THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN

February 14, 2021

Notes on the

A leper approached , fell to his knees, and pleaded, "Jesus, if you want to, you can make me whole again." Jesus felt for the leper, and reached out and touched the man. "I want you to get better. Be whole again." At that moment, the leper was cured. Then, Jesus clearly warned the man. "Don't tell anyone about your cure! Go! Show your skin to the priest. Then give to the Temple, just as Moses commanded. That should show them!"

After the cure, the man left, he talked about Jesus all the time. Because of his comments, Jesus could not enter any town in the open. Instead, He stayed in places where he could be alone. But people from everywhere kept coming to see him.

In the story of the leper's cure, Mark presented three turns. First, Jesus restored an outcast's health and place in society. Second, Jesus' feelings for the man somehow changed. And, third, as the man freely spread the news of Jesus' power, the Lord's mobility was restricted.

The leper recognized Jesus had the power not only to cure him. In the eyes of the leper, Jesus could make him "kosher," ritually clean. Jesus could restore him to an honorable place in society and in Judaism. Notice the leper believed Jesus had a power greater than that of the Temple priest. On the one hand, the priest could act as an official witness that declared a leper cleansed; his role was passive. Jesus, on the other hand, had an active role as he who cured and restored. Since only God had the power to make someone truly clean, the leper recognized God's power in Jesus.

The man who Jesus cured became an evangelist. He "proclaimed and spread the word." In the context of Mark, the cured man brought others to faith. So many, in fact, Jesus could not travel in the open for fear of a mob. Yet, they came to him from every point in Galilee. Jesus continued his ministry despite restrictions placed on him. But He could not visit new territories and preach. Word of his power preceded Jesus and brought the needy to him. His power acted as a magnet. ______Fast & Abstinence

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin , the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

THE BASILICA OF SAINT MARY OF THE ASSUMPTION 506 FOURTH STREET MARIETTA, OHIO 45750 February 14, 2021

Dear Parishioners,

On Wednesday, we will enter the Holy Penitential Season of Lent. This season of Lent recalls the forty years spent by the Israelites in the desert while on their way to the Promised Land. During that time, the Israelite people experienced what it meant to live in tents without a fixed home to live in. They totally lacked security. They were often tempted to return to Egypt, where at least there was a supply of bread even though it was the food of slaves. In the wilderness of the Sinai desert, God Himself provided water and food for His people. He protected them from every danger. For the Hebrews, the experience of being totally dependent on God became their path to freedom from slavery.

The Lenten season is both an invitation for each one of us to grow and a challenge to change through prayer, fasting and good works. Lent is a time of grace; not something to dread, but rather, it is something to celebrate. It is a wonderful opportunity for each of us to do some "spiritual housekeeping and growth."

There are things about each of us that need to change; we know it deep down in our hearts and yet we resist God’s grace which quietly invites each of us to growth. Even though we know we are often in a spiritual rut, we become comfortable in our lifestyles. The Holy Season of Lent will challenge us to let go of any way of thinking or acting which keeps us from full communication with God and one another.

This Lent, additional Masses and times for confessions will be offered in each of our . Stations of the Cross will be offerd on Thursday evening at St. Henry’s and on Friday evenings at the Basilica. At the moment of death, no one regrets time spent in prayer, time spent with the Lord, time spent with the Church in prayer.

The Gospel call to be close to Christ is an invitation to each one of us to examine our own lives through a Lenten journey of faith. Christ goes before us in this journey. He invites us: “Take up your cross and follow in My footsteps”. His presence on the journey is both a source of strength and encouragement: He sets us free and makes us witnesses of Love.

Glory to Jesus Christ,

Msgr. John. M. Campbell

Wednesday, February 17, Ash Wednesday Today we begin the Holy Season of Lent. The ashes of last years’ palm are blessed and placed on our heads to remind us of the need for repentance and conversion; “Remember that you are dust, and into dust you will return.” ______REVERENTIAL QUIET IN THE BASILICA

It is an ancient tradition in the Church to have a reverential quiet tone in a Catholic Church – especially in the presence of the Blessed . More and more, this tradition is being ignored in the Basilica. Sometimes, people are trying to pray before or after Mass – we need to respect them. Please observe a quiet tone when you are present in the Basilica. ______Perpetual Help Devotions This Monday Evening

Perpetual Help Devotions will be offered this Monday evening at 6:15 pm. All parishioners are invited to participate in this beautiful devotion celebrated in our Basilica. We ask Our Lady to guide and protect our Basilica and each one of us. Jesus Christ Himself invites us to a personal visit with Him in our basilica. ______ADORATION OF THE

Pope Francis comments on the Liturgy

Pope Francis said last Wednesday that it is essential for Christians to participate in the liturgy and the to encounter the Real Presence of Jesus. “Every time we celebrate a baptism, or consecrate the bread and wine in the Eucharist, or anoint the body of a sick person with Holy Oil, Christ is here. It is He who acts and is present as when He healed the weak limbs of a sick person, or when at the Last Supper,

He delivered His testament for the salvation of the world,” Pope Francis said at his general audience on Feb. 3. “A Christianity without liturgy, I would dare say is perhaps a Christianity without Christ, without the whole of Christ,” the pope said.

Pope Francis underlined the necessity of the Sacraments in the life of a Christian. “In Christian life, the corporeal and material sphere may not be dispensed with, because in Jesus Christ it became the way of salvation … Therefore, there is no Christian spirituality that is not rooted in the celebration of the holy mysteries,” the pope said. He then quoted the Catechism, which states: “The mission of Christ and of the Holy Spirit proclaims, makes present, and communicates the mystery of salvation, which is continued in the heart that prays.”

In the history of Christianity, there has often been a temptation to emphasize one’s individual prayer over the spiritual importance of public liturgical rites, the pope explained. “Often this tendency claimed the presumed greater purity of a religiosity that did not depend on external ceremonies, considered a useless or harmful burden,” he said. However, the liturgy is the foundational act of the Christian experience, he said. “It is an event … it is presence; it is an encounter. It is an encounter with Christ. “Christ makes himself present in the Holy Spirit through the sacramental signs: hence the need for us Christians to participate in the divine mysteries,” Pope Francis said.

When the first Christians worshiped, they did so by “actualizing the gestures and words of Jesus with the light and power of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul writes in the Letter to the Romans: ‘I therefore urge you, brothers, by the mercy of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God; this is your spiritual worship.’ Life is called to become worship of God, but this cannot happen without prayer, especially liturgical prayer,” he said.

“This thought helps us all when we go to Mass: I go to pray in community, I go to pray with Christ who is present. When we go to the celebration of a Baptism, for example, it is Christ there, present, who baptizes. ‘But, Father, this is an idea, a way of speaking?’ No, it is not a way of speaking. Christ is present and in the liturgy, you pray with Christ who is next to you.”

Pope Francis noted that even during times when Christians experience imprisonment or persecution, when the liturgical rite is at its barest, “Christ makes himself truly present and gives himself to his faithful.” ______PILGRIMAGES TO THE BASILICA The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Assumption welcomes all visitors encouraging them to come, pray, and enjoy our beautiful church. If you are a member of a group who would like to tour our Basilica or make a spiritual pilgrimage, please let us know how we can be of assistance.

Pope Francis adds feast of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus to Church calendar

Last Tuesday, Pope Francis added the memorial of Sts. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus to the , giving the siblings the combined feast day of July 29.

A decree from the Congregation for Divine Worship said on Feb. 2 that Pope Francis had included the three saints in the General Roman Calendar “considering the important evangelical witness they offered in welcoming the Lord Jesus into their home, in listening to him attentively, in believing that he is the resurrection and the life.”

The General Roman Calendar is the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church, which denotes the dates of holy days and the feast days of saints commemorated annually.

Sts. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus were three siblings living in the town of Bethany outside of during the time of Christ.

Signed by Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Divine Worship congregation, the pope’s decree said that “in the household of Bethany the Lord Jesus experienced the family spirit and friendship of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, and for this reason, the Gospel of John states that he loved them. Martha generously offered him hospitality, Mary listened attentively to his words and Lazarus promptly emerged from the tomb at the command of the One who humiliated death,” the decree continued.

The July 29 feast day of Sts. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus will now appear in the Church’s calendars and liturgical texts as a memorial. Memorials rank third in the classification of feast days on the Catholic Church’s liturgical calendar. The memorial of Sts. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus will be an obligatory memorial, which means it must be observed. ______Pope Francis proclaims World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly

Pope Francis announced Sunday the establishment of an international day to honor grandparents and the elderly to take place each year in July.

“The Holy Spirit … arouses thoughts and words of wisdom in the elderly today: their voice is precious because it sings the praises of God and guards the roots of peoples. They remind us that old age is a gift and that grandparents are the link between generations, to transmit to young people an experience of life and faith,” Pope Francis said. “Grandparents are often forgotten and we forget this wealth of preserving and passing on the roots. For this reason, I have decided to establish the World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly,” the pope said. The World Day for the Grandparents and the Elderly will take place annually on the fourth Sunday of July, close to the feast of the grandparents of Jesus, Saints Joachim and Anne. ______

North Dakota lawmaker withdraws bill requiring violation of seal of confession

A North Dakota bill that would have required priests to violate the seal of confession has been withdrawn by its co-sponsor. The bill, SB 2180, required priests or other religious figures to report cases of child abuse or neglect to the authorities if they learned about the abuse in a confession or private conversation.

State Sen. Judy Lee (R-West Fargo), who co-sponsored the bill, requested on Jan. 29 that it be withdrawn from consideration. Lee said the controversial bill had become “a distraction” and cited a “lack of understanding about the goal and the circumstances.”

Current state law provides a religious exception for mandatory reporting of confirmed or suspected child abuse. Cases when “the knowledge or suspicion [of abuse] is derived from information received in the capacity of spiritual adviser,” such as in the confessional, do not require reporting the abuse to authorities. The bill sponsored by Lee and other senators would have revoked that exception.

The North Dakota Catholic Conference published a statement agreeing with Lee’s goals of fighting child abuse, but disagreeing over her legislation. “We share in Senator's Lee call to do more to prevent child abuse. We simply disagreed about the bill,” said a statement from the North Dakota Catholic Conference on its Facebook page on Friday.

“The North Dakota Catholic Conference looks forward to working with her and all legislators for the protection of the weakest among us and the common good,” the conference said, thanking all who contacted their state senators in opposition to the legislation.

According to the Code of Canon Law, the seal of confession is “inviolable.” A priest cannot reveal the contents of a confession, nor can he say if the confession took place; for violating the seal, a priest can incur excommunication.

“The Church condemns the abuse of minors by any person. Priests and deacons are already mandated reporters of any suspected abuse of a minor,” Bishop John Folda of Fargo stated on Jan. 22. “Up until now, spiritual advising has been exempted from this mandate, but SB 2180 would end this exemption.”

Folda stated that the bill, if it became law, would “violate the rights of all people of faith to practice their religion without government interference.” Furthermore, he warned that “for centuries, tyrants have attempted to infiltrate the sanctity of the confessional for their own ends, and this is yet another attempt to violate the sacred confidentiality of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.” ______“All human suffering is transformed if it can be associated for some good human purpose with Jesus’ redemptive activity.” — Cardinal George Pell

‘Devil is running loose’in El Salvador: Cardinal Proclaims

Cardinal Gregorio Rosa Chávez asked the people of El Salvador to pray “for liberation from Satan” after violence erupted following a political rally on Sunday in the capital, San Salvador. At least two people died and several were injured; some called the incident the “most serious act of political violence” in almost three decades since peace accords ended the country’s civil war.

“The devil is running loose in El Salvador, there are many demons on the loose,” Cardinal Rosa Chavez said at the end of his at St Francis Church in San Salvador on Monday. He compared the Gospel of the day, about a man possessed by demons, to the deadly incident that took place the previous night. Though accounts differ, reports by El Salvador’s newspapers say members of the left-wing Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front were being transported in a truck displaying the party’s colors and other insignia. They were heading back to the party’s headquarters after a rally. Victims said a vehicle nearby began harassing the truck and followed it through traffic. At some point, the vehicle is said to have blocked the truck’s path; a man got out of the car and began shooting at the people in the truck, which also was transporting children.

El Salvador is set to vote February 28 for municipal and general assembly elections amid one of the most contentious campaign seasons in recent history. “Let’s entrust to the Lord, this morning, this country that is, that has so many demons,” Cardinal Rosa Chavez said. ______Stray Bullet Falls at Feet of Priest Celebrating Mass in Brazil

A stray bullet pierced the roof of a church in Brazil last weekend as a Catholic priest was celebrating Mass. The local diocese pointed to the incident as a sign of worrying violence in the region.

Fr. Robinson de Castro Cunha was celebrating Sunday Mass at San José parish in the state of Vitória. He was about to conclude his homily when the bullet hit the building. The bullet pierced the tin roof at around 7:37 p.m., and “fell at the feet of the priest, who picked it up and continued with the celebration of Mass as normal.”

The Archdiocese of Vitória issued a statement lamenting the lack of security in the region. “Even those who do not live in a particularly violent area feel threatened and affected by the relentless violence,” the statement said. The pastor will continue with Masses as usual. ______
