May our adoration never cease.” – Pope John Paul II Why First Friday? In the seventeenth century, Jesus frequently appeared to St. Margaret Mary in France. One of the promises He revealed spoke of first Fridays: “In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.” Today, Holy Mass on First Friday is devoted to the Sacred Heart and to the Precious Blood of Jesus. After morning mass, the Eucharist is displayed on the altar in the monstrance. This Presence is honored by having at least one person remain in vigil while it is displayed. Historical Background The practice of reserving the Eucharist is an ancient observance which has its origins in the earliest centuries of the Church's history. The first extant description of reserving the Eucharist in order to bring Holy Communion to the sick is recorded in Saint Justin Martyr's First Apology (c. 155-157). In the following century, Cyprian of Carthage described how Christians would bring the Eucharist to their homes to receive it during the week, since the celebration of the Eucharist took place only on Sundays at this point in Christian history.1 In a tradition beginning in the city of Rome, the Eucharist was sometimes reserved and then added to the Precious Blood during a later Mass celebrated in another location as a way of symbolically expressing the communion between parishes and their bishop or between various bishops.

Nocturnal Adoration societies, Perpetual Adoration groups, national associations of the faithful promoting organized visits to the Blessed Sacrament, Holy Hours before the tabernacle, monthly, weekly and even daily exposition of the Eucharist in churches and chapels, in one country after another, have become commonplace. What to make of all of this? Is this another form of pious eccentricity, or is it founded on authentic Catholic doctrine and grounded on the solid rock of Christian revelation? It is authentic Catholic doctrine and it rests on the unchangeable truth of our revealed faith. But it needs to be explained, and the explanation is a classic example of what we call development of doctrine.
