Ecclesial Authorship, the Council, and the Liturgy: Reflections on a Debate between Ratzinger and Lefebvre INNOCENT SMITH, O.P. PRIORY OF ST. VINCENT FERRER, 869 Lexington Ave. New York, NY 10065 USA Abstract In the early 1980s, Cardinal Ratzinger and Archbishop Lefebvre undertook a corre spondence concerning the reception of the texts of the Second Vatican Council and the liturgical rites promulgated by Pope Paul VI. In contrast to Lefebvre 's hermeneutical emphasis on the individual drafters of the documents, Ratzinger proposed that these texts and rites should be understood not as the productions of individuals but as documents of the Magisterium and liturgical rites of the Church. In this essay, Ratzinger 's distinction is explored further by appeal to the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, who offers helpful in dications/or understanding the respective roles of individuals and the Church as a whole in the development of liturgical and doctrinal expressions of the faith of the Church. The essay concludes by proposing a language of "ecclesial authorship" of magisterial and liturgical texts that emphasizes the continuity that abides in the reform and development of the Church 's liturgy and doctrine. The pope’s latest encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistia (On the Eucharist in its Relationship to the Church) – the fourteenth in his 25-year pontificate - was released in Rome on Maundy or Holy Thursday, April 17, 2003.1 Flanked by an introduction (1-10) and conclusion (59-62), the papal letter comprises six critical sections in which the Eucharist is discussed: The Mystery of Faith (11-20); The Eucharist Builds the Church (21-25); The Apostolicity of the Eucharist and of the Church (26-33); The Eucharist and Ecclesial Communion (34-46); The Dignity of the Eucharistic Celebration (47-52); and At the School of Mary, “Woman of the Eucharist” (53-58). Published in English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Latin, it is a personal, warm, and passionate letter by the current pope on a longstanding theological treasure and dilemma (cf. 8). Like all papal encyclicals it is an internal theological document, bearing the full authority of the Vatican and addressing a matter of grave importance and concern for Roman Catholic faith, life and ministry. But papal texts are no longer merely Roman Catholic in orientation and scope. -

The Holy See APOSTOLIC LETTER MANE NOBISCUM DOMINE OF THE HOLY FATHER JOHN PAUL II TO THE BISHOPS, CLERGY AND FAITHFUL FOR THE YEAR OF THE EUCHARIST OCTOBER 2004–OCTOBER 2005 INTRODUCTION 1. “Stay with us, Lord, for it is almost evening” (cf. Lk 24:29). This was the insistent invitation that the two disciples journeying to Emmaus on the evening of the day of the resurrection addressed to the Wayfarer who had accompanied them on their journey. Weighed down with sadness, they never imagined that this stranger was none other than their Master, risen from the dead. Yet they felt their hearts burning within them (cf. v. 32) as he spoke to them and “explained” the Scriptures. The light of the Word unlocked the hardness of their hearts and “opened their eyes” (cf. v. 31). Amid the shadows of the passing day and the darkness that clouded their spirit, the Wayfarer brought a ray of light which rekindled their hope and led their hearts to yearn for the fullness of light. “Stay with us”, they pleaded. And he agreed. Soon afterwards, Jesus' face would disappear, yet the Master would “stay” with them, hidden in the “breaking of the bread” which had opened their eyes to recognize him. 2. The image of the disciples on the way to Emmaus can serve as a fitting guide for a Year when the Church will be particularly engaged in living out the mystery of the Holy Eucharist. Amid our questions and difficulties, and even our bitter disappointments, the divine Wayfarer continues to walk at our side, opening to us the Scriptures and leading us to a deeper understanding of the 2 mysteries of God. -

As this series of Ad Limina visits of the Latin Rite Bishops of India begins, I warmly welcome you, the Pastors of the Ecclesiastical Provinces of Calcutta, Guwahati, Imphal and Shillong. Together we give thanks to God for the graces bestowed on the Church in your country, and recall the words of our Lord to his disciples as he ascended into heaven: "Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age" (Mt 28:20). During this Easter Season, you are here at the tombs of Saints Peter and Paul to express again your particular relationship with the universal Church and with the Vicar of Christ. I thank Archbishop Sirkar for the warm sentiments and good wishes he has conveyed on behalf of the Episcopate, clergy, Religious and faithful of the Ecclesiastical Provinces here represented. By God’s grace I have been able to visit your homeland on two occasions and have had first-hand experience of warm Indian hospitality, so much a part of the rich cultural heritage which marks your nation. Since the earliest days of Christianity, India has celebrated the mystery of salvation contained in the Eucharist which mystically joins you with other faith communities in the "oneness of time" of the Paschal Sacrifice (Ecclesia de Eucharistia, 5). I pray that the faithful of India will continue to grow in unity as their participation in the celebration of the Mass confirms them in strength and purpose. -

THE MEDIATION OF THE CHURCH IN SOME PONTIFICAL DOCUMENTS FRANCIS X. LAWLOR, SJ. Weston College N His recent encyclical letter, Hurnani generis, of Aug. 12, 1950, the I Holy Father reproves those who "reduce to a meaningless formula the necessity of belonging to the true Church in order to achieve eternal salvation."1 In the light of the Pope's insistence in the same encyclical letter on the ordinary, day-by-day teaching office of the Roman Pontiffs, it will be useful to select from the infra-infallible but authentic teaching of the Popes some of the abundant material touching the question of the mediatorial function of the Church in the order of salvation. The Popes, to be sure, do not speak and write after the manner of theo logians but as pastors of souls, and it is doubtless not always easy to transpose to a theological level what is contained in a pastoral docu ment and expressed in a pastoral method of approach. Yet the authentic teaching of the Popes is both a guide to, and a source of, theological thinking. The documents cited are of varying solemnity and doctrinal importance; an encyclical letter is clearly of greater magisterial value than, let us say, an occasional epistle to some prelate. It is not possible here to situate each citation in its documentary context; but the force and point of a quotation, removed from its documentary perspective, is perhaps as often lessened as augmented. Those who wish may read them in their context, if they desire a more careful appraisal of evidence. -

First Fridays and Eucharistic Adoration Let us be generous with our time in going to meet him in adoration and in contemplation that is full of faith and ready to make reparation for the great faults and crimes of the world. May our adoration never cease.” – Pope John Paul II Why First Friday? In the seventeenth century, Jesus frequently appeared to St. Margaret Mary in France. One of the promises He revealed spoke of first Fridays: “In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.” Today, Holy Mass on First Friday is devoted to the Sacred Heart and to the Precious Blood of Jesus. After morning mass, the Eucharist is displayed on the altar in the monstrance. This Presence is honored by having at least one person remain in vigil while it is displayed. While adoration can occur with the Eucharist in the tabernacle, being able to see the Eucharist adds to the intimacy of this time. As the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops notes, “Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament flows from the sacrifice of the Mass and serves to deepen our hunger for Communion with Christ and the rest of the Church.” The Saint John Paul II Eucharistic Adoration Association points out that this practice was expected to continue after Vatican II: “(In) Mysterium Fidei.. -

Official Communique 13 Presentation of the decree of the CCCB on the application of the norms of Misericordia Dei My dear fellow priests, It is five years now since I presented to you the letter Misericordia Dei of Pope John Paul II, and provided you with some guidelines for the practice of the ministry of reconciliation while reserving the right to return to the subject once the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments had confirmed the decree that the CCCB intended to put before it. Some revisions and several meetings between the representatives of the CCCB and the Holy See were necessary before the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops received from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments the recognitio requested following a vote by more than a two- thirds majority of the members of the Conference. It was actually on January 18th last that the Conference received the confirmation of its decree. You will find as an appendix the text of the decree in French and English. This decree of the Conference confirms the exceptional character of general absolution and specifies the conditions for it even more precisely. You will realize that the necessary conditions do not obtain in our diocese to enable me to authorize recourse to this third form of the sacrament of penance. In this respect, nothing has changed in what I said to you in my letter of February 9th, 2005 in which I informed you of my decision to give no further approval to the adoption of general absolution. -

[Translated from Original Spanish] Thy Kingdom Come! PRESENTATION OF THE COMMUNIQUÉS OF THE GENERAL CHAPTER 1. From January 8th through February 25th, 2014, the Extraordinary General Chapter of the Legion of Christ took place in Rome. His Eminence, Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, CS, and his two counselors, Fr. Gianfranco Ghirlanda, SJ, and Fr. Agostino Montan, CSI, presided. Sixty- one chapter fathers participated, 19 ex officio and 42 elected by the nine territories of the congregation and the centers of Rome. 2. This Extraordinary General Chapter marks the end of the journey of in-depth revision that the congregation has travelled since the apostolic visitation, which took place during 2009- 2010, and the naming of a Pontifical Delegate in the summer of 2010. Our principal tasks in the Chapter, as Pope Benedict XVI1 indicated and as Pope Francis confirmed2, were to revise the Constitutions and to elect a new central government for the congregation. 3. In the first days, in light of the reports that the Pontifical Delegate and the pro-General Director submitted, we focused on analyzing the life of the Congregation since the ordinary General Chapter that took place in 2005. One of the outcomes of the intense exchange of ideas that took place in those days was the communiqué that the Chapter approved on January 20th, 2014, about the journey of renewal of the Congregation. This same day, the elections of the new central government took place. Address on Conscience and the Catholic Layman Boston Catholic Men’s Conference Boston, MA March 17, 2007 Carl A. Anderson Gentlemen, it is an honor for me to join you this afternoon, as you ponder the question of how we, as Catholic men, are called to live our lives as “Workers in Christ’s Vineyard.” Inasmuch as I have the privilege of serving as head of the world’s largest organization of Catholic laymen, I’ve had occasion to think about this subject quite a lot. Some of you are undoubtedly brother Knights, and so you know that we’re celebrating our 125th anniversary this year. Since our founding down in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882, we’ve provided an opportunity for millions of Catholic men to live out their faith together, bound by devotion to the principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. We’ve faced many difficult challenges over the years, and have met them together, as Catholic gentlemen who strive to be loving husbands and fathers, and as men whose Catholic faith is much more than a perfunctory visit at Mass on Sunday. It has never been an easy thing to live one’s life as a faithful Catholic. We all know that in the earliest days of the Church, Christians frequently paid with their lives for simply worshiping the one true God. Martyrdom was the price of faith, and many willingly paid the price. We tend not to think too much these days about martyrdom. The days of Nero and spectacles in the Roman Coliseum are long gone, but martyrdom is not.
