May we always keep in mind that this parish exists to give glory to God in all we do and for each one of us to be sanctified in our lives. St. , pray for us.

All the readings during this period of waiting and anticipation concentrate on making us aware that it is time for us to awaken our lives as Christians. opens our Reading from St. Mark by saying “Be watchful! Be alert!” and closes it with an intense “Watch!”

For many Advent and Christmas are times of light, whether it is the light of the candles on Advent wreaths or the lights on a tree or the festive lights which decorate many houses and businesses. Jesus brings light into our worlds, but we allow this light to permeate our own lives, to enter into the dark and sinful parts of our lives to illuminate and cleanse them.

This should be a time of renewed prayer and penance which truly prepares us to “watch” for the Lord, not just at Christmas but throughout our lives. There is a natural wonder among children at this time of year, but sometimes as we age, we lose that sense as if we are sleeping. It is time to awaken. Our minds may say “Let go” but our spirituality tells us to “Awaken.” We are filled with spiritual depths. It is time to seek them, find them, and awaken them. It is Advent, time for us to awaken and become aware of the gifts of love we have received from God and others. Or as Jesus reminds us: “Watch.”

When you are watchful, where do you find God in your everyday life?

As we begin a new liturgical year and the season of Advent, I hope you will take some time to be watchful and prepare. Our parish is offering many opportunities for your spiritual growth and enrichment. I pray that this will be a grace filled season for you.

Our Parish Elementary School is a source of pride for many, as it is an integral part of the mission of the Church to educate children. We are blessed to have a school with a long legacy that is strong and moving forward into the future. Since this is the largest ministry of our Parish, it is in everyone’s interest to know about the school, not just those who currently have children enrolled. To that extent, I want to call your attention to an important topic that is being discerned for the financial viability of our school. We are conducting focus groups with parents and parishioners to work on a long-term plan for a tuition model that will keep our school strong. You are invited to participate in sharing your feedback. Perhaps you have a historical perspective from when your children went to school here or you have ideas for the future, we want to hear from you. There are two meeting times to choose from; Tuesday, December 5th from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. or Wednesday, December 6th from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Both meetings are in the Rectory Meeting Room. Please register online if you plan to attend: https://goo.gl/9ghzDq Thank you for your continued support and prayers for our Parish School.

On December 8, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which references Mary’s conception in her mother’s womb without the stain of Original Sin:

An essential part of God’s plan for the mother of his Son was that she be conceived free from Original Sin. “Through the centuries the Church became ever more aware that Mary, “full of grace” through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception” (CCC, no. 491). In anticipation that she was to bear the Son of God, Mary was preserved from the time of her conception from Original Sin. We call this the Immaculate Conception. No sin would touch her, so that she would be a fitting and worthy vessel of the Son of God. The Immaculate Conception does not refer to the virginal conception and birth of Christ, but rather to Mary’s being conceived without inheriting Original Sin. In the course of time, the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception became more precisely enunciated, as its truth—long supported by the universal popular devotion of the faithful—was better understood by deepening theological inquiry. In 1854, Pope Pius IX proclaimed this dogma infallibly: that is, in his role as supreme teacher of the Church, he declared that this doctrine is divinely revealed and must be accepted with faith by the entire Church. (United States Catholic Catechism for Adults, 142-143)

Even before this tenet of the faith was formally declared, a long tradition of faith that held this belief that Mary was conceived without sin:

This feast was celebrated in some before the beginning of the eighth centu- ry and became widespread in the eighteenth century. In the United States, celebration of this observance predates the Declaration of Independence. The commended the nation to the patronage of Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception in 1846. It became a nationwide holy day in 1885. (Essential Guide to Seasons and Saints, 120)

At the Rite of Acceptance/Welcoming those desiring to enter the Church become officially known as candidates and catechumens. Candidates are those previously baptized who desire full communion with the Catholic Church. Catechumens are those who are not baptized who desire baptism and to enter the Church. Prior to the rite, those in class have spent time inquiring, learning, and discerning the Catholic faith. They’ve made a formal decision to change their lives and enter into a relationship with Christ. Although not full members yet, our faith community formally welcomes them into our midst and agrees to help them along as they continue their journey. Please continue to pray for each of them!

THE SCHRAUT FAMILY JOSEPH AND HIS GODPARENTS Joseph spent the first three years of his young life in and out of the hospital. He was born with Down Syndrome and had an operation to repair his heart at two months old. We finally had the opportunity to get him baptized and we chose an extra special day, his sister's birthday, to celebrate this sacrament. He is a wonderful little boy who brings us joy each and every day.— Cortney Schraut

We are so excited to start life as Mr. and Mrs. We decided to get married at St. Francis because it is where I (Emily) have been a parishioner for about 22 years and we love the church. Ben’s family became close with Monsignor Henry Breier when he was the pastor at St. Raphael, and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have such a close family friend marry us. We were so excited to use my church and his priest. We will be starting our married life in North Carolina, as that is where he is stationed. We plan to move back to St. Louis once he finishes his time in the Marine Corps. Please pray for us as we begin this journey as husband and wife.—Emily
