FEAST OF FAITH Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus: Song of Heaven The words of the Sanctus are rooted in the scriptures. They recall the song of the seraphim in the prophet Isaiah’s vision of God in majesty: “Seraphim were stationed above; each of them had six wings: with two they veiled their faces, with two they veiled their feet, and with two they hovered aloft. ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!’ they cried one to the other. ‘All the earth is filled with his glory!’ ” (Isaiah 6:2-3). They recall the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ entry into Jerusa- lem: “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest” (Matthew 21:9). Yet the liturgy adds something new to these ancient texts. The seraphim sang, “the earth is filled with his glory.” But the liturgy proclaims, “heaven and earth are full of your glory.” In the Eucharist, earth and heaven meet. Today’s passage from the First Book of Kings has God empowering His prophet. The Psalm is an expression of thanksgiving for God’s deliverance. In the second reading, Paul calls for denunciation to be replaced with compassion. In the Gospel, Jesus responds to the crowd’s doubts following His statements concerning His connection to the Father and the promise of eternal life.
Elijah has through God’s grace worked a great miracle. His next action was to vanquish a large portion of his religious opposition. In the passage from the First Book of Kings, we find Elijah fleeing for his life from the wife of the Hebrew king.
Jesus has through the Father’s grace worked a great miracle. His next action was to make some bold statements. In the passage from the Gospel of John, we find Jesus facing skepticism and criticism from the Hebrew leaders.
Both Elijah and Jesus are at transformative moments. Elijah is depressed and afraid for his life until a messenger from God reorients him onto a pilgrimage to the holy mountain. Jesus draws strength from the Father and reenforces His message.
Dear Lord, Guide me in a spirit of gratitude for the fulfillment that the Spirit brings. Help me not to fall victim to shortcomings and frustrations. Keep me from the temptation of engaging in “armchair” criticism. Strengthen my awe of God’s transformative power as I look forward.
El pasaje de hoy del Primer Libro de los Reyes tiene a Dios dando poder a Su profeta. El Salmo es una expresión de acción de gracias por la liberación de Dios. En la segunda lectura, Pablo pide que la denuncia sea reemplazada por compasión. En el Evangelio, Jesús responde a las dudas de la multitud después de Sus declaraciones sobre Su conexión con el Padre y la promesa de la vida eterna.
Elías, por medio de la gracia de Dios, obró un gran milagro. Su siguiente acción fue vencer a una gran parte de su oposición religiosa. En el pasaje del Primer Libro de los Reyes, nosotros encontramos a Elías huyendo para salvar su vida de la esposa del rey Hebreo.
Jesús ha realizado un gran milagro mediante la gracia del Padre. Su siguiente acción fue hacer algunas declaraciones audaces. En el pasaje del Evangelio de Juan, nosotros encontramos a Jesús enfrentándose al escepticismo y las críticas de los líderes Hebreos.
Tanto Elías como Jesús se encuentran en momentos de transformación. Elías está deprimido y teme por su vida hasta que un mensajero de Dios lo reorienta en una peregrinación al monte santo. Jesús atrae fuerza del Padre y refuerza Su mensaje.
Querido Señor, Guíame con un espíritu de gratitud por la plenitud que trae el Espíritu. Ayúdame a no ser víctima de las deficiencias y frustraciones. Cuídame de la tentación de participar en la crítica sin "conocimiento suficiente". Fortalece mi asombro por el poder transformador de Dios mientras espero con ansias.
