind, the presence categories are ascribed to an oral culture of Andersen’s social background, and the elitist intellectual culture of the Danish Golden Age. Inspired by Kierkegaard’s characterization of Andersen’s novel in musical terms, the article further presents a possible understanding of presence, the implications of which reaches far beyond the harmonic paradigm of the Golden Age and into the musical modernism of Arnold Schönberg in the twentieth century. Introduction What kind of community can Hans Christian Andersen rightly be said to have been a part of, if such a community also has to be detectible in his work as formal or thematic aspects of his literature? This is not an altogether easy question to answer, taken into consideration that Andersen came from the very poorest part of society and was socialized into the cultural and artistic norms of the elitist circles of the Danish Golden Age of the late absolute monarchy. -

Magnetism Is ubiquitous in every-day life! • Refrigerator magnets (who could live without them?) • Coils that deflect the electron beam in a CRT television or monitor • Cassette tape storage (audio or digital) • Computer disk drive storage • Electromagnet for Magnetic Resonant Imaging (MRI) Magnetic Field Magnets contain two poles: “north” and “south”. The force between like-poles repels (north-north, south-south), while opposite poles attract (north-south). This is reminiscent of the electric force between two charged objects (which can have positive or negative charge). Recall that the electric field was invoked to explain the “action at a distance” effect of the electric force, and was defined by: F E = qel where qel is electric charge of a positive test charge and F is the force acting on it. We might be tempted to define the same for the magnetic field, and write: F B = qmag where qmag is the “magnetic charge” of a positive test charge and F is the force acting on it. However, such a single magnetic charge, a “magnetic monopole,” has never been observed experimentally! You cannot break a bar magnet in half to get just a north pole or a south pole. DIANA HIRST SHAKING THE CRACKED KALIEDOSCOPE: FUTURISM AND COLLAGE IN ELIZABETH BOWEN’S TO THE NORTH Paper given at ‘Elizabeth Bowen : A Re-Evaluation’, University of Bedfordshire, 6 May 2017 In a conversation between Elizabeth Bowen and Jocelyn Brooke, recorded for the BBC in1950, Brooke describes reservations he has about her recently published novel The Heat of the Day, and how he feels that it doesn’t really hang together.1 Bowen explains what she had been attempting: I wanted to show people in extremity, working on one another’s characters and fates all the more violently because they worked by chance. I wanted the convulsive shaking of a kaleidoscope, a kaleidoscope also in which the inside reflector was cracked.2 In this paper I will argue that Bowen is attempting something similar nearly twenty years earlier in her fourth novel To the North.3 In their conversation, Brooke and Bowen also discuss how important the quality of light is in both their work, and how Bowen had originally wanted to be a painter. Several critics, as well as Brooke, identify a visual quality in her writing, and Bowen herself affirms this several occasions. Thus I will also argue that it is possible to identify some techniques of the visual artist in her work in this 1932 novel. Building up to the Second World War, the thirties was a decade of unease, and unease pervades the novel. Perhaps unsurprisingly therefore, the visual art genres or movements that are most relevant to To the North are those that are fragmented: Cubism, particularly Futurism, and their opposite: making something from fragments (collage, a jigsaw puzzle or a mosaic). -

Andre Koch Torres Assis On the First Electromagnetic Measurement of the Velocity of Light by Wilhelm Weber and Rudolf Kohlrausch Abstract The electrostatic, electrodynamic and electromagnetic systems of units utilized during last century by Ampère, Gauss, Weber, Maxwell and all the others are analyzed. It is shown how the constant c was introduced in physics by Weber's force of 1846. It is shown that it has the unit of velocity and is the ratio of the electromagnetic and electrostatic units of charge. Weber and Kohlrausch's experiment of 1855 to determine c is quoted, emphasizing that they were the first to measure this quantity and obtained the same value as that of light velocity in vacuum. It is shown how Kirchhoff in 1857 and Weber (1857-64) independently of one another obtained the fact that an electromagnetic signal propagates at light velocity along a thin wire of negligible resistivity. They obtained the telegraphy equation utilizing Weber’s action at a distance force. This was accomplished before the development of Maxwell’s electromagnetic theory of light and before Heaviside’s work. 1. Introduction In this work the introduction of the constant c in electromagnetism by Wilhelm Weber in 1846 is analyzed. It is the ratio of electromagnetic and electrostatic units of charge, one of the most fundamental constants of nature. The meaning of this constant is discussed, the first measurement performed by Weber and Kohlrausch in 1855, and the derivation of the telegraphy equation by Kirchhoff and Weber in 1857. Initially the basic systems of units utilized during last century for describing electromagnetic quantities is presented, along with a short review of Weber’s electrodynamics. -

Andersen and the Heibergs1 by Colin Roth t must have been exciting for the ballet historian, Knud Arne Jür Igensen, to discover a Bournonville manuscript in the Royal Library’s collection which opens with what is clearly a reference to Søren Kier ke gaard.2 Though not mentioned by name, Kierkegaard is readily identifiable because his Master’s degree dissertation on ‘The Concept of Irony’ is explicitly referred to in the first sentence. It was right that the discovery was quickly shared with researchers at the Søren Kierke gaard Research Centre at Copenhagen’s University. This article is a study of the document, its context and especially of the references con cealed within it. A complete transcription of the Danish original and a new English translation appear as appendices, one of which should, ideally, be read first. -

HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN’S ROMANTIC IMAGINATION: Exploring eighteenth and nineteenth century romantic conceptualisations of the imagination in selected fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen. ANNETTE GREYVENSTEYN submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the subject English Studies at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SUPERVISOR: Dr Eileen Donaldson July 2018 Abstract There are certain influences from the eighteenth and nineteenth century English and German romantic Zeitgeist that can be discerned in Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. The role of the imagination stands out as a particularly dominant notion of the romantic period as opposed to the emphasis on reason during the Enlightenment. It is this romantic influence that Andersen’s tales especially exemplify. For him the imagination is transcendent – one can overcome the mystery and hardship of an earthly existence by recasting situations imaginatively and one can even be elevated to a higher, spiritual realm by its power. The transcendent power of the imagination is best understood by viewing it through the lens of negative capability, a concept put forward by romantic poet, John Keats. The concept implies an “imaginative openness” to what is, which allows one to tolerate life’s uncertainties and the inexplicable suffering that forms part of one’s earthly existence by using the imagination to open up new potential within trying circumstances. In selected fairy tales, Andersen’s child protagonists transcend their circumstances by the power of their imagination. In other tales, nature is instrumental in this imaginative transcendence. The natural world conveys spiritual truths and has a moralising influence on the characters, bringing them closer to the Ultimate Creator. -
