UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE EMBASSY OF THE REPUBLIC OF SERBIA IN PRETORIA SERBIAN ARTS AND CULTURE SOCIETY AFRICA SERBIAN FILM FESTIVAL 22nd - 29th November 2012 NU METRO, MONTECASINO An author’s perspective of the world Film, as a sublimation of all arts, is a true medium, a universal vehicle with which the broader public is presented with a world view, as seen by the eye of the fi lmmaker. Nowadays, due to the global economic crisis, which is ironically producing technological and all sorts of other develop- ments, an increasing number of people are pushed to the margins of average standards of living, and fi lmmakers are given the chance to bring under their ‘protection’ millions of disillusioned people with their fi lmmaking capabilities. Art, throughout its history, has always praised but has also been heavily critical of its subject. Film is not just that. Film is that and so much more. Film is life itself and beyond life. Film is everything many of us dream about but never dare to say out loud. That is why people love fi lms. That is why it is eternal. It tears down boundaries and brings together cul- tures. It awakens curiosity and builds bridges from one far away coast to another. Film is a ‘great lie’ but an even greater truth. Yugoslavian, and today the Serbian fi lm industry has always been ‘in trend’. It might sound harsh but, unfortunately, this region has always provided ample ‘material’ for fi lms. Under our Balkan clouds there has been an ongoing battle about which people are older, which came and settled fi rst, who started it and who will be fi rst to leave and such battles have been and continue to be an inspiration to fi lm producers.

Its world premiere in the O cial Selection – Special Screenings programme will also mark the first time after 28 years that a Serbian debut feature film is included in the o cial selection of the most influential global film festival. Panama is a film authored by young people and for most of them this has been their first feature film making experience: screenwriter and co-producer Pavle Vučković, screenplay co-writer Jelena Vuksanović, producer Tatjana Žeželj-Gojković, director of photography Đorđe Arambašić, set designers Bojana Nikolić and Livija Mikić, costume designer Magdalena Klašnji, editor Bojan Kosović and young actors for which Panama was their film debut, Slaven Došo and Jovana Stojiljkovič. Others who have contributed towards the making of this film include Miloš Pjevač, Tamara Dragičević, Jelisaveta Orašanin, Nebojša Milovanović, Aleksandar Đurica, Branka Pujić, Andrija Daničić... The exhibition Goran Paskaljevic comprises new 35mm English-subtitled prints of 13 features and two shorts by the director, presented January 9–31, 2008, in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters. The director will be in attendance on January 9 at 7:00 p.m. to introduce his debut feature Cuvar Plaze U Zimskom Peridou (Beach Guard in Winter, 1976). The exhibition is organized by Laurence Kardish, Senior Curator, Department of Film. At the age of 20 he studied cinema at FAMU (Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts), the celebrated film academy in Prague, during the brief, heady period of liberalization in Czechoslovakia, but in 1973, during the early years of the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, Paskaljevic returned to Yugoslavia, where he commenced making short films and documentaries for television. His first feature, Beach Guard in Winter, garnered international critical acclaim, and by the time he had completed The Powder Keg (a.k.a. Cabaret Balkan) 22 years and nine feature films later, he was one of Eastern Europe’s leading filmmakers.

Its appearance at Sundance – a hard to reach fulfillment of a dream shared by so many independent directors – in this case could be called an aberration, but only in the sense of deviating from the definition of success given by Gertrude Stein – “A nobody becomes somebody”, because Mirjana Karanović was definitely a somebody before she became a director, and not only in the rocky Balkans. Not many national film industries can boast three films at the ofcial competition at Sundance in only five years – beginning with Circles by Srdan Golubović, continuing with The Disobedient by Mina Djukić, up to Karanović’s film. A Good Wife will, after America and Europe, soon have its Australian premiere, as a part of a project which promotes European female directors, coproduced by European Film Promotion and Sydney Film Festival, with Variety acting as the media partner.
